Language reality and linguistics. The author considers the ąuestion of the boundaries of language and linguistics, referring to the so-called full scientific theory. In the complex hierarchical-network structure of this theory, one can distinguish three levels: the philosophical basis, the theoretical-methodological level, and the empirical part. Així, es considera fora de lloc el tractament d’algun període previ a l’existència de la llengua catalana, com la de la romanització, i es rebutja alguna etiqueta que és una tradició inventada, com la de la reconquista. Given the problems one finds when attempting to define the goals of translation studies (practical, normative, descriptive…), its field (literature, philosophy, religion, technical jargons…) and its claims to institutional legitimacy, the épistemological basis of translation studies seems less assured than that of linguistics. This paper focuses on the fuzzy concept of phraseology and correlated notions (from interjections and true idioms to proverbs or aphorisms), as viewed from the viewpoint of Cognitive Linguistic and Discourse Analysis. Grammatical constructions, processes of grammaticalization, and discourse functions of lexical phrases are basic tools to deal with the field of idiomaticity, sociolinguistically relevant and indispensable in the framework of Applied Linguistics for tasks such as translations or language teaching.
