Asymptomatic carotid lesions add to cardiovascular risk prediction.

2010

AIM To show that subclinical atherosclerosis (subclinical-ATS) of carotid arteries [intima-media thickness (IMT) or asymptomatic carotid plaque (ACP)], may provide additional information for risk stratification, in asymptomatic patients, aged greater than 45 years, with a cluster of risk factors (RFs). METHODS AND RESULTS We studied 558 asymptomatic patients (235 males). RFs for atherosclerosis were assessed and the 10-year-risk was calculated according to the Italian risk score. Doppler ultrasound of carotid arteries identified the presence of IMT greater than 0.9 mm in 183 patients and ACP in 147 patients. One hundred and fifty-three patients developed cerebrovascular or cardiovascular (C…

Empirical analysis of daily cash flow time-series and its implications for forecasting

2019

Usual assumptions on the statistical properties of daily net cash flows include normality, absence of correlation and stationarity. We provide a comprehensive study based on a real-world cash flow data set showing that: (i) the usual assumption of normality, absence of correlation and stationarity hardly appear; (ii) non-linearity is often relevant for forecasting; and (iii) typical data transformations have little impact on linearity and normality. This evidence may lead to consider a more data-driven approach such as time-series forecasting in an attempt to provide cash managers with expert systems in cash management.

Airy-function approach to binary black hole merger waveforms: The fold-caustic diffraction model

2022

From numerical simulations of the Einstein equations, and also from gravitational wave observations, the gravitational wave signal from a binary black hole merger is seen to be simple and to possess certain universal features. The simplicity is somewhat surprising given that non-linearities of general relativity are thought to play an important role at the merger. The universal features include an increasing amplitude as we approach the merger, where transition from an oscillatory to a damped regime occurs in a pattern apparently oblivious to the initial conditions. We propose an Airy-function pattern to model the binary black hole (BBH) merger waveform, focusing on accounting for its simpl…

A homemade device for linear sucrose gradients

2008

We have developed a simple and inexpensive device to obtain linear sucrose gradients with commonly used laboratory materials--a syringe, a flask, a plastic tube, and a piece of Pongo (Play-Doh). Refractive index values measured on sucrose fractions collected using our system demonstrate both the linearity and reliability of the gradients obtained.

$MC$-hypercentral groups

2007

This paper is devoted to the imposition of some chain conditions on groups having a generalized central series. It is also given a characterization of MC-groups with finite abelian section rank: such class of groups is a suitable enlargement of the class of FC-groups. Mathematics Subject Classification: 20F24; 20F14

Phenolic metabolites from 5,000-year-old coprolites of Myotragus balearicus, an extinct insular bovid

2020

Abstract To date, the identification of polyphenols in the archaeological and palaeontological record has been limited. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the presence of flavonoid and phenolic metabolites from non-mineralised coprolites belonging to a non-human mammal species. Myotragus balearicus is the last species of a bovid lineage that became extinct during the Holocene in the western Mediterranean basin. In this work, we characterize the phenolic metabolites of M. balearicus coprolites for the first time. The chemical analysis of coprolites revealed the presence of flavonoids, such as flavones and flavonols. Moreover, the detection of conjugates of hydroxyphenylvaleric, hydroxyp…

The antioxidant effect in controlling thermal degradation of a low density polyethylene blown film

2004

Abstract It is well known that antioxidants are widely used to prevent thermal degradation of high density and linear low density polyethylene. Antioxidants are not always present in low density polyethylene and only small amounts are usually added to these resins. In this work the effect of an antioxidant system on a low density resin having MFI (190 °C/2.16 kg)=2 g/10′ and density 0.9230 g/cm3 has been studied. Its effect on melt viscosity has been studied by means of a batch mixer and the torque vs time behaviour has been analysed. The results show that a maximum in the torque vs time curve can be seen for the material containing antioxidant. In contrast, the material without antioxidant…

Microwave-assisted distillation of iodine for the indirect atomic absorption spectrometric determination of iodide in milk samples

2001

To complete these microwave distillation studies, a method for iodide determination in milk-type samples is proposed. The iodide contained in the sample is oxidized to iodine, which is distilled by means of microwave energy and reduced back to iodide. This iodide is combined with Hg(II) and 2,2′-dipyridyl to give an ion pair, which is selectively extracted into IBMK. Mercury is determined in the extract by ETAAS in order to determine iodide. The yield of the distillation process (100%) was evaluated using the Sandell–Kolthoff reaction. In addition, for the solvent extraction, no buffer was needed; 3/5 was the best phase ratio (organic/aqueous); 30 s was the shaking time and the extracts wer…
