Production of (anti-)He-3 and (anti-)H-3 in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

2020

The transverse momentum (p(T)) differential yields of (anti-)He-3 and (anti-)H-3 measured in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. The ratios of the p(T)-integrated yields of (anti-)He-3 and (anti-)H-3 to the proton yields are reported, as well as the pT dependence of the coalescence parameters B-3 for (anti-)He-3 and (anti-)H-3. For (anti-)He-3, the results obtained in four classes of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density are also discussed. These results are compared to predictions from a canonical statistical hadronization model and coalescence approaches. An upper limit on the total yield of (4)(He) over bar is determine…

La migración femenina, el trabajo doméstico asalariado y la violación de los derechos humanos

2015

The feminization of migrations, especially in the Mediterranean countries of Europe, is associated with new forms of exploitation of migrant labor. This article aims to analyze from this point of view the market of domestic and care work of migrant women in the homes of Italian families, placing it in relation to the deficiencies of national social policies. The analysis of this phenomenon in the Italian context - developed with the support of a series of interviews with migrant workers - reveals about these women and their families of origin the violation of certain fundamental human rights : primarily the right to the family unity, bound by the rules of family reunification, by the cohabi…

Anglicisms and Italian Equivalents in the Era of Covid-19: A Corpus-Based Study of Lockdown

2020

The whole globe has been going through an unprecedented historical moment since World War II. COVID-19, the disease against which we have all been trying to defend ourselves for several months now, has spread worldwide with a significant impact in all spheres of life. With the pandemic outburst and English the language of globalization, several Anglicisms have entered the lexicon of other languages, especially Italian, traditionally open to foreign words. COVID-19-related Anglicisms are used in Italian to such an extent that we can reasonably refer to them as the ‘language of pandemic’. The English words and expressions employed in Italian to refer to the current disease are numerous. Some …

Apoptotic-like Leishmania exploit the host´s autophagy machinery to reduce T-cell-mediated parasite elimination

2015

Apoptosis is a well-defined cellular process in which a cell dies, characterized by cell shrinkage and DNA fragmentation. In parasites like Leishmania, the process of apoptosis-like cell death has been described. Moreover upon infection, the apoptotic-like population is essential for disease development, in part by silencing host phagocytes. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of how apoptosis in unicellular organisms may support infectivity remains unclear. Therefore we investigated the fate of apoptotic-like Leishmania parasites in human host macrophages. Our data showed--in contrast to viable parasites--that apoptotic-like parasites enter an LC3(+), autophagy-like compartment. The compartm…

The Interaction Mechanism of Intrinsically Disordered PP2A Inhibitor Proteins ARPP-16 and ARPP-19 With PP2A

2021

Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) activity is critical for maintaining normal physiological cellular functions. PP2A is inhibited by endogenous inhibitor proteins in several pathological conditions including cancer. A PP2A inhibitor protein, ARPP-19, has recently been connected to several human cancer types. Accordingly, the knowledge about ARPP-19—PP2A inhibition mechanism is crucial for the understanding the disease development and the therapeutic targeting of ARPP-19—PP2A. Here, we show the first structural characterization of ARPP-19, and its splice variant ARPP-16 using NMR spectroscopy, and SAXS. The results reveal that both ARPP proteins are intrinsically disordered but contain transient…

Modelling Without a Modelling Language

2018

Developments in computer hardware and programming languages, in this case C++, have made it feasible to write models of concurrent systems under verification in the programming language, instead of some established modelling language such as Promela. While this does not reduce the usefulness of modelling languages, it offers new possibilities that may be advantageous, for instance, when teaching state space ideas to newcomers or when experimenting with new scientific ideas. In earlier work, we were able to express everything else fairly naturally in C++, except the set of transitions. The present study uses C++ lambda functions to represent naturally transitions that consist of a tail state…

Gene expression patterns associated with caste and reproductive status in ants: worker-specific genes are more derived than queen-specific ones.

2013

Variation in gene expression leads to phenotypic diversity and plays a central role in caste differentiation of eusocial insect species. In social Hymenoptera, females with the same genetic background can develop into queens or workers, which are characterized by divergent morphologies, behaviours and lifespan. Moreover, many social insects exhibit behaviourally distinct worker castes, such as brood-tenders and foragers. Researchers have just started to explore which genes are differentially expressed to achieve this remarkable phenotypic plasticity. Although the queen is normally the only reproductive individual in the nest, following her removal, young brood-tending workers often develop …

Access to Justice or Access to States Courtss Justice in Europe? The Directive 2008/52/EC on Civil and Commercial Mediation

2013

Modern societies are very much linked to the idea of litigation. A hidden rule seems to exist in the sense that the more advanced a society is the highest level of litigation it suffers. This increase in the level of litigation amounts to a sort of “litigation explosion” that has traditionally been linked to State courts. This explosion is said to put the whole judiciary system under pressure in so far the volume of disputes brought before State courts increases, the proceedings become more and more lengthy and the costs incurred in such proceedings also augment. The goal to tackle this explosion underpins most of the reforms that modern national civil procedure laws have suffered in many c…
