Impact of contact lens material and design on the ocular surface.

2018

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact on the ocular surface of a daily disposable hydrogel contact lens with high water content compared with two silicone hydrogel daily disposable lenses of lower water content. METHODS: The hydrogel lens assessed was made from nesofilcon A and the silicone hydrogel lenses were made of delefilcon A and stenfilcon A. Contact lens thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters such as tear film osmolarity, tear meniscus area and central corneal thickness were also assessed. Optical quality was analysed for all cases by means of wavefront aberrometry. RESULTS: The nesofilcon A was shown to be the thinnest lens…

Seasonal periodicity of growth and composition in valves of Diplodon chilensis patagonicus (d'Orbigny, 1835)

2008

Freshwater mussels of the genus Diplodon (Unionida) are common inhabitants of lakes and rivers in South America, and have slow growth and long life spans. We established the annual periodicity of incremental shell growth in Diplodon chilensis patagonicus (d'Orbigny, 1835) and calculated growth rates at different ages, using internal ring counting supported by dyeing methods and δ 18 O isotope analyses, in two Patagonian populations (Lago Steffen and its effluent Rio Manso Inferior, Argentina). Longevities of ca. 90 years (Lago Steffen) significantly extend the life spans reported in the past. Growth rates for old individuals (>30 years) from both lake and river populations average 0.16 mm p…

Light transmission and ultraviolet protection of contact lenses under artificial illumination

2016

Purpose: To determine the spectral transmission of contact lenses (CLs), with and without an ultraviolet (UV) filter to evaluate their capacity for protection under UV radiation from artificial illumination (incandescent, fluorescent, xenon (Xe) lamps, or white LEDs (light-emitting diode)). Methods: The transmission curves of nine soft CLs were obtained by using a PerkinElmer Lambda 35 UV-vis spectrophotometer. A CIE standard was used for the emission spectra of incandescent and fluorescent lamps, and Xe lamps and white LEDs were measured by using an International Light Technologies ILT-950 spectroradiometer. Results: Five of the nine soft CLs analysed state that they incorporate UV filters…

Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil ofAnethum graveolensAerial Parts

2014

Abstract:The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation method from the aerial parts of Anethum graveolens were analysed by GC-MS. Twelve compounds constituting 96.8 % of the oil were identified. The main compounds were α-phellandrene (31.8 %), apiole (15.3 %), dill ether (13.2 %), limonene (11.8 %), geraniol (10.6 %) and pcymene (5.3 %). The chemical composition of the oil was found to be similar as reported from India and abroad, however there was a considerable quantitative variation among the major compounds identified.

Transitivity prominence within and across modalities

2020

The idea of transitivity as a scalar phenomenon is well known (e.g., Hopper & Thompson 1980; Tsunoda 1985; Haspelmath 2015). However, as with most areas of linguistic study, it has been almost exclusively studied with a focus on spoken languages. A rare exception to this is Kimmelman (2016), who investigates transitivity in Russian Sign Language (RSL) on the basis of corpus data. Kimmelman attempts to establish a transitivity prominence hierarchy of RSL verbs, and compares this ranking to the verb meanings found in the ValPal database (Hartmann, Haspelmath & Bradley 2013). He arrives at the conclusion that using the frequency of overt objects in corpus data is a successful measure o…

Ambivalent English : What We Talk About When We Think We Talk About Language

2020

The ambivalence of English manifests itself in the discourses that surround it. English may be a resource and consume resources; it empowers and oppresses. The dichotomous discussion around the usefulness or dangers of English as a “global” or “world” language erases problematizations of the layered societal implications of English in localised contexts. English needs to be analysed not (only) as a language but (also) as the ideologies and societal structures intertwined with it. We examine English in two higher education contexts. Our first case deals with the so-called Accent Reduction courses offered for international students in US universities. The second one analyses English as a lang…

The major allergen of the Parietaria pollen contains an LPS-binding region with immuno-modulatory activity

2013

Background The major allergens in Parietaria pollen, Par j 1 and Par j 2, have been identified as lipid transfer proteins. The family of the Par j 1 allergens is composed of two isoforms, which differ by the presence of a 37 amino acid peptide (Par37) exclusive to the Par j 1.0101 isoform. The goal of this study was to elucidate the biological properties of the Par37 peptide. Methods In silico analysis, spectrofluorimetric experiments and in vitro cell culture assays were used to identify the biological properties of Par37. In addition, a mouse model of sensitization was used to study the influence of Par37 in the murine immune response. Results In silico analysis predicted that Par37 displ…

Coprology of Panthera tigris altaica and Felis bengalensis euptilurus from the Russian Far East

2007

Fecal samples from the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) and the Amur cat (Felis bengalensis euptilurus) from Far Eastern Russia, were examined for parasites. A natural sedimentation methodology was used and a complete examination of all the sediment was performed. This fecal investigation allowed us to isolate and identify several developmental stages of gastrointestinal, hepatic, and respiratory parasites. Five parasites were found from P. t. altaica: 11 trematodes (Platynosomum fastosum) and 4 nematodes (Strongyloides sp., Ancylostomatidae, Toxascaris leonina, and Toxocara cati). Five parasites were found from F. b. euptilurus: 1 cestode (Diplopylidium sp.) and 4 nematodes (Trichu…
