Action research strategies at the “third place”

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Action Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1688/IJAR-2014-02-Johnsen This article discusses action research strategies in regional development. It argues that regional settings are complex, and conceptualises this as the “third place”. This complexity implies a democratic challenge. Furthermore, using regional leadership as a case, it argues that in order to approach this as action researchers, one needs to discuss the assumptions the research is based on. The article discusses two action research approaches: the socio-technical approach and the democratic dialogue approach, and argues …

Measurement of 210Pb airborne activity concentration by gamma-ray spectrometry of air particulate samplings

2009

Lead-210 (half-life 22.3 y), is a natural radionuclide, being produced in the atmosphere through radon decay. Due to its affinity for particles, it is rapidly fixed by aerosols and, with its long half-life is the most important tracer of long range atmospheric aerosol transport and removal processes. Main measurement techniques adopted to evaluate 210Pb air activity concentration differ in analysis and sample preparation methods. Some of them involved complex chemical processes or decay product detection (for example 210Po), with a long decay time period between sampling and experimental measurement. The availability of an high-volume particulate sampler (about 900 m3 h-1) combined with a l…

LEAD(II) AND CADMIUM(II) REMOVAL FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS USING HAZELNUT AND ALMOND SHELLS SORBENT MATERIALS

2016

Removal of toxic metal ions from natural and waste waters is of great importance for the health of living organisms and for environmental protection. Alternatively to the conventional chemical treatments, such as precipitation, reverse osmosis, etc, biosorption shows a growing interest for toxic metal ions removal from contaminated aqueous solutions. The sorption ability of every type of biomass towards metal ions depends on many variables that characterize the solution. Among these, the ionic strength (I) is one of the most important and cannot be neglected during an accurate adsorption study. For this reason and with the aim of quantitatively define the influence of I, here are reported t…

Agency-centred coupling — a better way to manage an educational organization?

2014

Teachers at the present time face continuous changes in their work and organizational practices. However, we lack empirical evidence as to what this implies for teachers and their work. This paper describes how two Finnish educational organizations restrict or enable teachers’ professional agency, in terms of how the teachers influence the conditions and contents of their work. The paper further addresses how agency is related to: (i) organizational and educational transformations, (ii) teachers’ professional development and identity negotiations and (iii) teachers’ commitment to the educational organization and well-being at work. This paper provides the comparative research evidence on bo…

Nickel, lead, and cadmium induce differential cellular responses in sea urchin embryos by activating the synthesis of different HSP70s.

2004

Treatment with heavy metals, such as nickel, lead or cadmium, elicits different cellular stress responses according to the metal used and the length of treatment. In Paracentrotus lividus embryos the inducible forms of HSP70 (HSP70/72) are different in molecular mass from the constitutively expressed HSP75, and they can be used as markers of cellular stress. Even a short treatment with each metal induces the synthesis of HSP70/72 which remain stable for at least 20 h and differ little in their isoelectric points. Continuous treatment from fertilization with nickel or lead produces late irregular pluteus embryos, with peak HSP70/72 synthesis at blastula followed by the arrest of synthesis by…

Synthesis of curcumin derivatives and analysis of their antitumor effects in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines

2019

We analyzed antitumor effects of a series of curcumin analogues. Some of them were obtained by reaction of substitution involving the two phenolic OH groups of curcumin while the analogues with a substituent at C-4 was prepared following an original procedure that regards the condensation of benzenesulfenic acid onto the nucleophilic central carbon of the curcumin skeleton. We analyzed cytotoxic effects of such derivatives on two TNBC (triple negative breast cancer) cell lines, SUM 149 and MDA-MB-231, but only three of them showed an IC50 in a lower micromolar range with respect to curcumin. We also focused on these three derivatives that in both cell lines exhibited a higher or at least eq…

Laadunhallinnan kriittiset menestystekijät ja niiden vaikutus palvelupisteen laatujohtamiseen ITIL-organisaatiossa

2017

Laatu on yksi merkittävimmistä organisaation päätöksentekoon vaikuttavista tekijöistä. Onnistuneen laadunhallinnan kriittiset menestystekijät määräytyvät organisaatiokohtaisesti, ja niihin voidaan vaikuttaa etenkin johtamistyylillä. Lisäksi ITIL-viitekehys voi ohjata organisaation toimintaa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten laadunhallinnan kriittiset menestystekijät vaikuttavat palvelupisteiden laatujohtamiseen ITIL-viitekehystä noudatettavassa ITpalvelutuotannon organisaatiossa. Teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä laatu kuvataan prosessien lopputuotteen erinomaisuutena. Lisäksi esitellään kokonaisvaltaisen laadunhallinnan kriittiset menestystekijät ja organisaation laatujohtam…
