Estimation of lead-time bias and its impact on the outcome of surveillance for the early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma.
2014
Lead-time is the time by which diagnosis is anticipated by screening/surveillance with respect to the symptomatic detection of a disease. Any screening program, including surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is subject to lead-time bias. Data regarding lead-time for HCC are lacking. Aims of the present study were to calculate lead-time and to assess its impact on the benefit obtainable from the surveillance of cirrhotic patients. Background & Aims: Lead-time is the time by which diagnosis is anticipated by screening/surveillance with respect to the symptomatic detection of a disease. Any screening program, including surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is subject to …
Do Reduced Hospital Mortality Rates Lead to Increased Utilization of Inpatient Emergency Care?:A Population-Based Cohort Study
2018
OBJECTIVES: To measure the impact of the improvement in hospital survival rates on patients' subsequent utilization of unplanned (emergency) admissions.DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING: Unplanned admissions occurring in all acute hospitals of the National Health Service in England between 2000 and 2009, including 286,027 hip fractures, 375,880 AMI, 387,761 strokes, and 9,966,246 any cause admissions.STUDY DESIGN: Population-based retrospective cohort study. Unplanned admissions experienced by patients within 28 days, 1 year, and 2 years of discharge from the index admission are modeled as a function of hospital risk-adjusted survival rates using patient-level probit and negative binomial models. …
Renal and neurologic effects of cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic in children: evidence of early effects and multiple interactions at environmental…
2006
We read with great interest the article by de Burbure et al. (2006) on health effects in children who live near nonferrous smelters in France, the Czech Republic, and Poland. We were especially interested in the inverse relationship found between levels of urinary mercury and serum prolactin. We found a similar result in an Italian multicenter crosssectional survey with adult subjects (Alessio et al. 2002) using a different statistical approach based on regression analysis with mixed linear models. We found that serum prolactin decreased as a function of both urinary mercury and occupational exposure to inorganic mercury (Lucchini et al. 2003). In another study (Carta et al. 2003), our grou…
The role of heparin lead-in in the real-world management of acute venous thromboembolism: The PREFER in VTE registry
2017
Abstract Introduction The appropriate strategy for initiating oral anticoagulant (OAC) therapy after an acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) depends on the intermediate-term anticoagulant to be used. While heparin bridging to vitamin K antagonists (VKA) is required, the direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) rivaroxaban (30 mg/day) and apixaban (10 mg/day) can be initiated directly without parenteral anticoagulation. The objective was to evaluate OAC initiation patterns in clinical practice. Materials and methods PREFER in VTE was an international, non-interventional registry conducted between January 2013 and August 2015. Consecutive acute VTE patients were grouped based on their OAC treatment at…
Transformational capabilities of ICT: A technology management perspective in construction
2008
(1) The construction industry typically lags behind in adopting technology. (2) Given the fact that the process of construction is critically dependent on relevant, accurate and timely information, ICT can play a very important role in the industry. (3) The industry is actually missing out on the crucial advantages offered by ICT. ICT is used by and large as mere enhancement tools, not as agents that can transform and thus revolutionize the process of construction. (4) A new approach based on the technology management principles will enable researchers to formulate new strategic directions. (5) This paper will explore successful technology management strategies in the context of ICT impleme…
Les followers ont-ils vraiment de l'importance dans le modèle de Stackelberg?
2011
In this paper, we consider a T-stage linear model of Stackelberg oligopoly. First, we show geometrically and analytically that under the two conditions of linear market demand and identical constant marginal costs, the T-stage Stackelberg model reduces to a model where T oligopolies exploit residual demand sequentially. At any stage, leaders behave as if followers did not matter. Second, we study social welfare and convergence toward competitive equilibrium. Especially, we consider the velocity of convergence as the number of firms increases. The convergence is faster when reallocating firms from the most to the less populated cohort until equalizing the size of all cohorts.
Screening of fractions from marine sponges and other invertebrates to identify new lead compounds with anti-tumor activity in lymphoma models
2020
Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the commonest type of lymphomas, accounting for 30%-40% of new cases each year. Despite the big improvements achieved in the treatment, still 25–40% of patients still succumb due to refractory or relapsed disease. This highlights the need of new drugs for this cancer. The marine environment has recently been recognized as a source of anti-cancer compounds, as demonstrated by different marine drugs approved by different regulatory agencies (trabectedin, cytarabine, eribulin, plitidepsin) or as components of antibody drug conjugates for lymphoma patients (monomethyl auristatin E in polatuzumab vedotin and brentuximab vedotin). Here, we present a large …
Application of geomarketing to coastal tourism areas
2019
Geomarketing allows geographic units to be defined with a certain degree of homogeneity in terms of tourist preferences, behaviours, needs, expectations, buying and consumption patterns, and analogous attitudes. The result is a “territorial segmentation” of the demand in accordance with the geographic characteristics of tourism areas. The objective of this work is to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of applying geomarketing to the territorial segmentation of demand in coastal tourism areas. An empirical analysis of hotels specialising in family tourism in tourist accommodation establishments in Costa Adeje (Spain) is presented. The main conclusion is that the tourist accommodation varia…
Identification and study of research groups in Learning, Teaching and Education Leadership
2016
The bibliometrical indicators, based on the statistical analysis of quantitative data from scientific literature, are currently an essential tool to the study researchers’ activity. In these lasts years, the use of bibliometrical indicators as a complement to other scientific indicators to analyse the research situation of a country, its evolution in time and its position in the international context has been extended. The objective of this study is to analyse the scientific productivity in Learning, Teaching and Education Leadership throughout the communications presented in all of the World Conference on Learning, Teaching and Education Leadership (WCLTA) included in the database Web …
The human side of leadership: Inspirational leadership effects on follower characteristics and happiness at work (HAW)
2020
Abstract Leadership has received significant attention over the past years. Now is the time to refine how leaders impact on followers and their attitudes. This study examines how inspirational leaders influence follower characteristics (FC), and in turn, their happiness at work. In this study, the mediating effect of follower characteristics in the relationship between inspirational leadership and happiness at work was specifically examined. Data was gathered from 389 frontline banking employees working in Italian and Spanish banks. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed a positive partial mediating role of follower characteristics in the relationship between inspirational leadership and h…
