Characterization of conservatively resected renal tumors using automated image analysis DNA cytometry

The DNA histograms of 57 conservatively resected renal tumors were studied using automated image analysis DNA cytometry (Leytas II). Forty-nine of the analyzed tumors were renal cell carcinomas, six were oncocytomas, one was an angiomyolipoma, and one was a renal cell adenoma. On the basis of their DNA histograms, diploid, tetraploid, and aneuploid tumors could be distinguished. Aneuploid tumors could be subtyped further according to the DNA content of the stem cell line as hyperdiploid, hypertriploid, or hypertetraploid. The widespread use of abdominal imaging techniques has increased the detection of solid renal masses over the past years. Imaging plays a crucial role in the management and surveillance and in determining which lesions need treatment. The "classical angiomyolipoma" is the only benign solid renal mass that can be characterized with confidence by imaging through the detection of a fat-containing lesion without calcifications. There is a large overlap of imaging features between benign and malignant renal masses that often makes difficult a correct characterization of these lesions. Apoptosis is considered an important mechanism of selective deletion that occurs during hematopoiesis. Myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and hematopoietic cells. The pathogenesis of this benign tumor is still unclear. Analysing the structural levels and apoptosis of normal human bone marrow (NHBM) and human myelolipoma (HM), the apoptotic events resulted abundantly present in NHBM compared to HM, which showed a small number of apoptotic cells. By contrast, Fas expression was strongly present both in NHBM and HM. These findings suggest that an altered function of Fas in myelolipoma is not able to trigger the apoptotic machinery. Three cases with renal angiomyolipoma in Bourneville's disease are reported. In two patients advanced renal insufficiency developed, one being treated by chronic intermittent hemodialysis. In the third patient rupture of angiomyolipoma with severe retroperitoneal bleeding occurred. Abstract Introduction Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is today considered the standard treatment for benign small adrenal tumors. An open question is the use of laparoscopy for large adrenal masses because of technical limitations and increased risk of malignancy. In this study we report our experience in laparoscopic adrenalectomy for adrenal masses larger than 6 cm. Methods Between January 2010 and December 2013 we performed 41 laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
