Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty for Corneal Decompensation Secondary to Phakic Intraocular Lenses

2019

Purpose. To describe the surgical technique and clinical outcomes of bilensectomy (pIOL explant and phacoemulsification), followed by DMEK performed for bullous keratopathy secondary to pIOL.Methods. Seven eyes of seven patients, who developed corneal decompensation after pIOL implantation, underwent bilensectomy followed by DMEK in a two-step procedure. Main outcome measures included uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refraction, endothelial cell density (ECD) at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, and intraoperative and postoperative complications.Results. DMEK was performed at a mean time of 9.83 ± 8.23 months after bilensectomy. BCVA (log MAR) improved in all …

Impact of the pupil size – central optical zone diameter relationship on visual performance in aspheric multifocal contact lenses

2020

Abstract Purpose To determine the impact of different central optical zone diameters (COZDs), obtained from pupil size, on the visual performance of presbyopic subjects fitted with centre-distance simultaneous-image multifocal contact lenses (SIMCLs). Methods Thirty-two presbyopic volunteers, between 45–58 years of age, participated in this prospective, controlled, double-blind study. Subjects were fitted with 5 centre-distance SIMCLs of variable COZD, determined from the measurement of pupil size under photopic light conditions and corresponding to 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 % of pupil diameter. Subjects visual performance was evaluated through the measurement of distance, intermediate and nea…

Reading ability with 3 multifocal intraocular lens models.

2006

Purpose To prospectively evaluate reading performance with of 3 types of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) under different lighting conditions based on reading acuity and reading speed tests. Setting Augenklinik, Bad Hersfeld, Germany. Methods This randomized study comprised 60 cataract patients (120 eyes) randomly assigned to receive an SA40N IOL (AMO) (Group 1, 20 patients), Tecnis ZM001 IOL (AMO) (Group 2, 20 patients), or AcrySof ReSTOR SA60D3 IOL (Alcon) (Group 3, 20 patients). Pupil size and reading ability at near (visual acuity, reading speed) without correction, with best distance correction, and with best near correction were assessed 6 weeks postoperatively under low-light con…

The Impact on Vision of Aspheric to Spherical Monofocal Intraocular Lenses in Cataract Surgery

2013

Purpose To provide a summary of the impact on vision of an aspheric intraocular lens (IOL) compared with a spherical IOL in cataract surgery. Design Systematic review with meta-analysis. Participants Patients from published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of cataract surgery with aspheric compared with spherical monofocal IOL implantation. Methods We systematically searched the peer-reviewed literature in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, BIOSIS, and the Cochrane Library according to the Cochrane Collaboration method to identify relevant RCTs. The inclusion criteria were RCTs on cataract surgery comparing the use of aspheric versus spherical IOL implantation that assessed visual acuity, …

Benefits and Side Effects of Bandage Soft Contact Lens Application after LASIK

2005

Purpose To evaluate benefits and side effects of bandage soft contact lens (BSCL) insertion after LASIK in relation to patients’ characteristics. Design Prospective, randomized, bicenter comparative investigational trial. Participants One hundred patients (200 eyes) with myopia and/or myopic astigmatism. Methods Each patient underwent consecutive (Marburg, Germany) or simultaneous (Mainz, Germany) bilateral LASIK. At the end of the procedure, the first treated eye received a drop of ofloxacin and dexamethasone, patch, and transparent protective shield for 2 to 4 hours. The fellow eye received in addition a BSCL, soaked in the same eyedrops for 20 to 24 hours. Main Outcome Measures Schirmer …

Komplikationen einer großen kongenitalen Ziliarkörperzyste

2002

Background Multiple cysts of iris and ciliary body may cause many complications such as acute or chronic angle closure glaucoma. Patient We present a boy with multiple congenital cysts of the iris pigment epithelium and a voluminous cyst of the unpigmented ciliary body epithelium of the right eye. This resulted in lenticular astigmatism, concomitant strabismus divergens and subsequently to anisometropia. The voluminous cyst (8 x 12 mm in diameter) was folded around the lens, reached the optic axis and resulted in displacement of the lens and contact between the iris and the corneal endothelium from 6.30 to 11. After puncture and partial resection of the cyst at the age of 8 months the boy d…

Past and present work practices of European interventional cardiologists in the context of radiation protection of the eye lens—results of the EURALO…

2018

International audience; This paper investigates over five decades of work practices in interventional cardiology, with an emphasis on radiation protection. The analysis is based on data from more than 400 cardiologists from various European countries recruited for a EURALOC study and collected in the period from 2014 to 2016. Information on the types of procedures performed and their annual mean number, fluoroscopy time, access site choice, x-ray units and radiation protection means used was collected using an occupational questionnaire. Based on the specific European data, changes in each parameter have been analysed over decades, while country-specific data analysis has allowed us to dete…

Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy of the inferior vena cava and iliac veins with the use of Aspirex®S device in a paediatric patient

2017

Phlegmasia cerulea dolens, which is the most severe clinical presentation of deep venous thrombosis and results from an almost complete occlusion of the major and collateral venous outflow routes from the extremity, is very rarely seen in children. Here we describe the treatment of an 11-year-old boy with Down syndrome who presented with thrombotic occlusion of the inferior vena cava and both iliac veins. We present a step-by-step technique of endovascular mechanical thrombectomy of these veins with the use of the Aspirex®S thrombectomy device. Endovascular treatment was followed by local intravenous thrombolysis. Because of recurrent thrombosis, which occurred 4 days later, endovascular th…

Postoperative Lens Position Preoperatively Determined by Scheimpflug Photography

1999

The position of the artificial lens has an important influence on refractive power calculation. We compared the position of the crystalline lens with that of the artificial lens after cataract surgery by means of Scheimpflug photography. A difference in position of approximately 0.8 mm in the anterior direction could be determined.
