The relative relationship between education and workplace task discretion: an international comparative perspective

2019

International audience; Through analyses of Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) data, the following study considers the direct and indirect association between education and workplace task discretion in 30 countries. By focusing on cross-national comparison, it considers the ways in which these findings are dependent on both the overall level and the range of task discretion across occupational sectors within a country. Theoretically, individual-agency and critical-institutional hypotheses are compared, two perspectives that provide divergent explanations for the indirect association between education and task discretion. The findings partially support b…

It is therefore important to study the role of the principal and how the principal can facilitate student achievement. The aim of the research study is to carry out a comparative analysis of data from several countries to find out the factors associated with the activities of the principal (directions of professional activity, factors created by the school culture and environment) that facilitate high achievemen…

2017

With this contribution I would like to present the results of an action research project conducted in Palermo by the pedagogical team at the Department of Psychology and Education Sciences between 2010 and 2012. The usage of social media among young adults living in Nairobi, Kenya : only entertainment or contributions to societal change?

2015

Social media usage has been found to have increased all over the world, also in the so-called developing countries. Although the percentages are still rather low, it can be argued that the use of social media is becoming increasingly important also in African countries. Kenya has been found to be one of the leading countries regarding social media usage in East Africa. Although research on social media has been conducted, for instance, on the use of social media in protest movements and in the areas of users’ motivation, less emphasis has been placed on their developmental aspects. Thus, to gain a deeper understanding of the usage of social media in the so-called developing countries, this …

Task persistence mediates the effect of children’s literacy skills on mothers’ academic help

2015

This longitudinal study aimed at examining the relationship between children's task persistence, mothers' academic help, and the development of children’s literacy skills (reading and spelling) at the beginning of primary school. The participants were 870 children, 682 mothers, and 53 class teachers. Data were collected three times – at the beginning and the end of Grade 1 and at the end of Grade 2. Better literacy skills predicted higher persistence in completing school tasks and, correspondingly, higher persistence was related to better subsequent skills. Also, lower task persistence at the end of Grade 1 corresponded to more frequent academic help from mothers in Grade 2. Moreover, child…
