The demir kapija ophiolite, Macedonia (FYROM): A Snapshot of subduction initiation within a back-arc
2013
The Demir Kapija ophiolitic complex in southern Macedonia–FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) represents the southernmost exposure of the Tethyan Eastern Vardar ophiolitic unit in the Eastern Mediterranean. It consists of a mafic volcanic sequence (pillow basalts, sheeted dyke diabases and gabbros) that was subsequently intruded by island arc magmas with and without adakitic affinity. The mafic volcanic sequence is characterized by slightly increased ratios of large ion lithophile elements to high field strength elements (LILE/HFSE), flat rare earth element (REE) patterns, radiogenic 143Nd/144Nd (up to 0·51272) and high TiO2 contents (which reflect Pl + Ol + Cpx fractionation). Physics at the grocery store
2022
The motion of a food can on an accelerated conveyor belt in a grocery store is described by means of Newtonian mechanics. By assuming that the food can may roll on the conveyor belt, when the cashier starts this device, one can prove that the rolling motion, observed in the belt reference system, is such that the can is seen to move away for the cashier. Experiments can be performed with common material: an empty and a full food can, and a sheet of paper as conveyor belt.

Caustics for spherical waves
2016
We study the development of caustics in shift-symmetric scalar field theories by focusing on simple waves with an $SO(p)$-symmetry in an arbitrary number of space dimensions. We show that the pure Galileon, the DBI-Galileon, and the extreme-relativistic Galileon naturally emerge as the unique set of caustic-free theories, highlighting a link between the caustic-free condition for simple $SO(p)$-waves and the existence of either a global Galilean symmetry or a global (extreme-)relativistic Galilean symmetry.
Locating Objects Away from Earth Surface: Positioning Accuracy
2013
The motion of the Galileo and GPS satellite constellations is simulated in Schwarzschild space-time, whereas photons travel in Minkowski space-time. This is a good enough approach to deal with the main goal of this paper: the study of positioning accuracy in the framework of the so-called relativistic positioning. Our study is based on numerical 4D simulations. In this meeting, the contribution of J.A. Morales-Lladosa contains some basic ideas which have been important to perform our numerical calculations. For four chosen emitters (satellites) of a certain constellation, many receivers located at different distances from Earth surface and in distinct directions are considered. Thus, we ver…
Disentangling Isoetes setacea and removing threats to Isoetes echinospora
2015
The name Isoetes setacea has been applied to two different species, causing nomenclatural and taxonomic confusion. Some authors have rejected it on that account, yet it is currently used in a sense that is incompatible with its type. That type represents one of two similar species, I. echinospora and I. lacustris, which still today grow together at the type locality. An epitype is designated here, ensuring that I. setacea is sunk in synonymy under I. lacustris. A second name potentially threatening I. echinospora is I. tenella. It is currently regarded as a synonym of I. lacustris, but its type, a plate in Flora Danica, cannot be confidently identified, nor are there any specimens associate…
A conspectus of and key to GreekIsoetes(Isoetaceae), based on a reassessment of Haussknecht's gatherings of 1885
2015
The three Isoetes species recorded from Thessalia (Thessaly) in N Greece by Haussknecht, in 1899, under the names I. setacea, I. heldreichii, and I. phrygia, were reassessed using megaspore and microspore ornamentation in addition to macromorphological features. “Isoetes setacea” is not the SW European I. delilei to which the name I. setacea was generally misapplied, nor “I. echinospora” as it has been called due to a misunderstanding, but a so far undescribed species here named I. haussknechtii; it has not been found again in Haussknecht’s locality but has recently turned up in Peloponnisos and the E Aegean Islands. I. heldreichii, described from Haussknecht’s gathering, is apparently exti…
