Sulfuric acid cleanup and KOH-ethanol treatment for confirmation of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls: application to wastewate…

1987

Abstract The efficacy of sulfuric acid cleanup and KOH-ethanol hydrolysis confirmation was studied for 22 organochlorine pesticides and 2 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Mean recoveries for different treatment times are given. The method was applied to analysis of several wastewater samples by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Organochlorine compounds were extracted by using separatory funnels and 15% diethyl ether in hexane as extractant. All the compounds studied could be analyzed except trifluralin, dichloran, dieldrin, and endrin, which were destroyed after treatment with concentrated H2S04. The pesticides found most commonly in the samples analyzed were fenson, tetr…

Inhibitory Effects of the Insecticides Allethrin, Lindane, and Jacutin-Fogetten Sublimate on Photosynthetic Electron Transport

1979

Abstract The inhibitory effects of the insecticides Allethrin, Lindane, and Jacutin-Fogetten sublimate on photosynthetic electron transport of broken chloroplasts were tested. 50 μmol l-1 Allethrin caused an inhibition of 80% of the benzoquinone and ferricyanide Hill-reactions. 39 μmol l-1 Lindane inhibited the basal, coupled and uncoupled electron transport to ferricyanide up to 35%. The precipitate formed by the sublimation of Jauctin-Fogetten containing Lindane depressed electron transport much more than pure Lindane. 50 μg ml-1 of the sublimate led to an 80% inhibition of ferricyanide Hill-reaction.

Ecotoxicological studies with the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus II. An assessment of the chronic toxicity of lindane and 3,4-dichloroani…

1993

The effects of chronic exposure of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to the toxicants lindane and 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), were evaluated. The parameters used to determine the toxicity on these compounds were the age-specific and fertility, and the demographic parameters: intrinsic rate of natural increase (r), generation time (T), net reproductive rate (Ro), reproductive value (Vx) and life expectancy (eo). All the demographic parameters studied decreased with increasing toxicant concentrations. The use of life tables techniques with B. calyciflorus as a test method for the determination of chronic toxicity of xenobiotics is discussed.

Wirkung der Insektizide Allethrin, Lindan und Jacutin-Fogetten-Sublimat auf den photosynthetischen Elektronentransport

1977

Summary During our studies of Hill-reactions of isolated chloroplasts we observed an inhibition of electron transport after an application of the smoke of «Jacutine-Fogetten» in the plant growth chamber. Therefore we tested the influence of the insecticides Lindane (Gammexan), the sublimate formed by the fumigation of «Jacutin Fogetten», and of Allethrin on the photosynthetic electron transport reactions of PS II and PS I. 39 μ M Lindane inhibits the basal, coupled and uncoupled electron transport to ferricyanide of broken chloroplasts isolated from leaves of Pisum sativum up to 35%. A higher inhibitory effect with higher concentrations is limited by the low water solubility of Lindane. On …

From arsenic to DDT: Pesticides, Fascism and the invisibility of toxic risks in the early years of Francoist Spain (1939-1953)

2021

This paper reviews the way in which Spanish agriculture climbed onto the pesticide treadmill. We claim that Fascist policies and expert advice assembled in the early 1940s accelerated the introduction of pesticides into Spanish agriculture and promoted the emergence of the Spanish pesticide industry in the times of autarky. Agricultural engineers were the key protagonists in this process, but other human and non-human actors also played a pivotal role: a new pest (the Colorado beetle), Francoist politicians, farmers, landowners and industry managers. Our focus is on the use of pesticides against the Colorado beetle (the main threat to the potato crop), and the transition from arsenical pest…

Effects of lindane on fish carbohydrate metabolism.

1991

Exposure of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) to a high sublethal concentration of 0.335 ppm (0.50 of the 96-hr LC50) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr affected carbohydrate metabolism. Muscle glycogen levels decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr; liver glycogen content did not decline at any time. Muscle glucose levels in fish were elevated at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr but in liver, the levels increased only at 96 hr. Mean values of muscle and liver pyruvate were elevated significantly (P less than 0.05) at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hr. Muscle lactate levels increased at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hr in pesticide-treated fish. Liver lactate levels we…

Lindane-induced changes in carbohydrate metabolism in Anguilla anguilla

1992

Abstract 1. Anguilla anguilla (L.) was exposed to a sublethal concentration of 0.167 ppm (0.25 of the 96-hr lc 50 ) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. 2. Changes in glycogen, glucose, pyruvate and lactate contents of liver and muscle after lindane exposure, were studied. 3. Muscle and liver glycogen levels decreased significantly during the exposure time. Muscle glucose values increased but on the other hand we found a decrease in those of liver. 4. Muscle and liver pyruvate content increased as did lactate levels in both tissues. 5. The observed effects of lindane on carbohydrate metabolism in fish are discussed in relation to acute stress syndrome.
