Global-Local model for guided wave scattering problems with application to defect characterization in built-up composite structures

2020

Abstract Predicting scattering of elastic guided waves in multi-layered solid plates with geometrical and/or material discontinuities is of great interest to many fields, including ultrasonic-based Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and health monitoring of critical structural components (SHM). The problem is complicated by the multimode and dispersive behaviour of the guided waves. This paper describes a unified Global-Local (GL) approach that is computationally efficient in cases that can be very complex in terms of geometry and/or material properties. One example of this is a composite built-up structure. The proposed GL procedure discretizes the “local” region with the scattering discontinui…

If we want to get to the bottom of the definition of ἄρθρον in the Poetics, in my opinion we have to work hard in several directions. First of all, it should be vigorously emphasized that the definitions of σύνδeσμος and ἄρθρον in the Poetics are aimed at the subsequent definition of λόγος [This is very aptly pointed out already in Bywater (1909, p. 270).]. This definition recognizes two types of λόγος: the λόγος that is unitary by itself and the λόγος that is unitary thanks to a connector (Poet. See Met. Ζ 4, 1030 a 9, b 5-10; H6, 1045 a 12-14.). Now, if th…

La transformación de DICAT: el potencial de la visualización digital de redes para el teatro clásico español

2021

This paper analyses and proposes the steps to transform Diccionario biográfico de actores del teatro clásico español DICAT in order to be federated on ASODAT system of databases. We intend to assess whether or not the visualization of nets may be a useful and operational tool to analysing the biographical and professional information established between actors and actress of early modern Spanish theater, and to show patterns of social relation.

The Association of Appendectomy, Adhesions, Tubal Pathology, and Female Infertility.

2019

Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate a potential association between previous childhood appendectomy, tube pathology, and female infertility. Methods: We reviewed patients seeking care at the fertility clinic of our university medical center between 2006 and 2016. The history of previous appendectomy was extracted from hospital documentation and by telephone follow-up. Tubal patency was assessed by diagnostic laparoscopy and chromopertubation. Results: In our study cohort (N = 237), 24.9% (n = 59) had a history of previous appendectomy. Previous appendectomy, therefore, was about 3-fold more prevalent in women seeking fertility treatment than in the general pop…

Do transposed-letter similarity effects occur at a morpheme level? Evidence for morpho-orthographic decomposition

2007

When does morphological decomposition occur in visual word recognition? An increasing body of evidence suggests the presence of early morphological processing. The present work investigates this issue via an orthographic similarity manipulation. Three masked priming lexical decision experiments were conducted to examine the transposed-letter similarity effect (e.g., jugde facilitates JUDGE more than the control jupbe) in polymorphemic and monomorphemic words. If morphological decomposition occurs at early stages of visual word recognition, we would expect an interaction with transposed-letter effects. Experiment 1 was carried out in Basque, which is an agglutinative language. The nonword pr…

The use of control groups in artificial grammar learning.

2003

Experimenters assume that participants of an experimental group have learned an artificial grammar if they classify test items with significantly higher accuracy than does a control group without training. The validity of such a comparison, however, depends on an additivity assumption: Learning is superimposed on the action of non-specific variables—for example, repetitions of letters, which modulate the performance of the experimental group and the control group to the same extent. In two experiments we were able to show that this additivity assumption does not hold. Grammaticality classifications in control groups without training (Experiments 1 and 2) depended on non-specific features. T…

ERP correlates of transposed-letter priming effects: The role of vowels versus consonants

2008

One key issue for any computational model of visual-word recognition is the choice of an input coding scheme for assigning letter position. Recent research has shown that pseudowords created by transposing two letters are very effective at activating the lexical representation of their base words (e.g., relovution activates REVOLUTION). We report a masked priming lexical decision experiment in which the pseudoword primes were created by transposing/replacing two consonants or two vowels while event-related potentials were recorded. The results showed a modulation of the amplitude at an early window (150-250 ms) and at the N400 component for vowels but not for consonant transpositions. In ad…

Emotional suppression and breast cancer: validation research on the Spanish Adaptation of the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale (CECS).

2010

Emotional suppression has played an important role in the research on psychosocial factors related to cancer. It has been argued to be an important psychological factor predicting worse psychosocial adjustment in people with cancer and it may mediate health outcomes. The reference instrument in the research on emotional suppression is the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale (CECS). The present study analysed construct validity of a new Spanish adaptation of the CECS in a sample of 175 breast cancer patients. The results confirmed the proposal by Watson and Greer claiming that the CECS is composed of three subscales that measure different dimensions, but not independent, from emotional control…
