Visual Contrast Modulates Operant Learning Responses in Larval Zebrafish.
2018
The larval zebrafish is a promising vertebrate model organism to study neural mechanisms underlying learning and memory due to its small brain and rich behavioral repertoire. Here, we report on a high-throughput operant conditioning system for zebrafish larvae, which can simultaneously train 12 fish to associate a visual conditioned pattern with electroshocks. We find that the learning responses can be enhanced by the visual contrast, not the spatial features of the conditioned patterns, highlighted by several behavioral metrics. By further characterizing the learning curves as well as memory extinction, we demonstrate that the percentage of learners and the memory length increase as the co…
AnatomySketch : An Extensible Open-Source Software Platform for Medical Image Analysis Algorithm Development
2021
AbstractThe development of medical image analysis algorithm is a complex process including the multiple sub-steps of model training, data visualization, human–computer interaction and graphical user interface (GUI) construction. To accelerate the development process, algorithm developers need a software tool to assist with all the sub-steps so that they can focus on the core function implementation. Especially, for the development of deep learning (DL) algorithms, a software tool supporting training data annotation and GUI construction is highly desired. In this work, we constructed AnatomySketch, an extensible open-source software platform with a friendly GUI and a flexible plugin interfac…
Positive Effects of Videogame Use on Visuospatial Competencies: The Impact of Visualization Style in Preadolescents and Adolescents
2019
Use of videogames (VGs) is almost ubiquitous in preadolescents' and adolescents' everyday life. One of the most intriguing research topics about positive effects of VG use is about the domain of visuospatial competencies. Previous research show that training with videogames enables children and adolescents to improve their scores in visuospatial tests (such as mental rotation of shapes and cubes), and that such training could overcome gender differences in these domains. Our study aimed at (1) verifying the positive effects of videogame use in the visuospatial domain both for male and female adolescents and preadolescents and (2) verifying whether the visualization style (2D or isometric 3D…
Vocabulary learning strategies : a study on Finnish first-year high school students’ independent vocabulary learning
2009
Oikealle alalle? : logistiikka-alan ammattikoulutuksen ja työelämän osaamisen todellisuuksien kohtaaminen
2016
The aim of this doctoral thesis was to study how vocational education and training (VET) and working life encounter each other. Naturally the research topic chosen was selected from the researcher´s own professional field, i.e., logistics education. The research task was to examine, how VET-students' professional expectations in the study field of logistics encounter with the working life realities. The main research question was “How do the logistics (driver training) students’ vocational expectations encounter with the requirements of dynamically changing working life from the point of view of the vocational competence, the time span of 2001-2025?” The two sub-questions were 1) How do the…

Learning across contexts: How can vocational teachers facilitate boundary learning for students in work-based placements?
2022
A well-known challenge in vocational education and training (VET) programmes is the lack of coherence between school-based and workplace learning. The Norwegian VET model consists of two years of upper secondary education followed by two years of apprenticeship at work. This small-scale study of vocational teacher’s vocational didactics aims to investigate boundary learning at the VET Programme for Sales and Service at the Norwegian upper secondary level. The research question explored is: How can vocational teachers improve boundary learning for students in work-based placements in the subject vocational in-depth study (YFF)? The methodological approach is qualitative interviews with vocat…
In ques…
