1994
This article is an attempt of applying the conversational analysis to planned texts through a Caribbean work of the 18th. century called Historia de la conquista de la isla española de Santo Domingo. It has been tried to systematize in the conversational analysis a series of elements which characterize the spoken language. This language belongs to a written text which gathered the basic structures and patterns managed in the communicative fact by the speakers, through the intuition of the writer-speaker in which J. L. Peguero became, to transmit his message to his workers. This approach omits the barely socio-linguistical ana…
Teaching language and literature: A question of balance?
2015
Regarding the teaching of Catalan, four textbooks were created in the 1970s and 80s, which included a complete work of literature, with numerous grammar and lexical commentaries, and exercises about the literary text. The author who is the link between these books is the grammarian Albert Jané i Riera, a writer and linguist who has been a leading figure in Catalan culture as the editor of the children's magazine Cavall Fort. Our aim with this synchronic and diachronic study is to vindicate the importance of the educational proposals we have analysed, as well as the appropriateness and the need of teaching language and literature to regain and consolidate their mutually enriching relationshi…
Teaching evaluation vs. Quality evaluation
2002
A review is made on the instruments and dimensions that use the different Spanish universities to evaluate the professors from student’s ratings. Selecting repeated items, almost used in four or more universities, a new instrument has been created and validated with 334 students of the University of A Coruña. Results are analysed.
Tangibot: A collaborative multiplayer game for pediatric patients
2019
[EN] Background Previous research has studied the effects of games in pediatric wards, but none of it has focused on the impact of the hospital¿s school staff on the psychosocial state of the children nor on the gameplay itself. Objectives To present the Tangibot application and evaluate its impact on the children¿s psychosocial state in the short term and the impact of the teacher on their psychosocial state, communications and coordination during the activity. Methods A study was conducted in a hospital classroom with 20 participants, who participated twice in the game: one with the teacher playing along and another without her. An observational scale was used by two evaluators in order t…
Subjective and objective sleep quality in elderly individuals: The role of psychogeriatric evaluation
2018
[EN] Aging affects sleep and sleep problems are common in older individuals. However, the relationship between objective and subjective tools for analysing sleep and psycho-geriatric variables have not been tested in institutionalised older individuals. This work analyses sleep quality by using actigraphy as an objective tool and validates the Athens and Oviedo sleep questionnaires in octogenarian elderly individuals as subjective scales of sleep perception. All patients wore an actigraph device for one week and then completed the Athens and Oviedo clinical sleep-evaluation questionnaires. Morning cortisol levels in blood plasma and saliva samples were also measured to assess the associatio…
Minimising value-at-risk in a portfolio optimisation problem using a multi-objective genetic algorithm
2011
[EN] In this paper, we develop a general framework for market risk optimisation that focuses on VaR. The reason for this choice is the complexity and problems associated with risk return optimisation (non-convex and non-differential objective function). Our purpose is to obtain VaR efficient frontiers using a multi-objective genetic algorithm (GA) and to show the potential utility of the algorithm to obtain efficient portfolios when the risk measure does not allow calculating an optimal solution. Furthermore, we measure differences between VaR efficient frontiers and variance efficient frontiers in VaR-return space and we evaluate out-sample capacity of portfolios on both bullish and bearis…
2007
Alternating the verbal tenses in the past in written texts demands to take into account differences in aspects not frequently seen in spoken Spanish. According to López García (2005: 162) the system of five simple tenses (vengo, venía, vine, vendría, vendré) covers the expressive needs of the Spanish speakers, although children use less than adult speakers who rarely employ other forms. Problems come up when instead of speaking Spanish, we need to write it and read it. This necessity changes the range of verbal tenses completely, since it is essential for articulating a text, to clarify plainly that some events happen before or after others, in other words, secondary indexes of reference ar…
