Haemoptysis in adults: a 5-year study using the French nationwide hospital administrative database.

2015

Haemoptysis is a serious symptom with various aetiologies. Our aim was to define the aetiologies, outcomes and associations with lung cancer in the entire population of a high-income country. This retrospective multicentre study was based on the French nationwide hospital medical information database collected over 5 years (2008–2012). We analysed haemoptysis incidence, aetiologies, geographical and seasonal distribution and mortality. We studied recurrence, association with lung cancer and mortality in a 3-year follow-up analysis. Each year, ∼15 000 adult patients (mean age 62 years, male/female ratio 2/1) were admitted for haemoptysis or had haemoptysis as a complication of their hospital s…

Change from Hybrid to Fully Minimally Invasive and Robotic Esophagectomy is Possible without Compromises.

2018

Background The incidence of esophageal carcinoma is increasing in the western world, and esophageal resection is the essential therapy. Several studies report advantages of minimally invasive esophagectomies (MIEs) versus conventional open procedures (OPs). The benefits of the use of fully MIE or robot-assisted MIE (RAMIE) compared with the hybrid approaches (laparoscopic gastric preparation and open transthoracic esophagectomy) remain unclear. Methods Between July 2015 and August 2017, the data of 75 patients with esophageal carcinoma were prospectively registered. Of the 75 patients, 25 treated with a hybrid MIE (hybrid), 25 with total MIE (MIE), and 25 with RAMIE. All patients were oper…

German Thoracic Research Scholarship 1996: lung volume reduction for endstage pulmonary emphysema at the Washington University of St. Louis.

1998

The Thoracic Research Scholarship 1996 of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery enabled me to visit Barnes Hospital at the Washington University of St. Louis, USA, from May to July 1996. At that center Prof. J. D. Cooper has established lung-volume reduction surgery as a successful surgical treatment for patients with endstage pulmonary emphysema. The operation is performed using left-sided double-lumen intubation. After opening of the chest and pleura and starting single-lung ventilation the less diseased parts of the second lung collapse due to absorption atelectasis whereas the more diseased portion of the lung stays hyperinflated. Linear staplers buttressed with bov…

H(II) centers in natural silica under repeated UV laser irradiations

2004

We investigated the kinetics of H(II) centers (=Ge'-H) in natural silica under repeated 266nm UV irradiations performed by a Nd:YAG pulsed laser. UV photons temporarily destroy these paramagnetic defects, their reduction being complete within 250 pulses. After re-irradiation, H(II) centers grow again, and the observed recovery kinetics depends on the irradiation dose; multiple 2000 pulses re-irradiations induce the same post-irradiation kinetics of H(II) centers after each exposure cycle. The analysis of these effects allows us to achieve a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the centers during and after laser irradiation.

Boundary quotients and ideals of Toeplitz C∗-algebras of Artin groups

2006

We study the quotients of the Toeplitz C*-algebra of a quasi-lattice ordered group (G,P), which we view as crossed products by a partial actions of G on closed invariant subsets of a totally disconnected compact Hausdorff space, the Nica spectrum of (G,P). Our original motivation and our main examples are drawn from right-angled Artin groups, but many of our results are valid for more general quasi-lattice ordered groups. We show that the Nica spectrum has a unique minimal closed invariant subset, which we call the boundary spectrum, and we define the boundary quotient to be the crossed product of the corresponding restricted partial action. The main technical tools used are the results of …

Sharp estimate on the inner distance in planar domains

2020

We show that the inner distance inside a bounded planar domain is at most the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the boundary of the domain. We prove this sharp result by establishing an improved Painlev\'e length estimate for connected sets and by using the metric removability of totally disconnected sets, proven by Kalmykov, Kovalev, and Rajala. We also give a totally disconnected example showing that for general sets the Painlev\'e length bound $\kappa(E) \le\pi \mathcal{H}^1(E)$ is sharp.

Analytic Properties of Quasiconformal Mappings Between Metric Spaces

2012

We survey recent developments in the theory of quasiconformal mappings between metric spaces. We examine the various weak definitions of quasiconformality, and give conditions under which they are all equal and imply the strong classical properties of quasiconformal mappings in Euclidean spaces. We also discuss function spaces preserved by quasiconformal mappings.

On multiplicities of cocharacters for algebras with superinvolution

2021

Abstract In this paper we deal with finitely generated superalgebras with superinvolution, satisfying a non-trivial identity, whose multiplicities of the cocharacters are bounded by a constant. Along the way, we prove that the codimension sequence of such algebras is polynomially bounded if and only if their colength sequence is bounded by a constant.

Synthesis, spectroscopic studies (Mössbauer and infrared), and the crystal and molecular structure of the organotin(IV)-pyrazine adducts [Sn(CH3)2Cl2…

1987

Two adducts [Sn(CH 3 ) 2 Cl 2 ] 2 pyz ( Ia ) and Sn- (CH 3 ) 2 Br 2 pyz] ( Ib ) (pyz = pyrazine) have been synthesized and characterized in the solid state. Infrared and Mossbauer spectroscopies suggest a five- coordinated species for the Ia complex with an angular CSnC bond and a six-coordinated compound with a linear CSnC bond for the Ib complex. X-ray diffraction studies confirm a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry with N, Cl axial atoms and Cl and methyls in the equatorial plane for Ia where the Cl ax SnN bond angle is the lowest one reported to date and the Cl eq Sn bond distance the longest one with regard to similar complexes. This molecule has a short contact of 3.47 A b…
