0347: Beneficial cardiovascular effects of O-GlcNAc stimulation in early phase of septic shock
2016
BackgroundO-GlcNAcylation, a post-translational modification, is the end product of the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway (HBP). Recent studies showed beneficial effects of its increase in acute pathologies, such as hemorrhagic shock. We postulated that increase in total protein OGlcNAcylation at the early phase of septic shock, a systemic inflammation associated with a cardiovascular dysfunction, could improve cardiovascular function and reduce mortality.MethodsTo induce an endotoxemic shock, rats (n=6-8) received iv either lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 5mg/kg) or saline (CTRL). After 1 h, fluid resuscitation (FR,15mL/kg of colloid, iv) was associated or not with HBP substrate: glucosamine (GlcN,…
The Mediterranean diet improves the systemic lipid and DNA oxidative damage in metabolic syndrome individuals. A randomized, controlled, trial.
2013
Summary Background & aims Metabolic syndrome (MetS), in which a non-classic feature is an increase in systemic oxidative biomarkers, presents a high risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) is associated with a reduced risk of MetS. However, the effect of the MedDiet on biomarkers for oxidative damage has not been assessed in MetS individuals. We have investigated the effect of the MedDiet on systemic oxidative biomarkers in MetS individuals. Methods Randomized, controlled, parallel clinical trial in which 110 female with MetS, aged 55–80, were recruited into a large trial (PREDIMED Study) to test the efficacy of the traditional MedDie…
Postprandial metabolism: from research to clinical practice.
2013
Over the last decade, the importance of postprandial metabolism has increased, given that it is the physiological state of humans in modern society. Moreover, postprandial lipemia is considered as a key player in the development of the most important cardiometabolic diseases. In this regard, postprandial lipemia has become more important, since it has been demonstrated that nonfasting triglycerides (TGs) are independent predictors of the risk of cardio vascular disease (CVD) [1,2]. Interestingly, the postprandial phase has been associated with increased inflammation and oxidation, which influences vascular function through a permanent endothelial aggression by atherogenic lipoprotein. TGs a…
The impact of occult renal failure on the cardiovascular risk stratification in an elderly population: the PREV-ICTUS study.
2008
To analyze the impact of occult renal failure (ORF) in the individual risk stratification and on the blood pressures (BP) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) goals in an aged population, according to the ESH/ESC Hypertension Guidelines.A cross-sectional, population-based study on individuals aged 60 years or more carried out in Primary Care Centers of Spain. Kidney function was estimated from calculated creatinine clearance (eGFR), Cockroft and Gault formula. Ten-year cardiovascular risk was estimated through the ESH/ESC table including or not including the eGFR. Estimates of the modification in BP and LDL-cholesterol (cLDL) goals were calculated. In 6419 subjects, 4242 subjects (66%) had norm…
Endoscope-assisted microsurgery for cerebral aneurysms.
1999
A total of 66 patients with intracranial aneurysms were endoscopically assisted treated during a 3 years period. Among those were five individuals with giant aneurysms and 27 patients with aneurysms of the posterior circulation. The endoscope was used only for checking the anatomical structures surround the aneurysms in 16 cases. In 43 patients the aneurysm sac was also dissected under endoscopical con-trol. Even the clipping procedure was performed in seven cases exclusively under endoscopical obser-vation. Only one prematural rupture occurred intraoperatively during preparation of a basilar tip aneurysm. Postoperatively three individuals with aneurysms located in the posterior circulation…
Safety and efficacy of MitraClip™ therapy in patients with severely impaired left ventricular ejection fraction: results from the German transcathete…
2017
Aims The aim of the present study was to assess the safety and efficacy of percutaneous mitral valve repair using the MitraClip™ device in patients with severely reduced systolic left ventricular (LV) function. Methods and results Among 777 MitraClip™ implantations included in the German mitral valve registry, we identified 256 patients suffering from severely reduced LV function [ejection fraction (EF) 50%) and 280 patients presenting with an EF 30–50% prior to MitraClip™ therapy. High procedural success rates, low periprocedural complication rates, and low residual mitral regurgitation grades at discharge were achieved throughout all groups. In-hospital mortality was low and comparable in…
Impact of left atrial diameter on outcome in patients undergoing edge-to-edge mitral valve repair: results from the German TRAnscatheter Mitral valve…
2020
Abstract Background Left atrium (LA) dimension is a marker of disease severity and outcome in primary and secondary mitral regurgitation. In transcatheter mitral valve repair LA enlargement might additionally impact on device handling and technical success through an altered anatomy and atrial annular dilatation. Methods Data from the multicenter German transcatheter mitral valve intervention registry “TRAMI” were used to analyse the association of baseline LA diameter by tertiles and efficacy, safety and long-term clinical outcome in patients undergoing edge-to-edge repair with the MitraClip. Results In 520 of 843 patients prospectively enrolled in TRAMI baseline LA diameter were reported …
Mitral valve therapy still surgical?
2015
Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the second most common valvular heart disease after aortic valve stenosis. With increased understanding of the heterogenic pathophysiology of MR, cardiac surgeons have developed various techniques that increase the likelihood of successful mitral valve repair (MVR). Nowadays, a rate of repair >90% may be reached in some mitral valve reference centres. In recent years, the introduction of transcatheter mitral valve intervention techniques has opened up new frontiers in mitral therapy, specifically in patients at high risk for standard surgery. Current percutaneous technologies for MVR have been developed on the basis of some of the surgical principles. Based on c…
Verification of a commercial implementation of the Macro-Monte-Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm using the virtual accelerator approach.
2009
Abstract In this work, the accuracy of the implementation of the Macro Monte Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm into the radiation therapy treatment planning system Eclipse is evaluated. This implementation – called eMC – uses a particle source based on the Rotterdam Initial Phase-Space model. A three-dimensional comparison of eMC calculated dose to dose distributions resulting from full treatment head simulations with the Monte Carlo code package EGSnrc is performed using the ‘virtual accelerator’ approach. Calculated dose distributions are compared for a homogeneous tissue equivalent phantom and a water phantom with air and bone inhomogeneities. The performance of the eMC algorithm…

Objectives While a bidirectional relationship between diabetes and depression has been established, there is little knowledge if the associations are due to somatic-affective or cognitive-affective dimensions of depression.
