Frequency of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation

2015

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is significantly related to adverse clinical outcomes in patients at high risk of cardiovascular events. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), data on LVH, that is, prevalence and determinants, are inconsistent mainly because of different definitions and heterogeneity of study populations. We determined echocardiographic-based LVH prevalence and clinical factors independently associated with its development in a prospective cohort of patients with non-valvular (NV) AF. From the "Atrial Fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial Index Prevalence Assessment: Collaborative Italian Study" (ARAPACIS) population, 1,184 patients with NVAF (mean age 72 ± 11 yea…

Antihypertensive and cardiovascular effects of combined blockade of renin-angiotensin system with ACE inhibitor and angiotensin II type 1 receptor bl…

2006

Background: In this study the effects of 24 weeks losartan and ramipril treatment, both alone and in combination, on blood pressure and left ventricular mass (LVM) and function, have been evaluated in hypertensives. Methods. 57 hypertensives with stage 1 and 2 essential hypertension were included. After 4 weeks run in, a randomized double-blind, 3 arm, double dummy, independent trial was used. All patients were randomly allocated to 3 treatment arms consisting of losartan (50 mg/daily), ramipril (5 mg/daily), and combined (losartan 50 mg/ramipril 5 mg/daily) for 24 weeks. LVM, LVM/h and other echocardiographic measurements, BUN, creatinine and clearance and potassium were determined after ru…

The effects of canrenone on left ventricle diastolic function, left atrial compliance and on atrial natriuretic hormones in some subjects with “chall…

2010

STUDY PROPOSAL: Proposal to evaluate the response of left ventricular function of 30 patients with challenge hypertension to 50 or 100 mg of canrenone. Evaluation will be performed by repeated control of echocardiographic parameters, left atrial function and NT-proBNP. We also will use Tissue Doppler Imaging to identify and follow early left ventricular dysfunction. Careful monitoring of serum creatinine and electrolyte levels will be carried out. At the end of the study we will be able to identify the best dose of aldosterone we can recommend to control hypertension and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. In possible successive evaluations other end points such as mortality, morbility,…

May Adiponectin be considered as a Novel Cardiometabolic Biomarker?

2014

This study was designed to evaluate the interaction between total adiponectin (ADPN) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) on cardiac changes in 135 subjects with and without MetS, subgrouped according to normal or low ADPN. Left ventricular internal diameter (LVID/h), LV mass (LVM), LVM index (LVMI), interventricular septal thickness (IVST), relative wall thickness (RWT) and LV ejection fraction (EF) by echocardiography and diastolic parameters, by pulsed-wave Doppler were calculated. BMI, LVM, LVMI, LVID/h, IVST and RWT values were significantly (p<0.05) higher in both groups with low ADPN. Prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (p<0.001) and coronary artery disease (p<0.01) was significantly…

Effects of a short-term hypoenergetic diet on morphofunctional left ventricular parameters in centrally obese subjects

2000

BACKGROUND: We aimed to study centrally obese subjects without other diseases, to establish whether a short-term hypoenergetic balanced regimen is able to positively modify left ventricular (LV) patterns. METHODS: We studied 32 obese subjects (out of 52 recruited for this study) with central fat distribution and without associated diseases. Each subject had undergone a moderately hypoenergetic diet for a four-month follow-up period and had a regular loss in weight. Some relevant clinical and echocardiographic parameters were evaluated. Baseline data and those evaluated at the end of the follow-up period were used for outcome analysis. RESULTS: We found a considerable reduction in LV mass an…

Micro-albuminuria in obese subjects: relationship among body fat distribution, blood pressure and left ventricular structure and function.

1998

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationships among micro-albuminuria, blood pressure and measurements of left ventricular structure and function in centrally and peripherally obese subjects compared with members of a lean control group. METHODS: Centrally obese subjects were subdivided according to whether they had levels of micro-albuminuria higher than 30 mg/24 h (micro-albuminuric group) or lower than or equal to 30 mg/24 h (normo-albuminuric group). For all the subjects we measured heart rate, casual mean blood pressure (MBP), 24 h MBP, total cholesterol level, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, lipoprotein (a) level, fasting immunoreactive insulin level, plasma renin activity, plasma al…

Left ventricular non compaction: epidemiology, clinical findings, diagnosis and therapy

2014

Abstract Left ventricular non compaction (LVNC) is a cardiomyopathy due to an arrest of the normal development of myocardium which determines the persistence of foetal myocardium in post--natal life in at least 2/3 of the wall (criterion known as non compacted/ compacted ratio greater than 2). Although in absence of a confirmed prevalence of LVNC, reviewing literature shows an increasing number of reports over the years, though diagnosed cases represent just the tip of a realistically far wider phenomenon. Clinical manifestations are variable, ranging from the absence of any symptom to congestive heart failure, arrhythmias and systemic thromboembolism. Echocardiography is the gold standard …

[OP.2D.05] RELATIONSHIP OF OXIDATIVE STRESS WITH CARDIAC HYPERTROPHY IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS

2016

OBJECTIVE: Left ventricular hypertrophy is common in hypertensive patients. In these subjects increased oxidative stress has been observed. Our aim was to evaluate the association of biomarkers of both oxidative stress and inflammation with markers of cardiovascular damage in a large group of hypertensives with different stages of renal function. DESIGN AND METHOD: In 517 hypertensives we analyzed left ventricular mass indexed for body surface area, and we assayed plasma levels of 8-isoprostaglandin F2alpha and high sensitivity C reactive protein. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis carried out considering left ventricular mass as dependent variable, and including 8-isoprostaglandin F2alpha, hig…

Echocardiographic Assessment of Ventricular Septal Rupture and Left Ventricular Aneurysm after Inferior and Posterior Myocardial Infarction

2018

We present a case of posterior ventricular septal rupture associated to left ventricular aneurysm manged, during peri-operative period, by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography findings add adjunctive and more accurate information regarding morphological details of the ventricular septal rupture rather than two-dimensional echocardiography, allowing, meanwhile, the detection of the outcome of the surgical repair.
