International Bioethics Committees: Conditions for a Good Deliberation

2016

One of the most relevant effects of bioethics emergence has been the spread of deliberative bodies on bioethics matters. Their features are very wide, depending upon the entity that creates them, their regional scope, the issues they deal with, the ruling strength of their agreements, etc. Among them, international bioethics committees are particularly relevant due to the huge impact of their work on global public opinion, as well as on the policies approved by governments all around the world. These bodies are presumed to adopt their decisions, as well as the other bioethics committees, after deliberating on facts and values (Gracia 2001).

Recensione a John R. Searle, La mente, Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano, 2005

2005

What Do We Know About the Second Moment of Financial Markets?

2021

Recent research shows that the vast majority of scientific studies published in leading finance journals fails scientific replication (Hou, Xue, and Zhang, 2020; Harvey, Liu, and Zhu; 2016). This study argues that p-hacking, publication pressure and the selection bias from leading finance journals are perhaps not the underlying root cause for this issue. We show that standard methodologies often used in finance research are inevitably sample-specific due to the very nature of financial markets. While the consensus of earlier research postulates a rejection of the time-honored Levy hypothesis, our results strongly indicate that the variance of variance does not exist in any of the financial …

Moran on Self-Knowledge, Agency and Responsibility

2006

SUMMARY : In this paper I deal with Richard Moran’s account of self-knowledgein his book Authority and Estrangement . After presenting the main lines of hisaccount, I contend that, in spite of its novelty and interest, it may have someshortcomings. Concerning beliefs formed through deliberation, the account wouldseem to face problems of circularity or regress. And it looks also wanting concerningbeliefs not formed in this way. I go on to suggest a diagnosis of these problems, according to which they would arise out of a view of agents too strongly dependenton the will.
