New Insights of Oral Colonic Drug Delivery Systems for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Therapy

2020

[EN] Colonic Drug Delivery Systems (CDDS) are especially advantageous for local treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Site-targeted drug release allows to obtain a high drug concentration in injured tissues and less systemic adverse effects, as consequence of less/null drug absorption in small intestine. This review focused on the reported contributions in the last four years to improve the effectiveness of treatments of inflammatory bowel diseases. The work concludes that there has been an increase in the development of CDDS in which pH, specific enzymes, reactive oxygen species (ROS), or a combination of all of these triggers the release. These delivery systems demonstrated a th…

El papel de las emociones y la literatura en la deliberación pública: la figura del <em>equlibrio perceptivo</em> de Martha C. Nussbaum

2015

This article argues that literature can play a key role in the processes of ethical deliberation; therefore it can be regarded as an extremely useful tool to justify public decision-making. In order to support this thesis I examine Nussbaum’s proposal of perceptive equilibrium as a method to conduct the public deliberation processes which integrates the emotions in its structure. Finally, I analyse one of the possible applications of the proposed method: introducing narrative texts, both historical and fictional, in the curricula as a method for ethical deliberation.

Designing Deliberation Systems

2010

In a liberal democracy, the evolution of political agendas and formation of policy involves deliberation: serious consideration of political issues.  Modern day political participation is dependent on widespread deliberation supported by information and communication technologies, which also offer the potential to revitalize and transform citizen engagement in democracy.  Although the majority of web 2.0 systems enable these discourses to some extent, government institutions commission and manage specialized deliberation systems (information systems designed to support participative discourse) intended to promote citizen engagement.  The most common examples of these are political discussio…

Globalización, valores sociales y choque de civilizaciones

2005

The thesis of the supposed clash of the Islamic and the western civilizations is, by far, the most diffused and debated of all the subjects and proposals dealt Huntington in his book <i>The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order</i>, above all after the terrorist attacks of the September 11th. The results of the World Social Survey 2000-2001 directed by Inglehart, are used in the present article to test the thesis of the cultural differences in a wide sample of Western Christian and Islamic societies. The comparative analysis undertaken allows to conclude that the cultural differences between both group societies are quite important, althou…

Inhalable nano into micro dry powders for ivacaftor delivery: The role of mannitol and cysteamine as mucus-active agents.

2020

In this paper the innovative approach of Nano into micro (NiM9 was developed to produce Nanoparticles loaded Ivacaftor to incorporate into mannitol or mannitol/cysteamine micromatrices for drug pulmonary administration in CF. Nanoparticles composed by a mixture of two polyhydrohydroxyethtylaspartamide copolymers containing a loading of Ivacaftor of 15.5 % w/w were produced. These Nanoparticles were incorporated into microparticles to obtain NiM that were characterized in terms of size and size distribution, interaction with CF-AM by rheological and turbidimetric studies as well as by aerodynamic diameter measurements. Finally the activity of Ivacaftor into these NiM was evaluated by in vitr…

Democratic Meta-Deliberation: Towards Reflective Institutional Design

2014

Theories of deliberative democracy are popular for their promise that in a deliberative polity, democracy can realise both participatory politics and rational policies. However, they are also confronted with the allegation that by qualifying essentially non-democratic practices as deliberative, they inadvertently (or not) become accomplices in the trend towards post-democratic governance. A central example of such a development is the rise of non-majoritarian bodies to which governments delegate decision making, thereby de-politicising conflicts and turning democratic discourses into technocratic ones. This article adopts a systemic perspective on deliberative democracy, asking whether non-…

E-Democracy and Public Online Budgeting

2014

If social media are to reinforce sustainability of political decisions their design has conceptually to take into account the implications of deliberative democracy, which stresses the active co-operation of virtually all citizens of a democracy for the purposes of participatory involvement. Essential to deliberative e-democracy is therefore a technologically supported comprehensive discourse about political subjects which is also called Deliberation. Theoretical implications of Deliberation are discussed from the angle of political science and social psychology. Finally, the practical implications of Deliberation rooted in social media are exemplified by an online citizen involvement for t…

Halloysite nanotubes for efficient loading, stabilization and controlled release of insulin

2018

Hypothesis: Oral insulin administration is not actually effective due to insulin rapid degradation, inactivation and digestion by proteolytic enzymes which results in low bioavailability. Moreover insulin is poorly permeable and lack of lipophilicity. These limits can be overcome by the loading of protein in some nanostructured carrier such as halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). Experiments: Herein we propose an easy strategy to obtain HNT hybrid materials for the delivery of insulin. We report a detailed description on the thermal behavior and stability of insulin loaded and released from the HNTs hybrid by the combination of several techniques. Findings: Release experiments of insulin from the H…
