A coumarin based gold(i)-alkynyl complex: a new class of supramolecular hydrogelators.
2014
A phosphine-gold(I)-alkynyl-coumarin complex, [Au{7-(prop-2-ine-1-yloxy)-1-benzopyran-2-one}(DAPTA)] (1), was synthesized and the formation of long luminescent fibers in solution was characterized via fluorescence microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The fibers presented strong blue and green luminescence, suggesting that the gold(I) in the complex increased intersystem crossing due to the heavy atom effect, resulting in a significant increase in triplet emission. The X-ray structure of the fibers indicates that both aurophilic, π–π interactions and hydrogen bonding contribute to their formation in aqueous solvents.

Transmission of light in deep sea water at the site of the Antares neutrino telescope
2005
The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for …
Skin chromophore mapping from multi-spectral laser line images
2020
Skin chromophore maps can be used for assessment of various skin malformations and early cancer diagnostics. Commercially available devices are bulky and expensive. We present two portable proof-of-concept device prototypes for multi-spectral laser line imaging with three (448 nm, 532 nm and 659 nm) and four (450 nm, 523 nm, 638 nm and 850 nm) wavelength laser illumination. Laser modules and special optics that ensure uniform light distribution over the region of interest have been exploited. Skin chromophore maps were calculated using Beer-Lambert law, considering light scattering properties in the skin and including photon path length evaluated from the directly measured photon-time-of-fl…
Observation of light-by-light scattering in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector
2019
This Letter describes the observation of the light-by-light scattering process, γγ→γγ, in Pb+Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV. The analysis is conducted using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.73 nb−1, collected in November 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Light-by-light scattering candidates are selected in events with two photons produced exclusively, each with transverse energy EγT>3 GeV and pseudorapidity |ηγ|<2.4, diphoton invariant mass above 6 GeV, and small diphoton transverse momentum and acoplanarity. After applying all selection criteria, 59 candidate events are observed for a background expectation of 12±3 events. The observed excess of events…
Blue Moon: Is This a Property of Background Aerosol?
2010
Stellar extinction measurements made at three astronomical observatories showed that on ~50% of the nights the extinction due to aerosol light scattering increased rather than decreased with increasing wavelength (anomalous extinction) for wavelengths close to 500 nm. This extinction behavior is analyzed in this paper and limits are established for the aerosol characteristics necessary for this phenomenon to exist, including geometric standard deviations, imaginary part of refractive index, mean radius, and gaseous NO(2).
The ratio of primary scattering to total scattering of sky radiance
1974
Recently Eschelbach has computed from theory spectral radiance values for a turbid atmosphere taking into account the effect of multiple scattering. In the present work these computational data were used to investigate the ratio of primary to total scattering. This quotient is a measure of multiple scattering because of the relation: Total Scattering (TS) is equal to Primary Scattering (PS) plus Multiple Scattering (MS), i.e. PS/TS = 100 - MS/TS (%). It is discussed in which way multiple scattering in the solar almucantar depends on the solar elevation, turbidity, scattering angle, wavelength and albedo. The present work shows in which way multiple scattering is related to the optical thick…
Inverse task for evaluation of particle size distribution of polydisperse magnetic fluids
2010
AbstractThe method of inverse task was used to analyze three different physical phenomena. The particle size distributions were reconstructed from the magnetization curve, dynamic light scattering and magnetic birefringence relaxation data. The results thus obtained for one real magnetic fluid sample are different; they characterize the physical nature of the phenomena. All three methods may be used to determine intrinsic sample properties.
Brillouin light scattering study of Co$_{2}$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al and Co$_{2}$FeAl Heusler compounds
2008
The thermal magnonic spectra of Co$_{2}$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al (CCFA) and Co$_2$FeAl were investigated using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy (BLS). For CCFA, the exchange constant A (exchange stiffness D) is found to be 0.48 $\mu$erg/cm (203 meV A$^2$), while for Co$_2$FeAl the corresponding values of 1.55 $\mu$erg/cm (370 meV A$^2$) were found. The observed asymmetry in the BLS spectra between the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies was assigned to an interplay between the asymmetrical profiles of hybridized Damon-Esbach and perpendicular standing spin-wave modes, combined with the optical sensitivity of the BLS signal to the upper side of the CCFA or Co$_2$FeAl film.
Longitudinal versus transverse spheroidal vibrational modes of an elastic sphere
2005
Analysis of the spheroidal modes of vibration of a free elastic sphere show that they can be qualitatively grouped into two categories: primarily longitudinal and primarily transverse. This is not a sharp distinction. However, there is a relatively stark contrast between the two kinds of modes. Primarily transverse modes have a small divergence and have frequencies that are almost functionally independent of the longitudinal speed of sound. Analysis of inelastic light scattering intensity from confined acoustic phonons in nanoparticles requires an understanding of this qualitative distinction between different spheroidal modes. In addition, some common misconceptions about spheroidal modes …
