New evidence for the multiplicity of ubiquinone- and inhibitor-binding sites in the mitochondrial complex I.

2000

Determination of the number of ubiquinone- and inhibitor-binding sites in the mitochondrial complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) is a controversial question with a direct implication for elaborating a suitable model to explain the bioenergetic mechanism of this complicated enzyme. We have used combinations of both selective inhibitors and common ubiquinone-like substrates to demonstrate the multiplicity of the reaction centers in the complex I in contrast with competition studies that have suggested the existence of a unique binding site for ubiquinone. Our results provide new evidence for the existence of at least two freely exchangeable ubiquinone-binding sites with different specif…

Effects of artificial plant cover on plant colonization of a bare peat surface

1992

. This paper describes the effect of artificial plant cover on plant colonization of a bare peat surface, resulting from peat harvesting. Plant species colonization was compared on plots supplied with plastic models simulating Vaccinium vitis-idaea plants and plots without this artificial cover. After two growing seasons, species composition and total biomass of the established plant cover were similar in the two plot types. However, the number of established seedlings in the plots with artificial cover was significantly higher than that in the plots without cover. Out of 13 species observed four differed significantly in their performance on the two plot types. Betula spec. had both higher…

Predatory Open-Access Publishing in Anesthesiology.

2018

Predatory publishing is an exploitative fraudulent open-access publishing model that applies charges under the pretense of legitimate publishing operations without actually providing the editorial services associated with legitimate journals. The aim of this study was to analyze this phenomenon in the field of anesthesiology and related specialties (intensive care, critical and respiratory medicine, pain medicine, and emergency care). Two authors independently surveyed a freely accessible, constantly updated version of the original Beall lists of potential, possible, or probable predatory publishers and standalone journals. We identified 212 journals from 83 publishers, and the total number…

Activation of cGMP-dependent Protein Kinase Iβ Inhibits Interleukin 2 Release and Proliferation of T Cell Receptor-stimulated Human Peripheral T Cells

2000

Several major functions of type I cGMP-dependent protein kinase (cGK I) have been established in smooth muscle cells, platelets, endothelial cells, and cardiac myocytes. Here we demonstrate that cGK Ibeta is endogenously expressed in freshly purified human peripheral blood T lymphocytes and inhibits their proliferation and interleukin 2 release. Incubation of human T cells with the NO donor, sodium nitroprusside, or the membrane-permeant cGMP analogs PET-cGMP and 8-pCPT-cGMP, activated cGK I and produced (i) a distinct pattern of phosphorylation of vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein, (ii) stimulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases ERK1/2 and p38 kinase, and, upon anti-CD3 stimu…

Characterization of grapevine defense reactions and identification of elicitors : the endopolygalacturonase 1 from Botrytis cinerea, an avirulence fu…

2002

The fight against grapevine pathogens is mainly carried out by pesticides, the continued use of which is harmful to the environment and the health of users and consumers. The main organizations in charge of viticulture set as a priority the research and use of alternatives to chemical control. However, the genetic improvement of the vine is prohibited in AOC vineyards to preserve the varietal typicity, partly responsible for the quality of the wines. In addition, research undertaken some fifteen years ago reveals that plants have their own immune defenses, which they activate on contact with the microorganisms they recognize via molecules called elicitors. In this context, the objective of …

Special Splines of Exponential Type for the Solutions of Mass Transfer Problems in Multilayer Domains

2016

We consider averaging methods for solving the 3-D boundary-value problem of second order in multilayer domain. The special hyperbolic and exponential type splines, with middle integral values of piece-wise smooth function interpolation are considered. With the help of these splines the problems of mathematical physics in 3-D with piece-wise coefficients are reduced with respect to one coordinate to 2-D problems. This procedure also allows to reduce the 2-D problems to 1-D problems and the solution of the approximated problemsa can be obtained analytically. In the case of constant piece-wise coefficients we obtain the exact discrete approximation of a steady-state 1-D boundary-value problem.…

Extensive transcriptional complexity during hypoxia-regulated expression of the myoglobin gene in cancer.

2013

Recently, the ectopic expression of myoglobin (MB) was reported in human epithelial cancer cell lines and breast tumor tissues, where MB expression increased with hypoxia. The better prognosis of MB-positive breast cancer patients suggested that the globin exerts a tumor-suppressive role, possibly by impairing mitochondrial activity in hypoxic breast carcinoma cells. To better understand MB gene regulation in cancer, we systematically investigated the architecture of the human MB gene, its transcripts and promoters. In silico analysis of transcriptome data from normal human tissues and cancer cell lines, followed by RACE-PCR verification, revealed seven novel exons in the MB gene region, mo…
