Aeromonas encheleia sp. nov., isolated from European Eels

1995

Four strains isolated from European eels in Valencia, Spain, were found to constitute a DNA relatedness group which is 0 to 50% related to the 13 species and DNA group 11 of the genus Aeromonas. Phenotypically, these strains have all of the properties that define the genus Aeromonas. However, they differ from the previously described Aeromonas species by three or more properties. The strains are positive for motility, growth at 37 degrees C, indole production, and arginine dihydrolase activity. They exhibit negative reactions in tests for growth at 42 degrees C and in thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose medium (Oxoid), Simmons citrate tests, and tests for lysine and ornithine decarboxyla…

A novel tunicate (Botryllus schlosseri) putative C-type lectin features an immunoglobulin domain.

1997

We have cloned a putative C-type lectin of Botryllus schlosseri [Ascidiacea], whose deduced protein of 333 amino acids features three building blocks: (i) a Greek-key motif signature at the amino-terminus, (ii) a C-type lectin domain signature, and (iii) an immunoglobulin (Ig) domain at the carboxyl terminus. This C-type lectin was termed BSCLT. Similarity searches revealed that the Ig domain in BSCLT, which is evidently not polymorphic, is best classified as an Intermediate-type Ig domain. Rabbit antibodies, raised against recombinant BSCLT, cross-reacted in a Western blot with a 38-kD polypeptide in tunicate crude extract. Presumably, this bimodal tunicate protein is the first description…

Evolutionary relationships of the metazoan βγ–crystallins, including that from the marine spongeGeodia cydonium

1997

beta gamma-crystallins are one major component of vertebrate lenses. Here the isolation and characterization of a cDNA, coding for the first beta gamma-crystallin molecule from an invertebrate species, the marine sponge Geodia cydonium, is described. The size of the transcript as determined by Northern blotting was 0.7 kb in length. The deduced amino acid sequence consists of 163 aa residues and comprises four repeated motifs which compose the two domains of the beta gamma-crystallin. Motif 3 contains the characteristic beta gamma-crystallin 'Greek key' motif signature, while in each of the three other repeats, one aa residue is replaced by an aa with the same physico-chemical property. The…

Cloning and expression of new receptors belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium

1999

A cDNA encoding a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) was previously cloned and expressed from the marine sponge (Porifera) Geodia cydonium. In addition to the two intracellular regions characteristic for RTKs, two immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains are found in the extracellular part of the sponge RTK. In the present study it is shown that no further Ig-like domain is present in the upstream region of the cDNA as well as of the gene hitherto known from the sponge RTK. Two different full-length cDNAs have been isolated and characterized in the present study, which possess two Ig-like domains, one transmembrane segment, and only a short intracellular part, without a TK domain. The two deduced polyp…

Immunoglobulin-like domain is present in the extracellular part of the receptor tyrosine kinase from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium.

1994

We have isolated and characterized two cDNAs from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium coding for a new member of a receptor tyrosine kinase of class II. The deduced amino acid sequence shows two characteristic domains: (i) the tyrosine kinase domain; and (ii) and immunoglobulin-like domain. The latter part shows high homology to the vertebrate C2 type immunoglobulin domain. This result demonstrates that immunoglobulin domains are not recent achievements of higher animals but exist also in those animals which have diverged from other organisms about 800 million years ago.

Nigral influence on focal epilepsy.

1990

The substantia nigra (SN) has been proposed as a structure involved in epileptiform phenomena. Previous investigations demonstrated that SN is able to elicit hippocampal rhythmic slow activity (RSA) as well as to inhibit hippocampal interictal spikes induced by parenteral administration of penicillin. The present series of experiments was carried out in order to characterize the action of SN on a focal model of hippocampal epilepsy. Experiments were performed on encephale isole cats in which steady epileptiform activity was induced by locally applied penicillin. Electrical stimulation of SN pars reticulata (pr) caused a statistically significant decrease of hippocampal spike frequency and a…

Negative occurrence between hippocampal rhythmic slow activity and epileptiform spikes: Influence of the striatum

1986

AbstractThe effects of caudate and septal stimulation on hippocampal activity were studied. Sodium penicillin was intravenously injected in order to induce a steady rate of in-terictal epileptic activity. Penicillin injection caused significant reduction of the rate of occurrence and duration of hippocampal rhythmic slow activity (RSA). Spontaneous RSA as well as RSA-eliciting caudate and septal stimulation induced a marked inhibition on frequency of epileptiform complexes. Lesions of the medial septal nucleus made it impossible to record RSA or to observe any sort of influence on hippocampal epileptiform activity by caudate stimulation. This result suggests that the septum is important for…

Atomic Structures of Two Novel Immunoglobulin-like Domain Pairs in the Actin Cross-linking Protein Filamin

2009

Filamins are actin filament cross-linking proteins composed of an N-terminal actin-binding domain and 24 immunoglobulin-like domains (IgFLNs). Filamins interact with numerous proteins, including the cytoplasmic domains of plasma membrane signaling and cell adhesion receptors. Thereby filamins mechanically and functionally link the cell membrane to the cytoskeleton. Most of the interactions have been mapped to the C-terminal IgFLNs 16–24. Similarly, as with the previously known compact domain pair of IgFLNa20–21, the two-domain fragments IgFLNa16–17 and IgFLNa18–19 were more compact in small angle x-ray scattering analysis than would be expected for two independent domains. "Meidän vanhojen vanhuus on tämän ajan rikkautta" : vastarintaiset vanhuuskuvat ja myöhäinen tyyli Eeva Kilven teoksen Kuolinsiivous sisäisessä ja ul…

2015
