Abstract The aim of the current study was to investigate the shot performance of elite female water polo players according to their match outcome during three international tournaments, the 2012 Olympic Games, 2013 and 2014 FINA World Leagues. Twenty-four official matches footage [2012 Summer Olympic Games, n=8; 2013 FINA World League, n=8 and 2014 FINA World League, n=8] were obtained and analysed. Differences in Technical Development and Playing Space in Three UEFA Champions Leagues

2021

[Abstract] The analysis of football grows exponentially, with many researchers adopting it as an object of study. The thematic range that addresses it, as well as the different methodologies used, are of a very different nature—physical, psychological, technical, tactical—enriching every day the knowledge, and understanding of the game itself. The objective of this study has been to identify the differences between the different styles of play that lead to becoming the champion of the UEFA Champions League in the last 3 years of the pre-COVID stage, by analyzing the spatial performance developed, the association between the players that make up the different lines of the game system and the…

The Mediterranean in the foreign policy of the second Spanish republic

1998

The principal reference points for the foreign policy of the Second Republic were the League of Nations and the Anglo‐French axis. In both areas of policy making, the conditioning factor was Spain's position geographically and strategically and its interest in the security of the western Mediterranean. Its participation in the successive plans to draw up a Mediterranean pact and in the Mediterranean conflicts of the period was characterized by its role as a secondary figure within that axis and by its policy of adaptation as a neutral country to the crisis of the system of collective security.

Urban Development and Social Change in Qatar: The Qatar National Vision 2030 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup

2012

On 2 December 2010, Qatar, the exotic outsider, surprisingly won the bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, thereby becoming the first Middle Eastern country chosen to host the global festival of this ‘royal football league’. Qataris have high hopes for the tournament, and ambitious aims for their country's development in preparation for 2022 and beyond. Since the rise to power of the current Amir, Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, in 1995, he has gradually introduced neoliberal policies in an attempt to build a knowledge-based economy. These developments are taking place in the context of Qatar's National Vision 2030, the blueprint for Qatar's economic, social, human, and environmental developm…

Supporters’ attitudes towards European football governance: structural dimensions and sociodemographic patterns

2020

The role of fans in football governance is a topic of increasing academic and political interest. This article offers a quantitative approach to investigate supporters’ opinions of governance structures in European football. It asks whether fans trust governing bodies, clubs, leagues and other stakeholders currently in charge of football governance. It also investigates the extent to which fans consider they should have a direct say on how football clubs are governed. Drawing on concepts from sports governance literature, an online survey collects opinions of football fans in six European countries (United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, Poland, France, and Germany). The results indicate a high lev…

Does a red shirt improve sporting performance? Evidence from Spanish football

2011

Recent research has linked red shirts to sporting success. In this article, we analyse the relationship between the colour red and sporting performance in the Spanish Professional Football League. Our foremost conclusion is that once the effect of the different endowments of resources and the ability of managers have been discounted, teams with red shirts do not show greater performance than teams wearing shirts of other colours.

The Media as a Policy Instrument in Influencing the Business Model of Professional Soccer. Evidence from Italy

2012

Italian soccer clubs in the first division have individually sold broadcasting rights for their home matches, until new laws imposed pooling and joint-selling those rights through the league and established a mandatory sharing rule to redistribute revenues in order to improve on-the-pitch competitive balance (CB). This article compares the two institutional designs. While reducing revenue inequality, the new regime distorts allocative efficiency and informational rent appropriation, opens up costly ex post renegotiations and antitrust litigations, and does not improve CB.

Semi-strong inefficiency in the fixed odds betting market: Underestimating the positive impact of head coach replacement in the main European soccer …

2019

Abstract In this paper we analyse the efficiency of the sports betting market, seeking to ascertain whether the market is efficient in the case of fixed odds provided by bookmakers in the four major European soccer leagues under the semi-strong efficiency hypothesis. By examining the trends of odds in the event of a major change in expectations about team results, i.e. when the head coach of a team is replaced, we attempt to verify the argument that a profitable strategy for the bettor is likely to be possible. In this case, the market under consideration would be inefficient. Analysing the average effect of head coach replacement, we find a positive impact on team performance. Based on thi…
