Robust adaptive backstepping control design for a Nonlinear Hydraulic-Mechanical System

2009

The complex dynamics that characterize hydraulic systems make it difficult for the control design to achieve prescribed goals in an efficient manner. In this paper, we present the design and analysis of a robust nonlinear controller for a Nonlinear Hydraulic-Mechanical (NHM) System. The system consists of an electrohydraulic servo valve and two hydraulic cylinders. Specifically, by considering a part of the dynamics of the NHM system as a norm-bounded uncertainty, two adaptive controllers are developed based on the backstepping technique that ensure the tracking error signals asymptotically converge to zero despite the uncertainties in the system according to the Barbalat lemma. The resulti…

Force Variations on Heave Compensating System for Ultra-Deepwater Drilling Risers

2010

This paper discusses modeling aspects related to dynamic analysis of deep water drilling risers. These risers must have a heave compensator that maintains a near constant tension in the riser independent on platform motions. Traditional riser analysis will apply constant top tension or a simple parametric model that may give approximate tension variation. The present paper describes an alternative analysis procedure that consists of the following step: • Global riser analysis including calculation of dynamic stroke of the heave compensator from platform motions and riser dynamics. A “pipe-in-pipe” approach is used to represent the hydraulic cylinders. • Calculation of dynamic tension variat…

Finite Element Simulation of Multilayer Metal Cylinder Head Gaskets

2006

ABAQUS gasket elements are an efficient and flexible tool to study gasket applications. Nevertheless the usage of the ABAQUS gasket elements is not limited to gasket analysis, but it provides an effective improvement in structural analysis. The results point out that both the predicted contact pressure and the predicted stress distribution depend on the mesh topology. Several combinations of mesh dimension and topology are investigated. The purpose is the definition of a calculation methodology and the demonstration of the application potentiality. Complex models analysis highlights that the set methodology constitutes a very effective tool for the design and optimization of gasket, cylinde…

Modeling and Simulation of a Cylinder Hoisting System for Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

2016

Summary Modeling-and-simulation software that is used in the design and development of drilling equipment provides testing and redesigning of offshore machines early in the product-development process. Typically, models of offshore equipment are complex and suitable only for offline simulations that allow testing of just predefined functions of the system without the possibility of controlling it with the operator's inputs in real time (RT). This is related to the fact that, usually, complex models put high demands on the computational power of the simulator hardware and, thus, limit its RT performance. On the basis of the authors' observations, it is concluded that RT performance can be di…

The Loss of Structural Integrity in Damaged Spruce Needles from Locations Exposed to Air Pollution I. Mesophyll and Central Cylinder

1990

In connection with the new type of forest damage, the individual disease situation of two-year-old spruce (Picea abies) needles was analyzed histopathologically in forest areas exposed to different levels of O3-, SO2- and NO3- pollution. Early damage results from losses of chlorophyll in the mesophyll cells. The bleaching is more intensive towards the apex in severely damaged needles. The cytoplasm is aggregated at the cell wall and the chloroplasts show definite structural damage as well. The mesophyll cells below the epidermis, or the cells adjacent to the vascular bundle sheath, appear to be particularly susceptible. Collapsed cells (bone cells), which increase in number with damage, can…

An easy-to-use model for O2 supply to red muscle. Validity of assumptions, sensitivity to errors in data

1995

An easy-to-use capillary cylinder model of O2 supply to muscle is presented that considers all those factors that are known to be most important for realistic results: (1) red blood cell (RBC) O2 unloading along the capillary, (2) effects of the particulate nature of blood, (3) free and hemoglobin-facilitated O2 diffusion and reaction kinetics inside RBCs, (4) free and myoglobin-facilitated O2 diffusion inside the muscle cell, and (5) carrier-free region separating RBC and tissue. In a first approach, a highly simplified yet reasonably accurate treatment of the complex three-dimensional oxygen diffusion field in and next to capillaries is employed. As an alternative, a more realistic descri…

Simple algorithms for calculation of the axial‐symmetric heat transport problem in a cylinder

2001

The approximation of axial‐symmetric heat transport problem in a cylinder is based on the finite volume method. In the classical formulation of the finite volume method it is assumed that the flux terms in the control volume are approximated with the finite difference expressions. Then in the 1‐D case the corresponding finite difference scheme for the given source function is not exact. There we propose the exact difference scheme. In 2‐D case the corresponding integrals are approximated using different quadrature formulae. This procedure allows one to reduce the heat transport problem described by a partial differential equation to an initial‐value problem for a system of two ordinary diff…

Twisting and buckling: A new undulation mechanism for artificial swimmers

2012

Among the various locomotion strategies of the animal kingdom, the undulation locomotion is of particular interest for biomimetic applications. In this paper, we present an artificial swimmer set into motion by a new and non-trivial undulation mechanism, based on the twisting and buckling of its body. The swimmer consists of a long cylinder of ferrogel which is polarized transversely and in opposite directions at each extremity. When it is placed on a water film and submitted to a transverse oscillating magnetic field, the worm-like swimmer undulates and swims. Whereas symmetry breaking is due to the field gradient, the undulations of the worm result from a torsional buckling instability as…

Development and validation of a 5 stroke engine for range extenders application

2014

International audience; A 5-stroke turbo-charged port-injection spark-ignition engine has been developed in the present study for use as a range extender or series-hybrid main power source. The development and the design of the engine are based on 0D/1D model and experimental results have been compared with the engine model. The 5-stroke engine is a three-cylinder in which two cylinders perform a four-stroke cycle and alternatively a second expansion of the burnt gases is performed in the third cylinder. The boost pressure delivered by the turbocharger is controlled by a particular innovative system called “smart wastegate”, different from a conventional wastegate, consisting in a variable …

Article appears in Volume 25 issue 4 of the journal: http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4799253 The onset of thermal convection in a vertical porous cylinder is studied by considering the heating from below and the cooling from above as caused by external forced convection processes. These processes are parametrised through a finite Biot number, and hence through third-kind, or Robin, temperature conditions imposed on the lower and upper b…
