Absolute cross-sections for the nonresonant multi-photon ionization of toluene and xylene in the gas phase
2001
Abstract The absolute multi-photon ionization cross-section of the phenyl ring was determined by laser-ionization of toluene and xylene molecules in the gas phase. Excitation was achieved using nonresonant four-photon absorption of the frequency doubled light of a 10 ns pulsed Nd:YAG laser (532 nm). The resulting ions were stored in a Penning trap and detected by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The values of the cross-sections are 1.4(3)×10 −42 cm 8 W −4 s −1 and 1.3(3)×10 −42 cm 8 W −4 s −1 for toluene and xylene, respectively.
Special Calixarenes by Directed Syntheses
1997
The synthesis of special calixarenes and calixarene-like macrocyclic compounds via stepwise procedures and fragment condensation is reviewed. Among the compounds available are exo- and endo-calixarenes consisting of different phenolic units, having bridges other than methylene or showing inherent chirality (Cn-symmetry). Macrobi- and -tricyclic molecules such as bridged calixarenes, double calixarenes, bicyclocalixarenes and annelated calixarenes are also described. Single crystal X-ray structures are reported for several compounds. Some properties like conformational barriers, pKa values or the ability to complex metal ions are discussed, showing the potential of these compounds which may …

Enamines derived from cyclic ketones behave as difunctional intermediates when treated with phenyl isocyanate to produce dicarboxanilides. Reaction of bis(4-isocyanatophenyl)-methane with 1-N-morpholino-1-cyclopentene in DMSO leads to poly[iminocarbonyl(2-morpholino-1-cyclopenten-1.3-ylene)carbonylimino-p-phenylenemethylene-p-phenylene], a polyamide. The effects of various cyclic enamines and diisocyanates on the polymerization are surveyed. Morpholine and piperidine are more effective than pyrrolidine or dimethylamine when incorporated into cyclopentanone enamines. The molecular weight of the polymer decreases when the ring size of the ketone component is increased. The efficiency of the d…
Photochemical generation of benzene–naphthalene biplanemers
2005
Abstract A direct biplanemer synthesis could be achieved by a quantitative [4π+4π]photocycloaddition of benzyloxy substituted benzene and naphthalene rings ( 3d , e ⇄ 4d , e ). Since the products do not show a thermal Cope rearrangement—in contrast to the related longicyclic conjugated 9,10-benzotricyclo[4.2.2.2 2,5 ]dodeca-3,7,9-trienes—but a quantitative reverse reaction, they are interesting systems for an optical switching.

ChemInform Abstract: Donor-Stabilized Phosphenium Adducts as New Efficient and Immobilizing Ligands in Palladium-Catalyzed Alkynylation and Platinum-…
2009
The straightforward synthesis of a new donor-stabilized phosphenium ligand 3d by addition of bromodifurylphosphine to 1,3-dimethylimidazolium-2-carboxylate 1 is described. The obtained ligand exhibits a very strong π-acceptor character, comparable to that of triphenyl phosphite [P(OPh) 3 ] or of tris-halogenophosphines, with a v CO (A 1 ) at 2087 cm ―1 for its nickel tricarbonyl complex. This ligand, as well as the related 3a which was obtained from chlorodiphenylphosphine, were tested in palladium-catalyzed aryl alkynylation and in the platinum-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzenes, both in an ionic liquid phase. In C―C bond cross-coupling we observed that the increase o…
On the low-lying singlet excited states of styrene: a theoretical contribution
2000
The present contribution analyses the trans–cis photoisomerization mechanism of ethene and styrene on the singlet manifold. Within the framework of multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), the extended multistate approach (MS-CASPT2) is found to be flexible enough to describe energy hypersurfaces adiabatically. For ethene, torsion about the CC bond towards a perpendicular structure leads to a situation where the energy difference between the ground and the lowest excited state is still too large (2.5 eV) for efficient radiationless decay. However, the energy gap decreases to 0.4 eV when one of the methylene moieties is, in addition, pyramidalized from the twisted stru…
Stufenweise Darstellung von Cyclo{quater[(5-alkyl-2-hydroxy-1,3-phenylen)methylen]}en und ihr Vergleich mit linearen phenolischen Mehrkernverbindungen
1978
The stepwise syntheses of cyclo{quater[(5-alkyl-2-hydroxy-1,3-phenylene)methylene]}s (5) are described and compared with a one-flask reaction procedure. The structures of the cyclic compounds 5 are analytically confirmed and their properties were compared with those of linear phenol formaldehyde condensates which have very similar structures and molecular weights.
