Kulturowe obrazy epidemii i wizje świata „od nowa”
2022
This article seeks to describe the social and cultural changes in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The (post)pandemic landscape turned out to materialise the long-felt visions – dystopias. The metaphors of alienation and exile have proven dramatically real in the age of the general (self-)isolation. Particularly interesting are the social reactions to ‘new’ threats: from epidemic denialism and scepticism to epidemic panic. The biological cataclysm has triggered an avalanche of social antagonisms, contradicting the optimistic (and, it appears, naïve) thesis about the democratic nature of the disease/epidemic. In the context of the events observed since 2020, one may wonder why the wor…
Solvability of a first order system in three-dimensional non-smooth domains
1985
summary:A system of first order partial differential equations is studied which is defined by the divergence and rotation operators in a bounded nonsmooth domain $\Omega\subset \bold R^3$. On the boundary $\delta\Omega$, the vanishing normal component is prescribed. A variational formulation is given and its solvability is investigated.
Scattering and point spectra for elliptic systems in domains with cylindrical ends
2004
Viktor Kalvinen tieteellisen laskennan alaan kuuluva väitöskirjatutkimus käsittelee elliptisiä reuna-arvotehtäviä sylinteripäisissä alueissa. Sylinteripäinen alue mallitetaan työssä eräänlaisena aaltoputkena, johon tulee ja josta lähtee erilaisia aaltoja. Näiden aaltojen amplitudi voi kasvaa eksponentiaalisesti kohti ääretöntä. Kalvine on kehittänyt tutkimuksessaan ns. augmentoidun sirontamatriisin, joka perinteisiin sirontamatriiseihin verrattuna kykenee käsittelemään myös amplitudiltaan eksponentiaalisesti muuttuvia aaltoja. Työssä esitellään myös numeerinen menetelmä kyseisen sirontamatriisin laskemiseksi. In the thesis we consider dissipative elliptic boundary value problems in domains …
Two examples related to conical energies
2022
In a recent article we introduced and studied conical energies. We used them to prove three results: a characterization of rectifiable measures, a characterization of sets with big pieces of Lipschitz graphs, and a sufficient condition for boundedness of nice singular integral operators. In this note we give two examples related to sharpness of these results. One of them is due to Joyce and M\"{o}rters, the other is new and could be of independent interest as an example of a relatively ugly set containing big pieces of Lipschitz graphs.
Continuity and Discontinuity of Sport and Exercise Type During the COVID-19 Pandemic : An Exploratory Study of Effects on Mood
2020
Involvement in sport and exercise not only provides participants with health benefits but can be an important aspect of living a meaningful life. The COVID-19 pandemic and the temporary cessation of public life in March/April/May 2020 came with restrictions, which probably also made it difficult, if not impossible, to participate in certain types of sport or exercise. Following the philosophical position that different types of sport and exercise offer different ways of “relating to the world,” this study explored (dis)continuity in the type of sport and exercise people practiced during the pandemic-related lockdown, and possible effects on mood. Data from a survey of 601 adult exercisers, …
Verification of a commercial implementation of the Macro-Monte-Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm using the virtual accelerator approach.
2009
Abstract In this work, the accuracy of the implementation of the Macro Monte Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm into the radiation therapy treatment planning system Eclipse is evaluated. This implementation – called eMC – uses a particle source based on the Rotterdam Initial Phase-Space model. A three-dimensional comparison of eMC calculated dose to dose distributions resulting from full treatment head simulations with the Monte Carlo code package EGSnrc is performed using the ‘virtual accelerator’ approach. Calculated dose distributions are compared for a homogeneous tissue equivalent phantom and a water phantom with air and bone inhomogeneities. The performance of the eMC algorithm…
Repair of a spinal pseudomeningocele in a delayed postsurgical cerebrospinal fluid leak using titanium U-clips: Technical note
2020
Abstract Introduction Chronic cerebrospinal fluid leak (CCFL) represents a possible event following spine surgery, with an incidence rate ranging from 5 to 18%. In literature have been reported few modification techniques that involved the use of titanium U-clips with the aim to reduce dural traumatism during its closure but only after non-accidental durotomy. Case illustration We report the case of a 47-year-old female with history of L5-S1 microsurgical discectomy. After one year the patient was admitted to our unit because she presented progressive skin swelling in the lumbar region, intermittent headache and recurrent episodes of lipothymia. One-year MRI showed a voluminous subcutaneous…
Orthogonal switching of AMS axes during type-2 fold interference : Insights from integrated X-ray computed tomography, AMS and 3D petrography
2017
We applied X-ray computed microtomography (μ-CT) in combination with anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis to study metamorphic rock fabrics in an oriented drill core sample of pyrite-pyrrhotite-quartz-mica schist. The sample is extracted from the Paleoproterozoic Martimo metasedimentary belt of northern Finland. The μ-CT resolves the spatial distribution, shape and orientation of 25,920 pyrrhotite and 153 pyrite grains localized in mm-thick metapelitic laminae. Together with microstructural analysis, the μ-CT allows us to interpret the prolate symmetry of the AMS ellipsoid and its relationship to the deformation history. AMS of the sample is controlled by pyrrhotite porphyro…

Digi-sosiaalinen nuoriso ja musiikki : digitaalisen median vaikutukset nuorten musiikin kuunteluun
2016
Tutkimukseni tavoitteena on tarkastella, miten digitaalinen media vaikuttaa nuorten musiikin kuunteluun. Käsittelen aihetta tutkimalla kuuntelulähteiden ja kuunteluun saatavien idealähteiden suosiota. Lisäksi selvitän digitaalisen median ominaisuuksien käyttöä ja tutkin verkon sosiaalisten piirteiden liittymistä musiikin kuunteluun. Tutkimukseni on määrällinen Survey-tutkimus, jonka tavoitteena on kerätä tietoa suurehkosta määrästä edustavalla näytteellä. Keräsin tutkimusaineistoni kyselylomakkeella 154:lle seitsemäsluokkalaiselle yläkoululaiselle maaliskuussa 2015. Lomake oli pääosin strukturoitu, ja siihen vastattiin anonyymisti. Analysoin aineistoani tilastollisesti kuvaavana tarkastelem…
