Revisiting the Etymology of Greek mégas, megàle, méga

Despite the numerous attempts at clarification that have been made over the past hundred years or so, there are still many doubts surrounding the etymology of Gr. μέγας, μεγάλη, μέγα “big, great, mighty”, especially with regard to the relation between the Greek adjective and forms attested in other Indo-European languages. The paper follows a new track. By having recourse to É. Benveniste’s theory of the structure of the Indo-European root, a stem II *sm-eĝ- is supposed in which *s- could share the characteristics of the so-called ‘mobile s-’. Thanks to this hypothesis most of the pre-existing doubts are dispelled.

Parameterizing 'lexical subject-finite verb' inversion across Verb Second languages: On the role of Relativized Minimality at the vP edge

By discussing novel data from two Dolomitic Ladin languages spoken in Northern Italy, Badiotto and Gardenese, we show that in these Verb-second languages subject-finite verb inversion i) is constrained by the syntactic (adverb or object) and discourse (focus or topic) nature of the sentence-initial constituent, and by the discourse status of the DP subject. We demonstrate that in both varieties subjects in inversion either appear in a FocusP of the vP periphery (Belletti 2004, Poletto 2010) or in an A position in the IP layer, and that the observed distribution of inversion follows from two universal constraints of movement affecting extraction through the vP edge: a) cyclicity (extraction …

Scopo di questo lavoro è un’analisi dell’uso non canonico della congiunzione piuttosto che: si tenterà di tracciare il percorso responsabile del mutamento sintattico e semantico che conduce dall’uso subordinativo a quello coordinativo. Guido d’Arezzo in the Micrologus points out an ascending scale of the units that form the songs, drawing a parallel between this one and the ascending scale of the units that form the metres according to the Latin grammarians. The units of the metres are: litterae, syllabae, partes, pedes, versus; the units of the songs are: soni, syllabae, neumae/partes, distinctiones. Si propone un raffronto tra strutture a verbo supporto, nel dominio della proposizione, e strutture a determinante nominale complesso, nel dominio del sintagma nominale. Per entrambi i tipi di struttura si avanza l'ipotesi che la testa sintattica non sia quella tradizionalmente riconosciuta e si suggerisce quali siano i punti di partenza ai fini della traduzione automatica.
