Die Ehrenmonate in der Zeit Caligulas. Zur Familienpropaganda des letzten julischen Kaisers

1997

2015

The study of the “Lusitanian robbery” led to an important research since the late nineteenth century.Nevertheless, and despite a gradual shift in modern historiography towards a more nuanced approachto the origin of the phenomenon, the problem of land still remains a central concern of many historiansand archaeologists. From a close discussion of the main passages of Livy, Diodorus and Appian especiallyrelating to the relationship that some have sought to establish between lack and / or poverty ofthe land and development of robbery among the Lusitanians, it gives a review of the socio-economicinterpretation.

Deep learning to detect built cultural heritage from satellite imagery. - Spatial distribution and size of vernacular houses in Sumba, Indonesia -

2021

Abstract In Sumba Island – Indonesia, the implantation of vernacular houses, inside and outside traditional villages, is considered to be an efficient proxy for the on-going complex cultural transformations resulting from globalization. This study presents an easily reproducible workflow allowing buildings to be automatically detected from satellite imagery, demonstrating how modern computer vision methods based on deep learning can help in this task, which would be far too time-consuming when undertaken by hand. Eight deep learning architectures based on convolutional neural networks were compared in terms of ability to identify and locate precisely traditional houses from satellite images…

Territorialization in Political Discourse: A Pragma-Linguistic Study of Jerzy Buzek’s Inaugural Speeches

2011

The purpose of this study is to review some discursive strategies used to (de)territorialize the European public sphere by the newly elected President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek. A corpus of his inaugural speeches (over 7,000 words) is examined in order to identify salient pragma-linguistic devices, such as for example high-frequency references, linguistic markers of identities, values and interests, as well as metaphors and argumentative schemata. These are presumed to have been used by Buzek to territorialize the presidential office: to position himself as its leader, to establish his credibility, to become its agenda-setter. Additionally, the analysis focuses on the way Buzek…

Argumentation Skills as Prerequisites for Collaborative Learning Among Finnish, French and English Secondary School Students.

2005

International audience; Argumentation skills of secondary school students were evaluated in Finland (n = 290), France (n = 54), and England (n = 41). The data were collected from 4 tasks comprising 7 variables. The results indicated that most of the students had correctly justified arguments and conclusions, and composed clear claims and relevant arguments. However, many students had difficulties in recognising the main claim and arguments for it in an expository text, and in commenting analytically on an argumentative text. Thus the students possessed the prerequisites for argumentative reasoning and writing but need further practice in analytical and critical reading.

Microgeographic Variation of Genetic Polymorphism in Argyresthia mendica (Lep.: Argyresthiidae)

1988

Field studies on the genetic structure of populations show a considerable amount of heterogeneity in space and time. In many cases, these heterogeneities can be related to structures in the environment, such as properties of soil, availability of special food resources, topographic conditions or climate. In other cases the genetic structure can be explained by properties of the plant and animal species under study, e.g. ability and speed of migration and colonization (Karlin and Nevo 1976; Endler 1977; Nevo 1978; Nevo and Yang 1979; Nevo et al. 1981; Seitz and Komma 1984; Wohrmann 1984).

Traduir sota la dictadura franquista, traduir clandestinament: Poesia (1944-1945) i Ariel (1946-1951)

2013

2019

This paper deals with Aristotle's definiton of arthron in the XX chapter of the Poetics. This definition has always been considered as an unsolvable dilemma. Starting with a detailed analysis of the Greek text, and of the various attempts to make sense of it, the paper attempts to read it in an innovative way. The xx chapter of the Poetics is not a classification of parts of speech, as it is usually considered; we have to read it in light of Aristotle's biological program. Arthron (as well as syndesmos, syllabé) are biological terms. In linguistics as well as in biology arthron is thus a 'joint': it has nothing to do with the «article» in later grammatical sense. In this light, the book off…
