Differential geometric least angle regression: a differential geometric approach to sparse generalized linear models
2013
Summary Sparsity is an essential feature of many contemporary data problems. Remote sensing, various forms of automated screening and other high throughput measurement devices collect a large amount of information, typically about few independent statistical subjects or units. In certain cases it is reasonable to assume that the underlying process generating the data is itself sparse, in the sense that only a few of the measured variables are involved in the process. We propose an explicit method of monotonically decreasing sparsity for outcomes that can be modelled by an exponential family. In our approach we generalize the equiangular condition in a generalized linear model. Although the …
Structure and evolution of a European Parliament via a network and correlation analysis
2016
We present a study of the network of relationships among elected members of the Finnish parliament, based on a quantitative analysis of initiative co-signatures, and its evolution over 16 years. To understand the structure of the parliament, we constructed a statistically validated network of members, based on the similarity between the patterns of initiatives they signed. We looked for communities within the network and characterized them in terms of members' attributes, such as electoral district and party. To gain insight on the nested structure of communities, we constructed a hierarchical tree of members from the correlation matrix. Afterwards, we studied parliament dynamics yearly, wi…
IndElec: A Software for Analyzing Party Systems and Electoral Systems
2011
IndElec is a software addressed to compute a wide range of indices from electoral data, which are intended to analyze both party systems and electoral systems in political studies. Further, IndElec can calculate such indices from electoral data at several levels of aggregation, even when the acronyms of some political parties change across districts. As the amount of information provided by IndElec may be considerable, this software also aids the user in the analysis of electoral data through three capabilities. First, IndElec automatically elaborates preliminary descriptive statistical reports of computed indices. Second, IndElec saves the computed information into text files in data matri…
Electoral digital communication : a new stage in the commodification of politics?
2022
Online election campaigns and associated professional practices in digital and electoral communication have brought electoral work to new horizons where performance through web technologies and the exploitation of online data mark a new stage in the commodification of politics. Through digital communicators and specialists, campaign teams learn new methods and professional practices to manage an election campaign. The introduction of new digital tools for the administration of communication operations thus induces new processes whose object of this research is to be interested, on the basis of online supports and interviews, The European Parliament’s Committee on Employment, Social Affairs …

Wavelet-like efficient analysis of two-dimensional arbitrarily shaped radomes using a surface formulation
2007
[1] Radomes are usually made of lossy dielectric materials, and their accurate analysis is often cumbersome because of their typical large electrical size and geometrical complexity. In real reflector antenna structures, there are always complex interactions between the radome, the reflector surfaces and the directional feeds, which are typically neglected for the sake of simplicity. In this paper we will consider all such interactions in a very accurate way, thus requiring a high number of unknowns for the numerical solution of the problem. To overcome such drawback, an integral equation formulation based on the Equivalence Principle in combination with the wavelet transform has been emplo…
Un sistema de indicadores para el seguimiento y evaluación de la gestión sostenible del patrimonio cultural
2013
This paper describes the general procedure followed to build a system of indicators for monitoring and evaluating the Strategy for Culture and Development of Spanish Cooperation. Taking the Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage as a reference, in this study an approach is made to questions relative to: 1) the process of evaluating a list of indicators by a panel of experts using the Delphi technique, 2) the definition and calculation of a relative operational index, 3) the process of indicator selection, and lastly, 4) how the selected indicators were assigned to form part of the basic or strategic dimension on which the system is structured. En este trabajo se describe el procedimie…
TRPV1 channels as putative targets in the cannabinoid-mediated synaptic activity of hippocampal neurons
Endocannabinoids (eCBs) play a critical part in pathophysiological conditions rooted on neuronal excitability such as epilepsy. eCBs seem to be involved in neuroprotection, putatively acting on the cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1r), but also on Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid type 1 channels (TRPV1). Indeed, CB1r and TRPV1 are involved in the transduction of stimuli at synaptic level, though exact molecular mechanisms are far from being unveiled. Thus, we aimed to investigate the role of CB1r/TRPV1 interplay in the rat hippocampal neurotransmission by whole-cell patch clamp technique to evaluate excitatory bioelectric activity in the CA1. We pharmacologically manipulated this pathwa…
Attitudes and perceptions of faculty members in the process adopting innovation: The OpenCourseWare initiative at the University of Valencia, Spain
2014
The OpenCourseWare project, an open learning resource repository, was established at the University of Valencia between 2008 and2009. It initially consisted of only 10 subjects, none of which was in the field of Health Sciences. The objective of this research was toinvestigate the attitudes and perceptions of faculty members in the field of Health Sciences with regard to the project to identify strategies to increase its use and expand its coverage. We applied Rogers’ innovation-diffusion theory along with a qualitative approach using theoretical sampling, semi-structured interviews and open coding. The results indicate the existence of two categories of faculty members. In the first group,…
Estimación del impacto económico de los museos a través de las nuevas tecnologías de la información: el caso del museo Ene.Térmica
2015
It is increasingly necessary to emphasize the potential of culture as an engine for economic development and its ability to generateincome and create jobs. For this reason, this paper evaluates the economic impact of the Ene.térmica museum in the territory in which it is located, Ponferrada (Castilla y León Community, Spain). In order to achieve this aim, the estimation of the different types of effects needed to determine the impact of economic of the activities linked to the existence of Ene.Térmica is calculated by using the tool Impactrimonio, a web-based application that applies the Input-Output Tables methodology. The results show that due to both activities of the museum and demand f…
