Quantitative investigations on the human entorhinal area: left-right asymmetry and age-related changes
1994
The total nerve cell numbers in the right and in the left human entorhinal areas have been calculated by volume estimations with the Cavalieri principle and by cell density determinations with the optical disector. Thick gallocyanin-stained serial frozen sections through the parahippocampal gyrus of 22 human subjects (10 female, 12 male) ranging from 18 to 86 years were analysed. The laminar composition of gallocyanin (Nissl)-stained sections could easily be compared with Braak's (1972, 1980) pigmentoarchitectonic study, and Braak's nomenclature of the entorhinal laminas was adopted. Cell-sparse laminae dissecantes can more clearly be distinguished in Nissl than in aldehydefuchsin preparati…
Do Epigenetic Clocks Provide Explanations for Sex Differences in Life Span? A Cross-Sectional Twin Study
2022
Abstract Background The sex gap in life expectancy has been narrowing in Finland over the past 4–5 decades; however, on average, women still live longer than men. Epigenetic clocks are markers for biological aging which predict life span. In this study, we examined the mediating role of lifestyle factors on the association between sex and biological aging in younger and older adults. Methods Our sample consists of younger and older twins (21‒42 years, n = 1 477; 50‒76 years, n = 763) including 151 complete younger opposite-sex twin pairs (21‒30 years). Blood-based DNA methylation was used to compute epigenetic age acceleration by 4 epigenetic clocks as a measure of biological aging. Path mo…
Online Self-Help as an Add-On to Inpatient Psychotherapy: Efficacy of a New Blended Treatment Approach.
2017
<b><i>Background:</i></b> Depression is one of the most frequent and costly mental disorders. While there is increasing evidence for the efficacy of online self-help to improve depression or prevent relapse, there is little evidence in blended care settings, especially combined with inpatient face-to-face psychotherapy. Therefore, we evaluated whether an evidence-based online self-help program improves the efficacy of inpatient psychotherapy. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A total of 229 depressed patients were randomly allocated either to an online self-help program (intervention group [IG]; Deprexis) or an active control group (CG; weekly online inf…
Genetic and Environmental Effects on the Individual Variation and Continuity of Participation in Diverse Physical Activities
2021
INTRODUCTION Participation in diverse physical activities has beneficial health effects. However, little is known on how genetic and environmental factors affect this trait. Thus, we examined to what extent these factors explain participation in diverse leisure-time physical activities from late adolescence to adulthood using a twin study design. METHODS The participants were Finnish twins who reported their participation in diverse leisure-time physical activities at ages 17 (n = 5429) and 34 yr (n = 4246). The number of physical activities engaged in was analyzed using applications of structural linear modeling for twin data. RESULTS On average, the total number of physical activities eng…
Gender-related differences in psychometric properties of WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0
2019
Objective of this study was to investigate the gender-related differential item function of 12-item WHODAS 2.0 amongst patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. This was a cross-sectional survey study among 1,988 patients at a university Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine outpatient clinic. To assess DIF, WHODAS 2.0 items were dichotomized as `none’ rated by respondents as `0’ versus `any limitation’ rated as `1,2,3 or 4’. The item response theory analysis was used to define discrimination and difficulty parameters of a questionnaire. The probit logistic regression was used to test uniformity of DIF between gender groups. The results of DIF analysis were presented and evaluated graphica…
Surgical Anatomy of the Rectovaginal Space: Does a Standalone Rectovaginal Septum or Denonvilliers Fascia Exist in Women?
2021
Background Below the anterior peritoneal reflection, the anterior rectal wall and mesorectum are separated from the posterior vaginal wall by a virtual rectovaginal space. In this space, the description of a specific and independent rectovaginal septum as a female counterpart of Denonvilliers fascia has been the subject of debate over the years. Objective The aim of this study is to perform an accurate anatomical study of the rectovaginal area in a cadaveric simulation model of total mesorectal excision to evaluate the possible structures and the dissection planes contained within the rectovaginal space. Design and setting This is a cadaveric study performed at the University of Valencia. P…
An improvement of a bound of Green
2012
A p-group G of order pn (p prime, n ≥ 1) satisfies a classic Green's bound log p |M(G)| ≤ ½n(n - 1) on the order of the Schur multiplier M(G) of G. Ellis and Wiegold sharpened this restriction, proving that log p |M(G)| ≤ ½(d - 1)(n + m), where |G′| = pm(m ≥ 1) and d is the minimal number of generators of G. The first author has recently shown that log p |M(G)| ≤ ½(n + m - 2)(n - m - 1) + 1, improving not only Green's bound, but several other inequalities on |M(G)| in literature. Our main results deal with estimations with respect to the bound of Ellis and Wiegold.
An equivalent definition of the vector-valued McShane integral by means of partitions of unity
2002
An integral for vector-valued functions on a σ-finite outer regular quasi-radon measure space is defined by means of partitions of unity and it is shown that it is equivalent to the McShane integral. The multipliers for both the McShane and Pettis integrals are characterized
A presentation and a representation of the Held group
1996
In this note we give a brief description of a new presentation of the Held group, which is deduced only from the original work of D. Held in 1969, who shows that a finite simple group, having the same centralizer of a 2-central involution as in the Mathieu group M24, is M24, L5(2) or a group of order 4.030.387.200. The first complete uniqueness proof for the latter case was given by L. Soicher in 1991. The generators and relations occurring here are easy to verify by a simple Todd–Coxeter algorithm. It is an easy task to get a new uniqueness and existence proof of the Held group from this result. Also basic facts like the Schur Multiplier or the automorphism group of the Held group follow f…
SIGNAL PROCESSING ALGORITHM FOR SCHLIEREN EFFECT CORRECTION IN FLOW ANALYSIS
2001
Due to the radial refractive index gradients that sometimes develop in flow cells during the travelling of the samples through them, the absorbance records obtained in such conditions have a strange shape, particularly at low analyte levels. To correct this phenomenon, called Schlieren effect, a simple and reliable signal processing algorithm is described in correlation to the detector characteristics of noise. The algorithm is illustrated in nitrite and nitrate determinations with proflavin from more real samples. It has a solid theoretical support and involves the subtraction from the sample records of a smoothed signal, acquired by working with a blank solution.
