Simple monoclinic crystal phase in suspensions of hard ellipsoids

2006

We present a computer simulation study on the crystalline phases of hard ellipsoids of revolution. For aspect ratios $\ensuremath{\geqslant}3$ the previously suggested stretched-fcc phase [Frenkel and Mulder, Mol. Phys. 55, 1171 (1985)] is replaced by a different crystalline phase. Its unit cell contains two ellipsoids with unequal orientations. The lattice is simple monoclinic. The angle of inclination of the lattice, $\ensuremath{\beta}$, is a very soft degree of freedom, while the two right angles are stiff. For one particular value of $\ensuremath{\beta}$, the close-packed version of this crystal is a specimen of the family of superdense packings recently reported [Donev et al., Phys. R…

Observation of sequential spin flips in quantum rings

2011

We observe strong signatures of spin flips in quantum rings exposed to external magnetic fields in the Coulomb blockade regime. The signatures appear as a pattern of lines corresponding to local reduction of conductance, and they cover a large range of magnetic fields and number of electrons. The sequence of lines, as well as other features in the conductance, can be captured by many-electron calculations within density-functional theory. The calculations show that most lines in the pattern correspond to sequential spin flips between filling factors 2 and 1. We believe that the ability to probe individual spin flips provides an important step toward precise spin control in quantum ring devi…

Extension of Electron Monte Carlo Dose Calculation in Eclipse to Siemens Linear Accelerators

2009

Initially, the implementation of the macro Monte Carlo (MC) method into Eclipse (Varian Medical Systems), named eMC, was carried out for Varian accelerators only. In this work eMC algorithm has been modified to allow also accurate dose calculations for electron beams for Siemens accelerators.

Absolute parameters for binary systems

1997

New light curves of the late-type binary sys- tem ZZ UMa were obtained during a uvby and H mon- itoring program on low mass eclipsing binaries, that has been carried out in a six year photometric observational program (Clement et al. 1997a, Paper I). The main goal of the program is to obtain accurate absolute parameters for stars in the low and intermediate mass range, in order to improve the Mass-Luminosity Relationship (MLR) at the end of the main sequence. This paper presents a complete analysis of the rst uvby light curves of the late-type detached eclipsing binary ZZ UMa. This binary system has been observed during eight campaigns at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria, Spain). The act…

Mode coupling theory for molecular liquids: What can we learn from a system of hard ellipsoids?

1999

Molecular fluids show rich and complicated dynamics close to the glass transition. Some of these observations are related to the fact that translational and orientational degrees of freedom couple in nontrivial ways. A model system which can serve as a paradigm to understand these couplings is a system of hard ellipsoids of revolution. To test this we compare at the ideal glass transition the static molecular correlators of a linear A-B Lennard-Jones molecule obtained from a molecular dynamics simulation with a selected fluid of hard ellipsoids for which the static correlators have been obtained using Percus-Yevick theory. We also demonstrate that the critical non-ergodicity parameters obta…

The Khuri-Jones Threshold Factor as an Automorphic Function

2013

The Khuri-Jones correction to the partial wave scattering amplitude at threshold is an automorphic function for a dihedron. An expression for the partial wave amplitude is obtained at the pole which the upper half-plane maps on to the interior of semi-infinite strip. The Lehmann ellipse exists below threshold for bound states. As the system goes from below to above threshold, the discrete dihedral (elliptic) group of Type 1 transforms into a Type 3 group, whose loxodromic elements leave the fixed points 0 and $\infty$ invariant. The transformation of the indifferent fixed points from -1 and +1 to the source-sink fixed points 0 and $\infty$ is the result of a finite resonance width in the im…

Anisotropy in strain gradient elasticity: Simplified models with different forms of internal length and moduli tensors

2018

Abstract Anisotropy of centro-symmetric (first) strain gradient elastic materials is addressed and the role there played by the dual gradient directions (i.e. directions of strain gradient and of double stress lever arm) is investigated. Anisotropy manifests itself not only through the classical fourth-rank elasticity tensor C (21 independent constants) in the form of moduli anisotropy, but also through a sixth-rank elasticity tensor B (171 independent constants) in a unified non-separable form as compound internal length/moduli anisotropy. Depending on the microstructure properties, compound anisotropy may also manifest itself in a twofold separable form through a decoupled tensor B = L C …

SU-GG-T-227: Dynamic IMRT Split Beam Technique Verification Using EPID Based Dosimetry

2010

Purpose: On dynamic IMRT plans with Millenium 80 (Varian) fields wider of 15 cm must be splitted. Since the EPIDdosimetry software does not allow to sum splitted subfluences in the same dosimetric portal image they have to be measured separately and compared independently with the subfluences previously calculated by the TPS Eclipse. The purpose of our work is the development of a tool to: 1) analyze the correct match between the two abutted ports for splitted fields. 2) study the effect of gravity and analyze repercussions of possible misalignments and 3) illustrate that the gamma evaluation should be made with the global summed fluence per field instead of with the individual subfluences.…

Analytical solution for the solid angle subtended at any point by an ellipse via a point source radiation vector potential

2010

An axially symmetric radiation vector potential is derived for a spherically symmetric point source. This vector potential is used to derive a line integral for the solid angle subtended at a point source by a detector of arbitrary shape and location. An equivalent line integral given previously by Asvestas for optical applications is derived using this formulation. The line integral can be evaluated in closed form for important cases, and the analytical solution for the solid angle subtended by an ellipse at a general point is presented. The solution for the ellipse was obtained by considering sections of a right elliptic cone. The general solution for the ellipse requires the solution of …

Stability of solid T2 films

1990

Abstract Films of molecular tritium, physisorbed on a cold substrate, have been investigated by means of ellipsometry. A significant effect of the radioactive decay processes on the desorption kinetics and the low temperature stability of these films is not observed.
