Thrombo-Inflammation in Cardiovascular Disease
2020
AbstractThrombo-inflammation describes the complex interplay between blood coagulation and inflammation that plays a critical role in cardiovascular diseases. The third Maastricht Consensus Conference on Thrombosis assembled basic, translational, and clinical scientists to discuss the origin and potential consequences of thrombo-inflammation in the etiology, diagnostics, and management of patients with cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. This article presents a state-of-the-art reflection of expert opinions and consensus recommendations regarding the following topics: (1) challenges of the endothelial cell barrier; (2) circulating …
Effectiveness of an educational leaflet on the prevention of external genital warts recurrences
2005
The study aims to assess the effectiveness of an educational leaflet in the prevention of external genital warts recurrences after achieving clearance with topical immune response modifiers treatment. A six-month follow-up, prospective, open, multi-centre randomized by centres study was conducted, which included a total of 216 patients. A total of 103 (47.7%) patients were given an educational leaflet. In all, 201 subjects (93.1%) came to the second follow-up visit, of which 62.7% achieved condyloma acuminatum (CA) clearance. During follow-up, 15% (confidence intervals [CI] 95%, 7.1–26.6%) of the patients who were given the educational leaflet, and 33.3% (CI 95%, 20.4–48.4%) of those who w…
Mitral valve aneurysm revealed by cross-sectional echocardiography in a patient with mitral valve prolapse
1984
We report a cerebral ischemia in a 23-year-old woman, in whom a mitral valve aneurysm with thrombotic masses was diagnosed by cross-sectional echocardiography. A prolapsing mitral leaflet was also visualized.
Hypoplasia of the posterior mitral valve leaflet: Don't forget to look beyond the mitral valve.
2020
Hypoplasia of the posterior mitral valve leaflet (PMVL) is a very rare finding in adulthood and can coexist with other congenital heart defects. In this image, a transesophageal echocardiography (TOE) carried out on a 59-year-old woman with a 2-month history of dyspnea revealed a hypoplastic PMVL causing severe mitral regurgitation associated with a secundum-type atrial septal defect (ASD) with left-to-right shunting. This case demonstrates how essential 3-dimensional TOE is for a comprehensive assessment of the mitral valve and to improve the diagnostic accuracy of concomitant congenital heart abnormalities.
Congenital mitral regurgitation caused by a perforation in the anterior leaflet: Perioperative evaluation by color-coded Doppler echocardiography
1990
Color-coded two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography confirmed the presence of severe congenital mitral regurgitation in an 8-month-old infant. Intraoperative inspection revealed an isolated perforation in the anterior leaflet.
Physiological Micromechanics of the Anterior Mitral Valve Leaflet
2011
An improved understanding of mitral valve (MV) function remains an important goal for determining mechanisms underlying valve disease and for developing novel therapies. Critical to heart valve tissue homeostasis is the valvular interstitial cells (VICs), which reside in the interstitium and maintain the extracellular matrix (ECM) through both protein synthesis and enzymatic degradation [1]. There is scant experimental data on the alterations of the MV fiber network reorganization as a function of load, which is critical for implementation of computational strategies that attempt to link this meso-micro scale phenomenon. The observed large scale deformations experienced by VICs could be imp…
Alterations in the Microstructure of the Anterior Mitral Valve Leaflet Under Physiological Stress

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT OF 537 DOGS WITH MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE AND LEAFLET INVOLVEMENT
2009
In this work we investigated which mitral valve leaflet was most often involved in mitral valve prolapse with degenerative mitral valve disease and whether there was an association with breed, age, gender, or weight. Five hundred and thirty-seven dogs with mitral valve prolapse-degenerative mitral valve disease were assessed; the cross-breed dog was the most represented breed (248 dogs, 46.2%). Mitral valve prolapse was more common in male dogs, and the average age was 11.3 +/- 2.8 years. Prolapse of the anterior leaflet was present in 48.4% of dogs, prolapse of the the posterior leaflet in 7.1%, and bileaflet prolapse was present in 44.5%; this distribution is different than that typically…
