Overdamped dynamics of paramagnetic ellipsoids in a precessing magnetic field

2009

We report on the dynamical behavior of paramagnetic ellipsoidal particles dispersed in water and floating above a flat plane when subjected to an external precessing magnetic field. When the magnetic field and the long axis of the particles are on the same plane, two clear regimes are distinguished in which the particles follow the magnetic modulation synchronously or asynchronously. Both regimes are also observed when the field precesses at an angle $\ensuremath{\vartheta}l90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ with respect to the normal to the confining plane, while the transition frequency increases with decreasing precession angle. We combine experimental observations with a theoretical…

Electron-gas clusters: the ultimate jellium model

1995

The local spin-density approximation is used to calculate ground- and isomeric-state geometries of jellium clusters with 2 to 22 electrons. The positive background charge of the model is completely deformable, both in shape and in density. The model has no input parameters. The resulting shapes of the clusters exhibit breaking of axial and inversion symmetries; in general the shapes are far from ellipsoidal. Those clusters which lack inversion symmetry are extremely soft against odd-multipole deformations. Some clusters can be interpreted as molecules built from magic clusters. The deformation produces a gap at the Fermi level. This results in a regular odd-even staggering of the total ener…

Dynamics of Uniaxial Hard Ellipsoids

2007

We study the dynamics of monodisperse hard ellipsoids via a new event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm as a function of volume fraction $\phi$ and aspect ratio $X_0$. We evaluate the translational $D_{trans}$ and the rotational $D_{rot}$ diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the $\phi-X_0$ plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the $D_{trans}$ and $D_{rot}$ isodiffusivity lines. While the self intermediate scattering function exhibits stretched relaxation, i.e. glassy dynamics, only for large $\phi$ and $X_0 \approx 1$, the second order orientational correlator $C_2(t)$ sho…

Resolving the Fe xx v Triplet with Chan d r a in Centaurus X-3

2005

We present the results of a 45 ks Chandra observation of the high-mass X-ray binary Cen X-3 at orbital phases between 0.13 and 0.40 (in the eclipse post-egress phases). Here we concentrate on the study of discrete features in the energy spectrum at energies between 6 and 7 keV, that is, on the iron Kα line region, using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on board the Chandra satellite. We clearly see a Kα neutral iron line at ~6.40 keV and were able to distinguish the three lines of the Fe XXV triplet at 6.61, 6.67, and 6.72 keV, with equivalent widths of 6, 9, and 5 eV, respectively. The equivalent width of the Kα neutral iron line is 13 eV, an order of magnitude low…

Accurate Period Determination of an Eclipsing Binary X-Ray Source in M33

1993

We have analyzed the time variability of one of the X-ray sources in M33 observed by both the ROSAT and Einstein Observatory telescopes. The light curve of M33 X-7 exhibits a variability pattern of high and low states, suggesting an eclipsing binary X-ray source. The data suggest a binary period P=1.78572 days (very close to that of Her X-1) and an eclipse duration of ∼0.4 days. The low phase lasts about one-fourth of the period as in Cen X-3

X-Ray Eclipse Time Delays in 4U2129+47

2007

4U 2129+47 was discovered in the early 80's and classified as an accretion disk corona source due to its broad and partial X-ray eclipses. The 5.24 hr binary orbital period was inferred from the X-ray and optical light curve modulation, implying a late K or M spectral type companion star. The source entered a low state in 1983, during which the optical modulation disappeared and an F8 IV star was revealed, suggesting that 4U 2129+47 might be part of a triple system. The nature of 4U 2129+47 has since been investigated, but no definitive conclusion has been reached. Here, we present timing and spectral analyses of two XMM-Newton observations of this source, carried out in May and June, 2005.…

Molecular correlation functions for uniaxial ellipsoids in the isotropic state

2006

We perform event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed by uniaxial hard ellipsoids for different values of the aspect-ratio and packing fraction . We compare the molecular orientational-dependent structure factors previously calculated within the Percus-Yevick approximation with the numerical results. The agreement between theoretical and numerical results is rather satisfactory. We also show that, for specific orientational quantities, the molecular structure factors are sensitive to the particle shape and can be used to distinguish prolate from oblate ellipsoids. A first-order theoretical expansion around the spherical shape and a geometrical analysis of the configura…

Application of optical tomography for measurements of aeration parameters in large water tanks

2003

The paper presents a design and application study of a prototype optical tomograph for the detection and definition of shapes of gas bubbles moving in a liquid. In the applied method of measurements, the column is exposed to a homogeneous light beam and next the ray is detected with the use of optical waveguided detectors. Spatial reconstruction of the bubble shapes is done on the basis of the signals coming from two perpendicular systems of detectors. The bubble shape is approximated by an ellipsoid with suitably determined semi-axes and with the use of genetic algorithms based on the neuron network. Influence of the structure and dynamics of the measuring path on errors in representation …

Event-Driven Simulation of the Dynamics of Hard Ellipsoids

2008

We introduce a novel algorithm to perform event-driven simulations of hard rigid bodies of arbitrary shape, that relies on the evaluation of the geometric distance. In the case of a monodisperse system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids,we perform molecular dynamics simulations varying the aspect-ratio X0 and the packing fraction phi. We evaluate the translational Dtrans and the rotational Drot diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi-X0 plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the Dtrans and Drot isodiffusivity lines. While the self intermediate scattering function exhibits stret…

Exact Voronoi diagram of smooth convex pseudo-circles: General predicates, and implementation for ellipses

2013

International audience; We examine the problem of computing exactly the Voronoi diagram (via the dual Delaunay graph) of a set of, possibly intersecting, smooth convex \pc in the Euclidean plane, given in parametric form. Pseudo-circles are (convex) sites, every pair of which has at most two intersecting points. The Voronoi diagram is constructed incrementally. Our first contribution is to propose robust and efficient algorithms, under the exact computation paradigm, for all required predicates, thus generalizing earlier algorithms for non-intersecting ellipses. Second, we focus on \kcn, which is the hardest predicate, and express it by a simple sparse $5\times 5$ polynomial system, which a…
