ABSTRACT We analyzed 24 beer strains from different origins by using PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of different gene regions, and six new Saccharomyces cerevisiae × Saccharomyces kudriavzevii hybrid strains were found. This is the first time that the presence in brewing of this new type of hybrid has been demonstrated. From the comparative molecular analysis of these natural hybrids with respect to those described in wines, it can be concluded that these originated from at least two hybridization events and that some brewing hybrids share a common origin with wine hybrids. Numerical Modelling of the Urban Climate

Three-dimensional numerical models of the urban climate have been developed in order to simulate climatic changes and air pollution in urban regions due to anthropogenic activities. Two versions are presented. Model A covers mesoscale γ and uses the roughness length to characterize surface structure. The microscale version B approximates the actual urban build-up by rectangular blocks. Model A results agree reasonably well with observations. For complex building structures, the microscale model must be applied. Model B results on neutral flow and pollutant transport within a particular building configuration are discussed.

We have utilized Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLP) in conjunction with chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequence data to study the genetic diversity in 53 accessions of Dioscorea dumetorum from six countries in West and Central Africa. Our results provide a comparison of the two marker systems with regards to their applicability to differentiate intraspecific genotypes and the grouping of the accessions based on localities of collection. A total of 1052 AFLP fragments (of which 94.1% were polymorphic) produced from twelve primer combinations indicate a relatively high level of polymorphism among the accessions. Some taxa of Sicilian Helichrysum related to sect. Stoeachadina have an uncertain systematic position; moreover, they are rare and endangered. In order to preserve these taxa in a genebank, a strategy to keep their genetic variation as high as possible is required. The high informative content of AFLP markers was used to assess genetic variations within and between populations and their relationships. Background: Little is known about the early predictors of need for care in late life. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether physical activity from midlife onward was associated with hospital and long-term care in the last year of life. Methods: We studied a decedent population of 846 persons aged 66–98 years at death, who, on average 5.8 years prior to death, had participated in an interview about their current and earlier physical activity. Data on the use of care in the last year of life are register-based data and complete. Four different colony morphologies were produced by Flavobacterium columnare strains on Shieh agar plate cultures: rhizoid and flat (type 1), non-rhizoid and hard (type 2), round and soft (type 3), and irregularly shaped and soft (type 4). Colonies produced on AO agar differed from these to some extent.
