Ultrastructural Alterations of Midgut Epithelium, but Not Greater Wing Fluctuating Asymmetry, in Paper Wasps (Polistes dominula) from Urban Environme…
2018
Polistes paper wasps can be used to monitor trace metal contaminants, but the effects of pollution on the health of these insects are still unknown. We evaluated, in a south-eastern area of Spain, whether workers of Polistes dominula collected at urban and rural sites differ in health of midgut tissue and in fluctuating asymmetry, an estimate of developmental noise. We found that wasps collected at the urban sites had abundant lead (Pb)-containing spherites, which were less visible in wasps from the rural sites. Evident ultrastructural alterations in the epithelium of the midgut of the wasps collected at the urban sites included broken and disorganized microvilli, a high amount and density …
Caco-2 Invasion by Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella enterica Exposed to Drying and Heat Treatments in Dried State in Milk Powder
2017
International audience; Due to the ability of foodborne pathogens to survive in low moisture food, the decontamination of milk powder is an important issue in food protection. The safety of food products is, however, not always insured and the different steps in the processing of food involve physiological and metabolic changes in bacteria. Among these changes, virulence properties may also be affected. In this study, the effect of drying and successive thermal treatments on the invasion capacity of Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Senftenberg, and Cronobacter sakazakii was assessed. Bacteria were dried on milk powder at three different water activity levels (0.25, 0.58, and 0.80) and hea…
Multi-criteria framework as an innovative tradeoff approach to determine the shelf-life of high pressure-treated poultry
2016
International audience; A multi-criteria framework combining safety, hygiene and sensorial quality was developed to investigate the possibility of extending the shelf-life and/or removing lactate by applying High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) in a ready-to-cook (RTC) poultry product. For this purpose, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes were considered as safety indicators and Escherichia coli as hygienic indicator. Predictive modeling was used to determine the influence of HHP and lactate concentration on microbial growth and survival of these indicators. To that end, probabilistic assessment exposure models developed in a previous study (Lerasle, M., Guillou, S., Simonin, H., Anthoine, V.,…
Postpartum listeria meningitis
2020
Highlights • Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of meningitis in immunocompetent patient. • Pregnancy and puerperium are accompanied by a decrease in cellular immunity. • Pregnancy and puerperium should be considered as risk factors for invasive listeriosis.
Retrospective study on the hygienic quality of fresh ricotta cheeses produced in Sicily, Italy
2018
The present work was carried out to investigate the microbiological profile of Sicilian ewes’ ricotta cheeses during fifteen years of investigations (2002-2016). The samples were collected between those conferred to the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sicilia (IZSSi) Adelmo Mirri, Palermo (Italy), by the competent authority during official control, by food business operator in HACCP systems and in research projects. Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli and coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS) were found only in some samples. Bacillus cereus was detected in c.a. 16% of samples but the level of contaminations did not reach the threshold that leads to significant toxin production…
Formation and Characterization of Early Bacterial Biofilms on Different Wood Typologies Applied in Dairy Production
2018
ABSTRACT The main hypothesis of this work was that Sicilian forestry resources are suitable for the production of equipment to be used in cheese making and indigenous milk lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are able to develop stable biofilms providing starter and nonstarter cultures necessary for curd fermentation and cheese ripening, respectively. Hence, the present work was carried out with deproteinized whey to evaluate LAB biofilm formation on different woods derived from tree species grown in Sicily. Microbiological and scanning electron microscopy analyses showed minimal differences in microbial levels and compositions for the neoformed biofilms. The specific investigation of Salmonella spp.…
Influence d'humidité de l'air sur le séchage d'une goutte déposée sur une surface solide et sur la destruction microbienne.
2017
International audience; This study was carried out in order to develop experimental methodology using a camera to monitor the evolution of the surface of a liquid droplet deposited on a solid surface composed of polypropylene. The droplet was exposed to various ambient relative humidity conditions (11.3%, 43.2%, 68.9% and 75.5%). Two types of liquid were investigated: distilled water and water containing nutritive substances (salmon “juice”). At 11.3% relative humidity, it takes 40% longer to evaporate a water droplet (initial weight 0.36 g, volume 360 μL, radius 6.5 × 10−3 m) than a salmon “juice” droplet (3.66 h for distilled water, 2.83 h for salmon “juice”). In the case of the distilled…
Biopreservation potential of lactic acid bacteria from Andean fermented food of vegetal origin
2017
Abstract Microbial fermentations have long represented a way of natural biopreservation of raw materials, which frequently originated new food products. Among them, traditionally fermented products still manufactured by native populations all around the world are source of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains with high biotechnological potential. LAB are food grade microorganisms and therefore a good alternative to chemicals to be applied in food preservation. A total of 130 LAB isolates recovered from “chicha” and “tocosh”, traditional fermented Andean products of vegetal origin, were screened for antimicrobial activities against spoiler fungi Meyerozyma guilliermondii CECT 1021 (synonym Pic…
Prevalence of Listeria spp. and characterization of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from food products in Tetouan, Morocco
2018
A total of 1096 food samples were purchased in Tetouan, North-Western of Morocco, to examine the presence of Listeria spp. Eighty (7.3%) of the tested samples were found positive for the presence of Listeria spp., while L. monocytogenes was detected in 16 (1.5%) samples. L. monocytogenes isolates belonged to clonal complexes CC2 (PCR serogroup IVb) and CC199 (PCR serogroup Ila) and to 8 different combined AscI/Apal pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles. Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) allowed to distinguish 12 different cgMLST types and revealed the presence of 3 clusters of closely-related isolates from different samples, suggesting the existence of common sources of co…
Music style not only modulates the auditory cortex, but also motor related areas
2021
The neuroscience of music has recently attracted significant attention, but the effect of music style on the activation of auditory-motor regions has not been explored. The aim of the present study is to analyze the differences in brain activity during passive listening to non-vocal excerpts of four different music genres (classical, reggaeton, electronic and folk). A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment was performed. Twenty-eight participants with no musical training were included in the study. They had to passively listen to music excerpts of the above genres during fMRI acquisition. Imaging analysis was performed at the whole-brain-level and in auditory-motor regions …
