Multi-channel and multi-angle algorithms for estimating sea and land surface temperature with ATSR data

Abstract A study has been carried out using LOWTRAN-7 simulations of the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) data at 11 and 12 μm wavelengths to compare the merits of the multi-angle technique with those of the currently used multi-channel technique (split-window method) to retrieve both sea surface temperature (SST) and land surface temperature (LST). To this end a simple single-channel double-angle viewing model is presented, which relates actual surface temperature to the two brightness temperatures measured from space in the two views of interest (ATSR nadir and forward). Dispersive interactions between atoms and nonplanar surfaces

We calculate the dispersive force between a ground state atom and a non planar surface. We present explicit results for a corrugated surface, derived from the scattering approach at first order in the corrugation amplitude. A variety of analytical results are derived in different limiting cases, including the van der Waals and Casimir-Polder regimes. We compute numerically the exact first-order dispersive potential for arbitrary separation distances and corrugation wavelengths, for a Rubidium atom on top of a silicon or gold corrugated surface. Universal critical behavior of curvature-dependent interfacial tension.

From the analysis of Monte Carlo simulations of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in the coexistence region, we provide evidence that the curvature dependence of the interfacial tension can be described by a simple theoretical function σ(R)ξ(2)=C(1)/[1+C(2)(ξ/R)(2)], where ξ is the correlation length and R is the droplet radius. The universal constants C(1) and C(2) are estimated. In the model, a Tolman length is strictly absent, but, since its critical behavior is believed to be much weaker than ξ, we argue that it only provides a correction to scaling and does not affect the leading critical behavior, which should be described by the above function for any system in the Ising universality cl…

Background and Objectives: The aim was to compare the intra and postoperative outcomes between the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol versus the standard of care protocol (SCP) in patients who underwent radical cystectomy performed by a single surgeon. Materials and Methods: A retrospective comparative study was conducted including patients who underwent radical cystectomy from 2017 to 2020. Rapid radiation of North American desert genera of the Papaveraceae: Evidence from restriction site mapping of PCR-amplified chloroplast DNA fragments

Phylogenetic relationships of a group of North American desert genera of the Papaveraceae subfam. Papaveroideae and Platystemonoideae were investigated with an RFLP analysis of three PCR-amplified chloroplast genome regions. In agreement with earlier results it was found that subfam. Platystemonoideae is nested within subfam. Papaveroideae. The group under study is characterized by a large number of generic autapomorphies but only few informative synapomorphies. This is interpreted as strong evidence for a rapid radiation event caused by major climatic changes in the past. Search for promptly produced heavy quarkonium states in hadronic Z decays

A search has been made for direct production of heavy quarkonium states in more than 3 million hadronic Z^{0} decays in the 1991-1994 DELPHI data. Prompt J/\psi, \psi(2S) and \Upsilon candidates have been searched for through their leptonic decay modes using criteria based on the kinematics and decay vertex positions. New upper limits are set at the 90 \% confidence level for {Br( Z^0 \rightarrow \left( Q \bar{Q} \right) X ) / Br( Z^0 \rightarrow \mbox{hadrons})} for various strong production mechanisms of J/\psi and \Upsilon; these range down to 0.9 \times 10^{-4}. Optical quenching and recovery of photoconductivity in single-crystal diamond

We study the photocurrent induced by pulsed-light illumination (pulse duration is several nanoseconds) of single-crystal diamond containing nitrogen impurities. Application of additional continuous-wave light of the same wavelength quenches pulsed photocurrent. Characterization of the optically quenched photocurrent and its recovery is important for the development of diamond based electronics and sensing. (C) 2017 Author(s). Sun induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SICF) emitted by phytoplankton provides considerable insights into the vital role of the carbon productivity of the earth’s aquatic ecosystems. However, the SICF signal leaving a water body is highly affected by the high spectral variability of its optically active constituents. To disentangle the SICF emission from the water-leaving radiance, a new high spectral resolution retrieval algorithm is presented, which significantly improves the fluorescence line height (FLH) method commonly used so far. A comparison of Microtops II and satellite ozone measurements in the period 2001-2011

Daily average total ozone Microtops measurements obtained during several campaigns conducted from 2001 to 2011 at latitudes from 31 to 68N and in different seasons are compared with satellite observations. The Microtops ozone is derived using different wavelength combinations (Channel I, 305.5/312.5. nm; Channel II, 312.5/320. nm; and Channel III, 305.5/312.5/320. nm). Satellite data from TOMS, OMI, GOME, and GOME-2 are used in the comparison. The three Microtops channels show a high correlation with the satellite retrievals. Channel I shows the best results and produces a mean bias deviation (MBD) less than 2.14% with respect to TOMS, OMI and GOME. The MBD increases to 3% in the comparison…

The objective of this research was to evaluate the modification of canopy architecture of ''Flordastar'' peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) grafted onto rootstocks with different vigour, by the use of fractal dimension (D). The hypothesis was that different vigour rootstocks are able to modify the complexity of the branching pattern and that this effect can be assessed by a geometric parameter such as the fractal dimension (D) of the 2D projection of tree branching structure.
