2012

Purpose To evaluate the optical quality of Acrysof Restor SN6AD1 refractive–diffractive +3.00 D and Lentis Mplus LS-312 nonrotational symmetric +3.00 D aspheric multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and analyze the effect of tilt and decentration. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, and University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods An artificial model eye was used to measure wavefront aberrations of both IOL models. The modulation transfer function (MTF) and point-spread function (PSF) were calculated for a 5.0 mm pupil and under 5 situations: centered, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm decentered, and 2 degrees and 4 degrees tilted. Results The refractive–diffractive IOL had…

Physical compensation of phase curvature in digital holographic microscopy by use of programmable liquid lens.

2015

Quantitative phase measurements obtained with digital holographic microscopes are strongly dependent on the optical arrangement of the imaging system. The nontelecentric operation provides phase measurements affected by a parabolic phase factor and requires numerical postprocessing, which does not always remove all the perturbation. Accurate phase measurements are achieved by using the imaging system in telecentric mode. Unfortunately, this condition is not accomplished when a commercial microscope is used as the imaging system. In this paper, we present an approach for obtaining accurate phase measurements in nontelecentric imaging systems without the need for numerical postprocessing. The…

Tolerance to rotation of toric monofocal and bifocal intraocular lenses. A theoretical study

2018

Abstract This manuscript aims to evaluate the tolerance to rotation of a toric monofocal and a toric bifocal intraocular lenses with different cylinder powers. Theoretical designs based on wavefront aberrations were created to simulate a toric monofocal and a toric bifocal intraocular lens. Cylinder power ranged from −1 D to −6 D, in steps of −1 D. Tolerance to rotation was estimated by the visual Strehl ratio based on the optical transfer function (VSOTF) metric. Tolerance to rotation for both monofocal and bifocal intraocular lenses decreased when the cylinder power increased. For the bifocal design studied, the tolerance to rotation was larger for the near focus than for the far, however…

Gaussian quadrature rule for arbitrary weight function and interval

2005

Abstract A program for calculating abscissas and weights of Gaussian quadrature rules for arbitrary weight functions and intervals is reported. The program is written in Mathematica. The only requirement is that the moments of the weight function can be evaluated analytically in Mathematica. The result is a FORTRAN subroutine ready to be utilized for quadrature. Intraspecific biodiversity and 'spoilage potential' of Brettanomyces bruxellensis in Apulian wines

2015

Abstract The yeast Brettanomyces bruxellensis, generally considered the main oenological spoilage microbe, is able to survive during the winemaking process and it confers off-odors to wine, in reason of its ability to produce considerable amounts of volatile phenols. Forty-eight isolates of B. bruxellensis, obtained from several wines collected in Apulia (Southern Italy), were genetically characterized using an integrated approach, including a strain biodiversity analysis by Sau-PCR. Furthermore, the production of volatile phenols was assessed in wine and in synthetic medium, confirming the oenological spoilage potential of the analysed strains. Our findings indicate a remarkable genetic va…

A review of Devenir Soi by Jacques Attali: through the lenses of liberalism and Buddhism

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reinterpret Attali’s worldview through the lenses of liberalism and Buddhism by mobilizing the relevant literature, beyond the mere book review. This paper is an essay based on the book “Devenir Soi” by Jacques Attali, published in France in 2014. These analytical grids were chosen, because freedom and self-realization are two themes that pervade the book. Design/methodology/approach – After presenting the book structure, the objective and the methodological approach, we uncover Attali’s interrogation, namely how to free oneself from the omnipresence of evil, the withering away of the State and growing xenophobic populist self-entitlement. We make …

Standardization of sperm motility analysis by using CASA-Mot for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and Siberian sturgeo…

2019

[EN] It is essential to define an optimized standard method to assess the fish sperm quality to minimize the differences between the results obtained by different laboratories. Only this optimization and standardization can make them useful from academia to industry. This study presents the validation of sperm motility assessment using a CASA-Mot system for three endangered diadromous fish species: European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii). To attain this goal, different technical and data processing methods were tested: 1) magnification lens (×10 and ×20), 2) Spermtrack® reusable chambers (10 and 20¿¿m depth) and 3) different f…

Multispectral Imaging using a Stereo Camera: Concept, Design and Assessment

2011

This paper proposes a one-shot six-channel multispectral color image acquisition system using a stereo camera and a pair of optical filters. The two filters from the best pair selected from among readily available filters such that they modify the sensitivities of the two cameras in such a way that they produce optimal estimation of spectral reflectance and/or color are placed in front of the two lenses of the stereo camera. The two images acquired from the stereo camera are then registered for pixel-to-pixel correspondence. The spectral reflectance and/or color at each pixel on the scene are estimated from the corresponding camera outputs in the two images. Both simulations and experiments…

Interface engineering for improved light transmittance through photonic crystal flat lenses

2010

In this paper, we present photonic crystal flat lenses with interfaces engineered to improve the light transmittance thanks to a broad angles impedance matching. The interface engineering consists in the realization of antireflection gratings on the edges of the lenses which are designed to reduce the propagative waves reflectivity over a wide range of incident angles. The fabricated structures were measured in optical near-field and a four times enhancement of the light transmission efficiency is reported.

Analysis of the angular acceptance of surface plasmon Bragg mirrors

2007

International audience; We analyze an important aspect of the behavior of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) Bragg mirrors: the dependence of the angular acceptance for reflection on the incidence angle. By means of leakage radiation microscopy, both in direct and Fourier space, we observe that the angular acceptance diminishes for increasing incidence angles. This effect, which can considerably affect the design of devices based on these elements, is shown to be the consequence of the decrease of the bandgap width with increasing incidence angle.
