Convection and thermodiffusion of colloidal gold tracers by laser light scattering

In a dynamic light scattering experiment, we have investigated the time intensity correlation function and the profile of the transmitted laser beam for organic dispersions of light absorbing colloidal particles containing tiny gold clusters. The correlation functions have been found to show a superposition of an exponential decay, corresponding to Brownian motion of the tracers, and well-defined oscillations. These oscillations are caused by convection due to local heating of the sample by the incident laser beam, which has been confirmed independently via measurements of the local temperature within the sample. Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Viscous Liquids: Relaxation Stretching of Single-Particle Probes

Spin-lattice relaxation rates R1(ω,T), probed via high-field and field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), are used to test the validity of frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) for the reorientation dynamics in viscous liquids. For several liquids, FTS is found to apply so that master curves can be generated. The susceptibility spectra are highly similar to those obtained from depolarized light scattering (DLS) and reveal an excess wing. Where FTS works, two approaches are suggested to access the susceptibility: (i) a plot of deuteron R1(T) vs the spin-spin relaxation rate R2(T) and (ii) a plot of R1(T) vs an independently measured reference time τref(T). Dynamic light scattering by preserved skimmed cow milk: A comparison of two-colour and three-dimensional cross-correlation experiments

We investigate the dynamic light scattering of preserved skimmed cow milk and compare the performance of a standard two-colour (2C) cross-correlation setup with the recently developed three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation setup. Undiluted milk could only be investigated using the 3D setup because of too low signal-to-noise ratio of the 2C setup. A tenfold diluted milk, however, could be investigated by both setups, and comparable results for the dynamics of the sample were obtained thus demonstrating the equivalence of the decorrelation schemes. Nanowire iron(III) coordination polymer based on 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine and chloride ligands

Abstract The neutral ligand 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (tp) has been employed to prepare a new coordination compound of Fe(III), [FeCl3(tp)2]n (1). Compound 1 was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction and found to be a coordination polymer forming a ladder structure based on metal–ligand interactions, while H-bonding and aromatic interactions contribute to the supramolecular self-assembly into a 3D nanostructured material. A method for quantification of the fine particle dose of lactose is described, using a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) method and evaporative light scattering detection. The HILIC method used an aminopropyl column and a mobile phase consisting of acetonitril/water (80/20, v/v) for isocratic elution. Sensitive chromatography was obtained using a low concentration of water in the extraction solvent. The detection limit (RSD10%) at an injection volume of 10 microL is 10 microg/mL. Linearity was obtained in the range of 10-80 microg/mL (R(2)0.99). A relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.5% (N=6) demonstrated good precision of the optimized method.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to prepare diclofenac/hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and diclofenac-loaded nanoparticles/HPMC films as potential systems for ocular delivery. Methods Two different concentration of the polymer were used: 1.5 and 2.0% w/v. Chitosan–hyaluronic acid nanoparticles were prepared by the ionotropic gelation technique. Nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, drug encapsulation efficiency and rheological studies. GdBO3 and YBO3 crystals under compression

High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies on nanocrystals of the GdBO3 and YBO3 rare-earth orthoborates are herein reported up to 17.4(2) and 13.4(2) GPa respectively. The subsequent determination of the room-temperature pressure-volume equations of state is presented and discussed in the context of contemporary publications which contradict the findings of this work. In particular, the isothermal bulk moduli of GdBO3 and YBO3 are found to be 170(13) and 163(13) GPa respectively, almost 50% smaller than recent findings. Abstract An increased knowledge of polymer crystallization kinetics and its effect on the crystalline structure is of particular importance at high cooling rates. The aims of this study were to explore the range of utility and complementarity of various methods (densitometry, microscopy, wide-angle x-ray diffraction [WAXD], and small-angle light scattering [SALS]) on the characterization of the crystalline structure of a high purity isotactic polypropylene (PP) in a wider cooling range than previously obtainable and to identify characteristic ranges of the structure as a function of cooling rate.
