Single Particle Motion of Hard-Sphere-Like Polymer Micronetwork Colloids Up to the Colloid Glass Transition
1997
Polymer micronetwork spheres swollen in a good solvent can be regarded as colloids which require no special stabilisation to avoid aggregation. Their interactions can be timed by changing the degree of internal crosslinking. The phase behaviour and the static structure factor demonstrate that crosslink density of 1:10 (inverse number of monomer units between crosslinks) is sufficient to achieve hard sphere behaviour. We designed a host-tracer system consisting of core-shell micronetwork spheres (core: polystyrene; shell: poly-t-butylacrylate) in a host of refractive-indexmatched poly-t-butylacrylate micronetwork colloids. Employing a crosslink density of 1:10 and tuning the polydispersity s…
Dextran-Based Polycations: Thermodynamic Interaction with Water as Compared With Unsubstituted Dextran, 1 - Volumetric Properties and Light Scattering
2011
1991
Telechelic α,ω-macrozwitterions — narrowly distributed polystyrene chains oppositely charged at each end — were synthesized via anionic polymerization using direct functionalization with the initiator and the termination agent. The resulting products were purified (zwitterion content ≥ 0,95) and characterized with gel permeation chromatography, viscometry, static and dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering. In unpolar solvents as toluene, the polymeric zwitterions form clusters with molecular weights depending on concentration. In the dilute case, the clusters are relatively small and consist of approximately 8 zwitterions. The structure of these clusters is discussed by…
ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Novel Fluorous Cationic Amphiphiles with a 3,4-Dihydro-2(1H)-pyridone Spacer.
2011
Abstract The synthesis of fluorous (highly fluorinated) 3,4-dihydro-2(1 H )-pyridone-5-carboxylate cationic amphiphiles have been described, where the dihydropyridone serves as a spacer and either a pyridinium bromide or a triphenylphosphonium bromide form the polar cationic head group. The in water self-assembled aggregates have been observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS).

By means of data from critical demixing and vapour pressure measurements and by inverse gas chromatography, including the results of published light scattering measurments, a consistent picture is obtained for the entire dependence of the Flory-Huggins parameter χ on the weight fraction w2 of the polymer and on the temperature T for the system tert-butyl acetate/polystyrene. Within the entire T-range (ca. 0°C – 140°C), χ increases stronger than exponentially with w2, the rise being the larger the larger χH (the enthalpy contribution to χ) becomes in the limit of infinite dilution. At sufficiently high temperatures (≳ 50°C), χH changes its sign from negative to positive as w2 is raised. This…
Photo-Crosslinking of Copolymeric Methacrylates Bearing Stilbene Chromophores
2012
Radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (2) as major component and the methacrylates 1a or 1b, which contain an (E)-stilbene unit fixed by a tether to the ester group, yield easily soluble copolymers 3a, b. Whereas the dominant photoreactions in solution are (E)⇄Z) isomerizations and intra-chain [2π +2π] cycloadditions, cast films of 3a, b give an inter-chain photo-crosslinking on irradiation. Compared to homopolymers, the copolymers are not only better soluble and more easily processible, their films show less undesired light scattering. The cross-linked material is completely insoluble in organic solvents. Thus, it represents the basis for negative photoresists and the corresponding…

Oligonucleotides-decorated-poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) nanogels for gene delivery
2013
Pulsed electron-beam irradiation of a semi-dilute poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) aqueous solution in the presence of acrylic acid has led to a carboxyl functionalized nanogel system. Nanoparticles hydrodynamic size and surface charge density, in water and as a function of pH, were investigated by dynamic light scattering and laser doppler velocimetry, respectively. Nanogels (NGs) were proved not to be cytotoxic at the cellular level. Indeed, they rapidly bypass the cellular membrane to accumulate in specific cell portions of the cytoplasm, in the perinuclear area. The availability of pendant carboxyl groups on the crosslinked PVP NGs core prompted us to attempt their decoration with a sing…
Validation of a spectral light scattering method to differentiate large from small particles in intraocular lenses
2017
A psychophysical approach has been designed to measure straylight from intraocular lenses (IOLs) in vitro. This approach uses a clinical straylight meter (C-Quant) and an observer's eye as optical detector. Based on this, we introduced a method for study of straylight-wavelength dependency for IOLs. This dependency can be used to distinguish between 2 types of scattering particles (small and large) as defined by Mie theory. Validation was performed using a turbidity standard and scattering filters. Several IOLs were analyzed to identify potential scattering sources. Large particles were found to predominate in scattering from the studied lenses. This was confirmed by straylight-angular depe…
Color stimuli perception in presence of light scattering.
2006
Perception of different color contrast stimuli was studied in the presence of light scattering: in a fog chamber in Clermont-Ferrand and in laboratory conditions where light scattering of similar levels was obtained, using different light scattering eye occluders. Blue (shortest wavelength) light is scattered in fog to the greatest extent, causing deterioration of vision quality especially for the monochromatic blue stimuli. However, for the color stimuli presented on a white background, visual acuity in fog for blue Landolt-C optotypes was higher than for red and green optotypes on the white background. The luminance of color Landolt-C optotypes presented on a LCD screen was chosen corresp…
