Control of biofilm formation by poly-ethylene-co-vinyl acetate films incorporating nisin.

2010

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of poly-ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) films incorporating different concentrations (0.1%, 0.5% and 1%) of nisin on the biofilm-forming ability of Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644, Staphylococcus aureus 815 and Staphylococ-cus epidermidis ATCC 35984. Nisin was incorporated into two grades of EVA (EVA14 and EVA28) in the melt during a common film-blowing operation. The efficacy of EVA/nisin films was evaluated by biofilm biomass measurements and Live/Dead staining in combination with fluorescence microscopy. In order to evaluate whether the nisin incorporation could modify the film surface properties, contact angle measurements and scanning e…

A stochastic interspecific competition model to predict the behaviour of Listeria monocytogenes in the fermentation process of a traditional Sicilian…

2008

The present paper discusses the use of modified Lotka-Volterra equations in order to stochastically simulate the behaviour of Listeria monocytogenes and Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) during the fermentation period (168 h) of a typical Sicilian salami. For this purpose, the differential equation system is set considering T, pH and aw as stochastic variables. Each of them is governed by dynamics that involve a deterministic linear decrease as a function of the time t and an "additive noise" term which instantaneously mimics the fluctuations of T, pH and aw. The choice of a suitable parameter accounting for the interaction of LAB on L. monocytogenes as well as the introduction of appropriate nois…

What Would a Unified Field of Listening Look Like? A Proposal Linking Past Perspectives and Future Endeavors

2008

Most reviews of “listening research” are narrow in scope, focusing only on research published by listening and communication scholars. Given that unique contributions to listening have been provided by scholars from disciplines as varied as psychology, anthropology, management, and linguistics, this review explores connections and divergences that span the academic landscape. After briefly introducing and reviewing listening related research from three primary areas—information processing, competent behavior, and individual differences—we offer a heuristic framework that ties these lines of study together and provides a structure for assessing and generating new listening research. A conclu…

Unveiling the needs of students who stutter in the language skills - a study on anxiety and stuttering in EFL learning

2019

The aim of this study is to discuss the needs of learners who stutter (LWS) in the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning based on their levels of anxiety, and their experiences as individuals who stutter in the process of learning this language. To this end, the anxiety of these students (n = 16) in the foreign language was measured using the Foreign language classroom anxiety scale (FLCAS), and the Specific language skills anxiety scale (SLSAS), whilst their experiences were elicited through semi-structured interviews. Their foreign language anxiety (FLA) levels were then compared to those obtained from a control group of non-st…

Naiset suomalaisten listayhtiöiden hallituksissa

2012

Naisten määrä pörssiyhtiöiden hallituksissa on alhainen lähes kaikkialla maailmassa. Poikkeus on Norja, jossa lainsäädäntö määrää, että molempien sukupuolten edustus listattujen yritysten hallituksissa on oltava 40 %. Naisten määrän lisäämistä hallituksissa pidetään tärkeänä, sillä tutkimusten mukaan yhtiöt, joiden hallituksissa on naisia, saavuttavat parempia tuloksia. Perimmiltään kysymys on kuitenkin eettinen tasa-arvokysymys. Naisten määrän lisäämiseksi suomalaisten yritysten hallituksissa on kaksi vaihtoehtoa; kiintiö Norjan tapaan tai vapaaehtoinen, listayhtiöiden hallinnointikoodin mukainen naisjäsenten nimittäminen hallituksiin. Naisten määrä suomalaisissa hallituksissa on kuitenkin…

Ecosystem of Social Media Listening Practices for Crisis Management

2021

The benefits of using social media data as a source of information are recognized by both practice and research in crisis management. However, the existing understanding on the matter is fragmented, it oscillates between techno-determinisms and socio-determinisms, which does not provide a holistic picture. In this paper we argue that to better adapt social media data use practices, an ecosystem perspective is needed. In doing so, we conducted a systematic literature review and identified the various entities and their interrelationships that configure the practices of social media listening for crisis management. Then, we summarize our findings by proposing a conceptual ecosystem of practic…

IL-23 receptor regulates unconventional IL-17-producing T cells that control bacterial infections.

2010

AbstractIL-23 plays an important role in autoimmune tissue inflammation and induces the generation of not fully characterized effector cells that mediate protection against pathogens. In this paper, we established the essential role of IL-23R in the host response against intracellular pathogens. IL-23 was critical for the expansion or maintenance of γδ and double negative (DN) αβ T cells. These cells were rapidly recruited to the site of infection and produced large amounts of IL-17, IFN-γ, and TNF-α. Notably, DN T cells transferred into L. monocytogenes-infected RAG2−/− mice prevented bacterial growth, confirming their protective role against intracellular pathogens. Our results show that …

Liver-primed memory T cells generated under noninflammatory conditions provide anti-infectious immunity.

2013

SummaryDevelopment of CD8+ T cell (CTL) immunity or tolerance is linked to the conditions during T cell priming. Dendritic cells (DCs) matured during inflammation generate effector/memory T cells, whereas immature DCs cause T cell deletion/anergy. We identify a third outcome of T cell priming in absence of inflammation enabled by cross-presenting liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. Such priming generated memory T cells that were spared from deletion by immature DCs. Similar to central memory T cells, liver-primed T cells differentiated into effector CTLs upon antigen re-encounter on matured DCs even after prolonged absence of antigen. Their reactivation required combinatorial signaling thro…

Editorial: Activation, functions, and generation of immunological memory in γδ T lymphocytes: lessons from nonhuman primates

2014

T cells constitute an unconventional lymphocyte population with distinct functions complementary to those of CD4 and CD8 T cells. As such, they have both adaptive features, such as expression of the TCR, and innate-like functions reminiscent of NK cells, with whom they share extensive repertoires of activating and inhibitory receptors [1, 2]. Although most antigens recognized by murine T cells remain obscure, advances have been made in identifying ligands for human T cells. The majority of circulating human T lymphocytes expresses a TCR formed by the preferentially-paired V 9 and V 2 chains (here and thereafter, called V 9V 2 T cells). Instead of binding peptides associated with molecules b…

Polyphasic Characterization of Microbiota of “Mastredda”, a Traditional Wooden Tool Used during the Production of PDO Provola dei Nebrodi Cheese

2021

The biofilms of the wooden tables used for the acidification of the curd were investigated for PDO Provola dei Nebrodi cheese, a traditional stretched cheese made in eastern Sicily (southern Italy) from raw cows’ milk. To this purpose the wooden tables of four dairy facilities were analysed for their microbiota by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and a combined culture-independent and -dependent microbiological approach. SEM inspection showed an almost continuous biofilm formation. MiSeq Illumina analysis identified 8 phyla, 16 classes, 25 orders, 47 families and 50 genera. Corynebacterium, Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were detected in all samples. In particular…
