Beginning from the early days of mass immigration (1890s), Italian immigrants were increasingly depicted in association with crime, especially organized crime, in the mainstream press. This article analyses the specific contribution of Gender Studies and their underlying epistemology to the study of Greek texts. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the clarification of the origin, the use and the definition of ‘gender’. Gender Studies approach is than analysed in relation to social history, rituals and myth, literary texts, biology, medicine and sexuality, botany and practices of magic, philosophy, art and archaeology. In conclusions, if ideology is abandoned, gender can still be a valid heuristic tool in reconstructing of Greek society.
