Lepton Number Violation in Higgs Decay at LHC

2015

We show that within the Left-Right symmetric model, lepton number violating decays of the Higgs boson can be discovered at the LHC. The process is due to the mixing of the Higgs with the triplet that breaks parity. As a result, the Higgs can act as a gateway to the origin of heavy Majorana neutrino mass. To assess the LHC reach, a detailed collider study of the same-sign di-leptons plus jets channel is provided. This process is complementary to the existing nuclear and collider searches for lepton number violation and can probe the scale of parity restoration even beyond other direct searches.

Effects of triplet Higgs bosons in long baseline neutrino experiments

2018

The triplet scalars $(\Delta=\Delta^{++},\Delta^{+},\Delta^{0})$, utilized in the so-called Type-II seesaw model to explain the lightness of neutrinos, would generate nonstandard interactions (NSI) for neutrino propagating in matter. We investigate the prospects to probe these interactions in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We analyze the upper bounds that the proposed DUNE experiment might set on the nonstandard parameters and numerically derive upper bounds, as function of the lightest neutrino mass, on the ratio the mass $M_\Delta$ of the triplet scalars and strength $|\lambda_\phi|$ of the coupling $\phi\phi\Delta$ of the triplet $\Delta$ and conventional Higgs doublet $…

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance characterization of a hamartoma in an asyntomatic child

2009

Abstract Background The prevalence of primary cardiac neoplasms is approximately 0.3% and these masses should be distinguished from many of other primary and secondary processes that can occur in the heart. Further assessment of the left ventricular mass presents important clinical implications. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance was used. Clinical case An asyntomatic 12-year-old child was referred for cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to further assess a left ventricular mass found after an echocardiography, executed for assessment for sport activity. His past medical history was absolutely negative. The patient was in optimal state of health. The EKG showed an aspecific ST elevatio…

Perlecan is critical for heart stability

2008

Aims Perlecan is a heparansulfate proteoglycan found in basement membranes, cartilage, and several mesenchymal tissues that form during development, tumour growth, and tissue repair. Loss-of-function mutations in the perlecan gene in mice are associated with embryonic lethality caused primarily by cardiac abnormalities probably due to hemopericards. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanism underlying the early embryonic lethality and the pathophysiological relevance of perlecan for heart function. Methods and results Perlecan-deficient murine embryonic stem cells were used to investigate the myofibrillar network and the electrophysiological properties of single cardiomy…

Half-width plots, a simple tool to predict peak shape, reveal column kinetics and characterise chromatographic columns in liquid chromatography: Stat…

2013

Peak profiles in chromatography are characterised by their height, position, width and asymmetry; the two latter depend on the values of the left and right peak half-widths. Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution, the plots are parabolic, although often, the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics, eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mas…

Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution the plots are parabolic although often the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mass transfer the plots will be solute dependent and should be obtained with the data for each solute eluted with mobile phases at varying composition. The half-width plots approach is a simple tool that facilitates the prediction of peak shape (width and asymmetry) with optimisation purposes reveal the interaction kinetics of solutes in different columns and characterise chromatographic columns. This work shows half-width plots for different situations in isocratic elution including the use of different flows the effect of temperature the modification of the stationary phase surface by an additive the existence of specific interactions within the column and the comparison of columns. The adaptation to gradient elution is also described. Previous knowledge on half-width plots is structured and analysed to which new results are added.Work (thermodynamics)Column characterisationmedia_common.quotation_subjectKineticsLiquid chromatographyAnalytical chemistryHalf-widthsInteraction kineticsBiochemistryAsymmetryAnalytical ChemistryPeak shapeColumn (typography)Position (vector)Mass transferPhase (matter)media_commonChromatographyElutionChemistryOrganic ChemistryGeneral MedicineModels TheoreticalKineticsPredictionChromatography LiquidJournal of Chromatography A

Orofacial features and medical profile of eight individuals with Kabuki syndrome

2019

Background To evaluate oral, craniofacial and systemic characteristics of eight patients with Kabuki syndrome (KS), aged between 3 and 16 years old. Material and Methods In this retrospective study, medical records of all patients were reviewed for information on family history, growth and development, medications in use, general systemic complications and oral and craniofacial characteristics. Results The medical alterations found included recurrent infections such as pneumonia and otitis media (n = 6), cardiovascular malformations (n = 4), kidney abnormalities (n = 2), epilepsy (n = 2) and visual deficiency (n = 2). The individuals exhibited dental caries (n = 5), agenesis (n = 5), delaye…

CLEFT PALATE ONLY: CURRENT CONCEPTS

2017

Cleft palate only (CPO) is one of the most common congenital malformations worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of CPO is not completely understood. Environmental factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs during pregnancy, advanced paternal age, have been demonstrated to be a risk of CPO, but conflicting results have also been published. Insufficient intake of folic acid during the pregnancy has been suggested to increase the risk for CPO. The demonstrated risk for siblings and the higher risk for monozygotic twins suggest a genetic etiopathogenesis for CPO. In some cases of CPO a prevalent mode of inheritance has been reported, but oligogenic models with reduced penetrance,…

Pulmonale Hypertonie bei Linksherzerkrankungen

2010

The 2009 European Guidelines on Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension have been adopted for Germany. While the guidelines contain detailed recommendations regarding pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), they contain only a relatively short paragraph on other, much more frequent forms of PH such as PH due to left heart disease. Despite the lack of data, targeted PAH treatments are increasingly being used for PH associated with left heart disease. This development is of concern. On the other hand, PH is a frequent problem that is highly relevant for morbidity and mortality in patients with left heart disease, so that it may be speculated whether selected patients may benefit from…
