Existence of global weak solutions to the kinetic Peterlin model

2018

Abstract We consider a class of kinetic models for polymeric fluids motivated by the Peterlin dumbbell theories for dilute polymer solutions with a nonlinear spring law for an infinitely extensible spring. The polymer molecules are suspended in an incompressible viscous Newtonian fluid confined to a bounded domain in two or three space dimensions. The unsteady motion of the solvent is described by the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with the elastic extra stress tensor appearing as a forcing term in the momentum equation. The elastic stress tensor is defined by Kramer’s expression through the probability density function that satisfies the corresponding Fokker–Planck equation. In thi…

Nonlinear effects in charge stabilized colloidal suspensions

2006

Molecular Dynamics simulations are used to study the effective interactions in charged stabilized colloidal suspensions. For not too high macroion charges and sufficiently large screening, the concept of the potential of mean force is known to work well. In the present work, we focus on highly charged macroions in the limit of low salt concentrations. Within this regime, nonlinear corrections to the celebrated DLVO theory [B. Derjaguin and L. Landau, Acta Physicochem. USSR {\bf 14}, 633 (1941); E.J.W. Verwey and J.T.G. Overbeck, {\em Theory of the Stability of Lyotropic Colloids} (Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1948)] have to be considered. For non--bulklike systems, such as isolated pairs or triples…

Self-consistent field theory based molecular dynamics with linear system-size scaling

2012

We present an improved field-theoretic approach to the grand-canonical potential suitable for linear scaling molecular dynamics simulations using forces from self-consistent electronic structure calculations. It is based on an exact decomposition of the grand canonical potential for independent fermions and does neither rely on the ability to localize the orbitals nor that the Hamilton operator is well-conditioned. Hence, this scheme enables highly accurate all-electron linear scaling calculations even for metallic systems. The inherent energy drift of Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations, arising from an incomplete convergence of the self-consistent field cycle, is circumvented …

Near-unity third-harmonic circular dichroism driven by a quasibound state in the continuum in asymmetric silicon metasurfaces

2021

We use numerical simulations to demonstrate third-harmonic generation with near-unity nonlinear circular dichroism (CD) and high conversion efficiency $({10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\text{W}}^{\ensuremath{-}2})$ in asymmetric Si-on-$\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ metasurfaces. The working principle relies on the spin-selective excitation of a quasibound state in the continuum, characterized by a very high $(g{10}^{5})$ quality factor. By tuning multimode interference with the variation of the metasurface geometrical parameters, we show the possibility to control both linear CD and nonlinear CD. Our results pave the way for the development of all-dielectric metasurfaces for …

General-relativistic approach to the nonlinear evolution of collisionless matter.

1993

A new general-relativistic algorithm is developed to study the nonlinear evolution of scalar (density) perturbations of an irrotational collisionless fluid up to shell crossing, under the approximation of neglecting the interaction with tensor (gravitational-wave) perturbations. The dynamics of each fluid element is separately followed in its own inertial rest frame by a system of twelve coupled first-order ordinary differential equations, which can be further reduced to six under very general conditions. Initial conditions are obtained in a cosmological framework, from linear theory, in terms of a single gauge-invariant potential. Physical observables, which are expressed in the Lagrangian…

Experimental evidence of X-shaped spatiotemporal coherence of superfluorescence radiation

2006

Considering the parametric generation process in a quadratic nonlinear crystal, we report the experimental observation of optical waves characterized by a X-shaped spatiotemporal coherence, i.e. a coherence skewed along spatiotemporal trajectories.

Anti-phase wave patterns in a ring of electrically coupled oscillatory neurons

2013

International audience; Space-time dynamics of the network system modeling collective behavior of electrically coupled nonlinear cells is investigated. The dynamics of a local cell is described by the dimensionless Morris-Lecar system. It is shown that such a system yields a special class of traveling localized collective activity so called "anti-phase wave patterns". The mechanisms of formation of the patterns are discussed and the region of their existence is obtained by using the weakly coupled oscillators theory.

Nonlinear anisotropic heat conduction in a transformer magnetic core

1996

In this chapter we deal with a quasilinear elliptic problem whose classical formulation reads: Find \( u \in {C^1}\left( {\bar \Omega } \right) \) such that u|Ω ∈ C 2(Ω) and $$ - div\left( {A\left( { \cdot ,u} \right)grad\;u} \right) = f\quad in\;\Omega $$ (9.1) $$ u = \bar u\quad on\;{\Gamma _1} $$ (9.2) $$ \alpha u + {n^T}A\left( { \cdot ,u} \right)grad\;u = g\quad on\;{\Gamma _2} $$ (9.3) where Ω ∈ L, n = (n 1, ..., n d ) T is the outward unit normal to ∂Ω, d ∈ {1, 2, ...,}, Γ1 and Γ2 are relatively open sets in the boundary ∂Ω, \({\overline \Gamma _1} \cup {\overline \Gamma _2} = \partial \Omega ,\,{\Gamma _1} \cap {\Gamma _2} = \phi\), \( A = \left( {{a_{ij}}} \right)_{i,j = 1}^d \) is…

Unequal rapidity correlators in the dilute limit of JIMWLK

2019

We study unequal rapidity correlators in the stochastic Langevin picture of Jalilian-Marian-Iancu-McLerran-Weigert-Leonidov-Kovner (JIMWLK) evolution in the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. We discuss a diagrammatic interpretation of the long-range correlators. By separately evolving the Wilson lines in the direct and complex conjugate amplitudes, we use the formalism to study two-particle production at large rapidity separations. We show that the evolution between the rapidities of the two produced particles can be expressed as a linear equation, even in the full nonlinear limit. We also show how the Langevin formalism for two-particle correlations reduces to a BFKL picture i…

Recent progress on Frequency Difference Electrical Impedance Tomography

2009

Although time-dierence EIT(tdEIT) has shown promise as a medical EIT imaging tech- nique such as monitoring lung function, static EIT has suered from forward computational model errors including boundary geometry and electrode positions uncertainty combined with the ill-posed and highly nonlinear nature of the corresponding inverse problem. Since 1980s, there has been great endeavor to create forward computational models with the necessary accuracy required for EIT recon- struction, but these eorts were not successful in clinical environment. This is the main reason why we consider frequency-dieren ce EIT (fdEIT) where we take advantage of frequency dependance of biological tissue by inject…
