Rapid left ventricular filling in untreated hypertensive subjects with or without left ventricular hypertrophy

1992

In this study, independent contribution of age, HR, BMI, casual and ambulatory blood pressure, LVM and LVEF in evaluating diastolic filling have been investigated in 34 never-treated hypertensive patients and in 15 healthy normotensive subjects. All the subjects were free from coronary artery disease, valvular disease, heart failure, renal disease and psychiatric problems. All the hypertensive subjects (never treated) were subgrouped according to presence or absence of LVH. The PFR decreased significantly and tPFR increased significantly in hypertensive patients in comparison with normotensive subjects and they did not change in the presence vs absence of LVH. The PFR was inversely correlat…

Relationship between device acceptance and patient-reported outcomes in Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) recipients

2019

AbstractThe number of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) implanted each year is rising. Nevertheless, there are minimal data on device acceptance after LVAD implant, and on its relationship with patient-reported outcomes. We designed a cross-sectional study to address this knowledge gap and test the hypothesis that low device acceptance is associated with poorer quality of life, depression and anxiety. Self-report questionnaires were administered to assess quality of life (12-item Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire quality of life subscale), level of anxiety (7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder; GAD-7), level of depression (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire; PHQ-9) and device a…

Beta-adrenergic stimulation enhances left ventricular diastolic performance in normal subjects.

1997

To determine the effects of beta-adrenergic stimulation on transmitral Doppler echocardiography flow characteristics of left ventricular diastolic filling, we studied 10 healthy volunteers aged 23-31 years (mean age, 26.6 years) during intravenous infusion of isoprenaline in consecutive steps of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.75, and 1.5 micrograms/min (each for 15 min). Saline control infusion was given in the same manner in a crossover and blinded protocol. Compared with the infusion of placebo, stepwise increasing doses of isoprenaline caused a dose-related increase in early and late diastolic filling velocities and velocity-time integrals, a lengthening of the acceleration time, and a shortening of t…

The planimetric Grothoff's criteria by cardiac magnetic resonance can improve the specificity of left ventricular non-compaction diagnosis in thalass…

2020

We differentiated the left ventricle non-compaction (LVNC) from hypertrabeculated myocardium due to a negative remodeling in thalassemia intermedia (TI) patients applying linear and planimetric criteria and comparing the cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) findings. CMR images were analyzed in 181 TI patients enrolled in the Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia Network and 27 patients with proved LVNC diagnosis. The CMR diagnostic criteria applied in TI patients were: a modified linear CMR Petersen’s criterion based on a more restrictive ratio of diastolic NC/C > 2.5 at segmental level and the combination of planimetric Grothoff’s criteria (percentage of trabeculated LV myocardial…

Assessment of left ventricular function by breath-hold cine MR imaging: Comparison of different steady-state free precession sequences

2005

Purpose To compare steady-state free precession (SSFP) sequence protocols with different acquisition times (TA) and temporal resolutions (tRes) due to the implementation of a view sharing technique called shared phases for the assessment of left ventricular (LV) function by breath-hold cine magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Materials and Methods End-diastolic and end-systolic volumes (EDV, ESV) were measured in contiguous short-axis slices with a thickness of 8 mm acquired in 10 healthy male volunteers. The following true fast imaging with steady-state precession (TrueFISP) sequence protocols were compared: protocol A) internal standard of reference, segmented: tRes 34.5 msec, TA 18 beats pe…

rTMS of the prefrontal cortex in the treatment of chronic migraine: a pilot study

2004

A recent fMRI study showed that dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) exerts an inhibitory control on pain pathways in humans. We investigated whether high-frequency rTMS over left DLPFC could ameliorate chronic migraine. Treatment consisted of 12 rTMS sessions, delivered in alternate days over left DLPFC. Sham rTMS was used as placebo. Eleven patients were randomly assigned to the rTMS (n=6) or to the placebo (n=5) treatment. Measures of attack frequency, headache index, number of abortive medications (outcome measures) were recorded in the month before, during and in the month after treatment. Subjects treated by rTMS showed a significant reduction of the outcome measures during and in t…

Dissociable contributions of left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in planning.

2010

It is well established that the mid-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) plays a critical role in planning. Neuroimaging studies have yielded predominantly bilateral dlPFC activations, but the existence and nature of functionally specific contributions of left and right dlPFC have remained elusive. In recent experiments, 2 independent parameters have been identified which substantially determine planning: 1) the degree of interdependence between consecutive steps (search depth) and 2) the degree to which the configuration of the goal state renders the order of single steps either clearly evident or ambiguous (goal hierarchy). Thus, search depth affects the actual mental generation and eva…

Posterior interosseous nerve of the elbow at the arcade of Frohse: Ultrasound appearance in asymptomatic subjects

2019

PURPOSE To assess the normal values of the antero-posterior (AP) diameter of the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) of the elbow as it passes beneath the arcade of Frohse and to search for PIN-diameter differences between the upstream, entry point and downstream of the arcade. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty asymptomatic patients prospectively underwent bilateral B-mode ultrasound of the PIN of the elbow. There were 15 men and 15 women with a mean age of 30.2±5.31 (SD) years (range: 26-43 years). Of these, 23 patients were right-handers (23/30; 77%) and 7 were left handers (7/30; 23%). AP diameter of the PIN was measured in long axis at three different locations including the entry point of the…

Motivational factors modulate left frontoparietal network during cognitive control in cocaine addiction

2020

Cocaine addiction is characterized by alterations in motivational and cognitive processes involved in goal-directed behavior. Recent studies have shown that addictive behaviors can be attributed to alterations in the activity of large functional networks. The aim of this study was to investigate how cocaine addiction affected the left frontoparietal network during goal-directed behavior in a stop-signal task (SST) with reward contingencies by correct task performance. Twenty-eight healthy controls (HC) and 30 abstinent cocaine-dependent patients (ACD) performed SST with monetary reward contingencies while undergoing a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. The results showed that the l…

Central obesity and hypertensionThe role of plasma endothelin

1996

Hypertension and central obesity are two conditions closely linked, but the mechanisms responsible for obesity-associated hypertension are still unclear. In the last few years, several studies addressed the role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the development and maintenance of hypertension. This study was designed to evaluate plasma ET-1 in normotensive and hypertensive central obese subjects compared with a lean healthy group. Our final goal was to analyze the relationship between plasma ET-1, blood pressure, and left ventricular structure and function in central obese subjects (both normotensives and hypertensives). ET-levels have been assessed by the radioimmunoassay method in 20 lean normote…
