Correlations between Diabetes Mellitus Self-Care Activities and Glycaemic Control in the Adult Population: A Cross-Sectional Study

2022

Although it is well known that lifestyle changes can affect plasma glucose levels, there is little formal evidence for the sustained effectiveness of exercise and diet in diabetes mellitus (DM) management. Self-care in DM refers to the real-life application of the knowledge that the patient gained during the education programmes. The goals are to bring about changes in the patient’s behaviour, thus improving glycaemic control. We evaluated the influence of DM self-care activities (SCA) on glycaemic control in a total of 159 patients with DM. Plasma glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels were used to monitor glycaemic control, while SCA were assessed using the standardised Diabetes Self-M…

El rol del modelo de las competencias en la reconfiguración meritocrática de las pautas de negociación salarial en empresas argentinas: continuidades…

2020

The development of new models of work organization and the complementary advance of flexible guidelines for the use of the labor force had as a correlate a profound change in techniques for the evaluation of workers. Thus, the typical model of Fordism, based on qualifications, was replaced by a different one based on competencies, whereby the strong relationship of the former was abandoned with the determination of the technical knowledge required for each job to move to a system which the priority is placed in the individual attitude. The consequent individualization of performance evaluations can lead to a possible loss of objectivity. In this article we develop a theoretical comparison b…

Small-x, Diffraction and Vector Mesons

2015

This talk discusses recent progress in some topics relevant for deep inelastic scattering at small x. We discuss first differences and similarities between conventional collinear factorization and the dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering. Many of the recent theoretical advances at small x are related to taking calculations in the nonlinear saturation regime to next-to-leading order accuracy in the QCD coupling. On the experimental side significant recent progress has been made in exclusive and diffractive processes, in particular in ultraperipheral nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Artificial increase of uracilemia during fluoropyrimidine treatment can lead to DPD deficiency misinterpretation

2021

Each year in France, >75 000 patients receive fluoropyrimidines, including 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and its oral prodrug capecitabine (Xeloda), to treat digestive, breast and head and neck cancers.1 Among them, ∼20% will experience severe hematological and digestive toxicities and <2% will have a fatal outcome in the first two cycles. A part of these toxicities may result from a deficiency in dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) which catabolizes the endogenous uracil (U) into dihydrouracil (UH2) as well as 5-FU. In 2018, French Health Authorities [Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) and Institut National du Cancer, (INCa)] recommended the evaluation of the enzymatic activity of DPD by measuring th…

Long-lived dynamic heterogeneity in a relaxor ferroelectric

1998

The polydispersive dielectric response of the relaxor ferroelectric lead magnesium niobate was investigated using nonresonant spectral hole-burning experiments. Using large alternating electric fields, specific parts of the relaxation-time distribution could be addressed selectively. This provides evidence for the dynamic heterogeneity of the dipolar reorientation process. The refilling of single as well as of double holes was much slower than the time scale set by the pump frequencies. Upon refilling, the holes exhibited no signs of spectral broadening. The present findings suggest a speedup of polarization response associated with a domain-wall depinning that is induced by the hole-burnin…

Distributed Leadership for Interconnected Worlds

2011

The technological advancements in the second half of the previous century generated the potential for participatory decision making in organizational and governmental institutions. Moreover, the digital networking environments on the Internet that enabled this type of decision making were accompanied by the emergence and establishment of on-line communities. Under this perspective, the range of communication mediated by ubiquitous computing allows problems, ideas, and suggestions of a spec ific nature to be considered when gathered into organizational and institutional virtual spaces. Within these spaces, the voices of individual customers, workers, organizational stakeholders, and/or citiz…

The EPPS16 nuclear PDFs

2017

We report on EPPS16 - the first analysis of NLO nuclear PDFs where LHC p-Pb data (Z, W, dijets) have been directly used as a constraint. In comparison to our previous fit EPS09, also data from neutrino-nucleus deeply-inelastic scattering and pion-nucleus Drell-Yan process are now included. Much of the theory framework has also been updated from EPS09, including a consistent treatment of heavy quarks in deeply-inelastic scattering. However, the most notable change is that we no longer assume flavour-blind nuclear modifications for valence and sea quarks. This significantly reduces the theoretical bias. All the analysed data are well reproduced and the analysis thereby supports the validity o…

Novel yeast extract is superior to colloidal oatmeal in providing rapid itch relief

2020

Background Approximately, 13.5% of the population suffers from chronic itch. Many cosmetic and pharmaceutical treatments for itch are available; however, cosmetic treatments are not reliably effective and most pharmaceutical formulations carry the risk of adverse events with chronic use. Aims Previously, we have reported a novel extraction process of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, that is, Baker's yeast. The extract obtained from the novel process demonstrates superior anti-itch properties compared to other yeast extracts. In our previous study, we demonstrated that, after 30 minutes, the extract significantly reduced itch when compared to a placebo lotion (P = .002). Methods In the present stud…

The In Silico Fischer Lock-and-Key Model: The Combined Use of Molecular Descriptors and Docking Poses for the Repurposing of Old Drugs

2019

Not always lead compound and/or derivatives are suitable for the specific biological target for which they are designed but, in some cases, discarded compounds proved to be good binders for other biological targets; therefore, drug repurposing constitute a valid alternative to avoid waste of human and financial resources. Our virtual lock-and-key methods, VLKA and Conf-VLKA, furnish a strong support to predict the efficacy of a designed drug a priori its biological evaluation, or the correct biological target for a set of the selected compounds, allowing thus the repurposing of known and unknown, active and inactive compounds.
