Thermomechanical analysis supporting the preliminary engineering design of DONES target assembly

2018

Abstract The design of the Demo Oriented NEutron Source (DONES) is the main objective of the Work Package Early Neutron Source (WPENS) of EUROfusion Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme. DONES is an IFMIF-based neutron source with the goal of testing and qualifying candidate materials to be used in DEMO and future fusion power plants. In the framework of these activities, a research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA labs, in order to assess the thermomechanical performances of the DONES target system, endowed with an integrated Target Assembly (TA) when it undergoes the thermomechanical loads typical of its nominal oper…

Structural analysis of the back supporting structure of the DEMO WCLL outboard blanket

2017

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities an intense research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA Brasimone, in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical performances of the outboard segment Back-Supporting Structure (BSS) of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket (WCLL). In particular, the configuration of the outboard segment BSS, purposely set-up by the WCLL project team during 2015 according to the blanket “multi-module system” concept, has been taken into account in order to study its steady state thermo-mechanical behaviour, paying attention to the simulation of both modules-BSS and BSS-vacuum vessel…

Asymmetric Comparison and Querying of Biological Networks

2011

Comparing and querying the protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks of different organisms is important to infer knowledge about conservation across species. Known methods that perform these tasks operate symmetrically, i.e., they do not assign a distinct role to the input PPI networks. However, in most cases, the input networks are indeed distinguishable on the basis of how the corresponding organism is biologically well characterized. In this paper a new idea is developed, that is, to exploit differences in the characterization of organisms at hand in order to devise methods for comparing their PPI networks. We use the PPI network (called Master) of the best characterized organism as a …

Equivalent Non-Linearization of Hysteretic Systems by Means of RPS

2018

BackgroundThe analysis of elastoplastic systems with hardening (Bouc-Wen systems) under stochastic (seismic) loads needs the evaluation of higher order statistics even in the simplest case of normal distributed input. ObjectiveIn this paper, a non-linearization technique is proposed in order to evaluate the moments of any order of the response. MethodThis technique is developed by means of a nonlinear class of systems whose statistics are a priori known. The parameters of such systems can be chosen in such a way that the two systems are equivalent in a wide sense. Result & ConclusionIn the paper, the strategy to obtain the equivalence and the reliability of the results are discussed.

Approximate analytic and numerical solutions to Lane-Emden equation via fuzzy modeling method

2012

Published version in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/259494 A novel algorithm, called variable weight fuzzy marginal linearization VWFML method, is proposed. Thismethod can supply approximate analytic and numerical solutions to Lane-Emden equations. And it is easy to be implemented and extended for solving other nonlinear differential equations. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the developed technique.

Application of Wavelet Networks to Adaptive Control of Robotic Manipulators

2011

Published version of a chapter in the book: Intelligent Robotics and Applications. Also available from the publisher at; http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-25489-5_39 In this paper, a wavelet-based adaptive control is proposed for a class of robotic manipulators, which consist of nonlinearities for friction effects and uncertain terms as disturbances. The controller is calculated by using a mixed of feedback linearization technique, supervisory control and H∞ control. In addition, the parameter adaptive laws of the wavelet network are developed using a Lyapunov-based design. It is also shown that both system tracking stability and convergence of the error estimation can be guaranteed in th…

Direct evaluation of the equivalent linear damping for TLCD systems in random vibration for pre-design purposes

2014

Abstract Passive control of structural vibrations has received in recent years a great attention from researchers concerned with vibration control. Several types of devices have been proposed in order to reduce the dynamic responses of different kinds of structural systems. Among them, the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) proved to be very effective in reducing vibration of structures. Since the increasing use of TLCDs in practical realizations, this paper aims at developing an approximate formulation, by means of a statistical linearization technique, able to estimate the parameters of a structure equipped with a TLCD subjected to random loads for pre-design purposes. Moreover, it is show…

Unsaturated Soil Hydraulic Properties

2016

In the first part of this chapter, the tension infiltrometer (TI) technique is illustrated. After having described apparatus and instruments as well as the operative procedures in the field, the solutions based on the Wooding’s equation for steady-state flow are presented. Specific focus is given to the multi-potential approaches that allow determination of unsaturated soil hydraulic conductivity, K 0, corresponding to a sequence of pressure head values, h 0, imposed on the soil surface. The analytical model proposed by Haverkamp et al. (1994) to describe three-dimensional transient infiltration from a circular source is introduced and a single-test approach is presented that allows estimat…

ON THE BOUSSINESQ HIERARCHY

2002

A new sequence of nonlinear evolution systems satisfying the zero curvature property is constructed, by using the invariant singularity analysis. All these systems are completely integrable and a pseudo-potential (linearization) is explicitly determined for each of them. The second system of the sequence is the Broer-Kaup system, which, as is well known, corresponds to the higher order Boussinesq approximation in describing shallow water waves.

Development of a thermodesorption sensor system for the detection of residual solvents in packaging materials

2004

Application specific sensor systems (formerly electronic noses) use static headspace for the volatile generation from condensed phase samples. This extraction method is very simple to implement, but suffers many drawbacks, i.e. in terms of efficiency or sensitivity to partitioning and is very time-consuming. To circumvent these problems, we developed a new method using dynamic extraction of volatiles (stripping). Although this method is known for GC (gas chromatography), the utilization of direct thermal desorption (DTD) in conjunction with gas sensors is quite novel. The unhandy cold trapping step can be avoided by a software integration of the instantaneous volatile concentration over the…
