Migrants and Literacy Crises
2011
International comparisons of levels of literacy have in some countries been interpreted as an indication of a prevailing literacy crisis that demands political actions to avoid negative impact on national competitiveness, democracy, and coherence. Special attention is focused in the Danish crisis discourse on literacy as a reading competence and on migrants who, in particular, have become symbols of the crisis. In this article, the values and beliefs embedded in the political actions taken in the wake of the literacy crisis are analysed and the implications of the functionally based discursive construction of the literacy crisis for migrants are discussed. Based on an understanding of liter…
Liikunta terveyden edistäjänä lukion terveystiedon oppikirjoissa
2015
Fyysisellä aktiivisuudella on myönteisiä vaikutuksia fyysiseen, psyykkiseen ja sosiaaliseen terveyteen. Siten liikunnan harrastaminen on terveyttä merkittävästi edistävä elämäntapa. Nuorten kunto on heikentynyt ja elintapoihin liittyvien sairauksien määrä kasvanut. Tutkimukset osoittavat, että lapsena ja nuorena fyysisesti aktiivisesti elänyt ihminen on todennäköisesti aikuisenakin aktiivinen. Näiden seikkojen perusteella on tärkeää, että nuorten liikuntaan liittyvää terveysosaamista kehitetään peruskoulun jälkeenkin toisen asteen koulutuksessa. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli tarkastella liikuntaan liittyvän terveysosaaminen kehittämistä lukion terveystiedossa. Tutkimusaineisto koostui kuuden op…
Challenges Associated with Reading Acquisition in Sub-Saharan Africa : Promotion of Literacy in Multilingual Contexts
2019
Heikki Lyytinen and his co-authors note the problems of poorly trained teachers and large class sizes in Africa. Drawing on experience in Zambia, they present a case study of a digital game that can help overcome these problems and lead to more effective literacy instruction, particularly for students facing barriers to learning how to read. peerReviewed

Health literacy among adolescents : summary of some key findings from ten European countries
2022
Abstract Introduction In research on disparities, the concept of health literacy (HL) as a set of competencies to promote and sustain health may help in understanding the disparities better and in addressing avoidable and unfair health disparities. Methods Data consisted of cross-sectional data from Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study from year 2017/18 of ten European countries (Austria, Belgium (Fl), Czechia, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Macedonia, Poland, and Slovakia). Historical literacy and contradictory evidence in Finnish high school setting : The Bronzen Soldier of Tallinn
2016
This article revolves around three key issues. First, over the last 30 years, the traditional approach to history teaching as memorization of facts and chains of events has been changing. Currently, the Finnish national core curriculum fixes the focus of history teaching on students’ critical and historical thinking skills. However, the curriculum leaves a lot of maneuvering scope for schools and individual teachers, but teachers seemingly still emphasize content over skills with too little focus on historical thinking skills. Second, Finland has so far been lacking in research on students’ historical thinking skills, even if they have been adopted as an important part of the curriculum. Wh…
Narrative inquiry and historical skills. A study in teacher training
2017
This paper addresses narrative thinking and literacy levels in future primary school teachers in Spain. It uses the study of a historical synthesis of one of the main narratives in Spanish history: the Christian expansion through Muslim territories in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. Accounts by 283 students of the degree in elementary school teaching at the universities of Valencia and Murcia were studied. The aim was to ascertain the students' discursive abilities with respect to their historical thinking skills. The results reveal poor narrative skills in future teachers and a very low level of historical literacy.
The home literacy model in a highly transparent orthography
2019
We investigated the extent to which home literacy activities during the preschool year would predict the development of children’s language and literacy skills in primary school, in a highly transparent Finnish language. Also, the correlates of maternal literacy activities during preschool were examined. Literacy and language skills of 1,880 children (6-year-olds at the baseline) were tested at 5 time points from the beginning of preschool to the end of Year 2; mothers filled in questionnaires at the end of preschool. The results showed that home teaching of reading at preschool age predicted children’s emergent literacy (letter knowledge, word reading fluency) in primary school, while shar…
Household Budget Management and Financial Behaviour of the Italian Family in Times of Crisis*
2023
Why are Italians at the bottom of international rankings on financial literacy? Why do they fail to make speculative financial choices and have a marked aptitude for precautionary saving? Using a Weberian perspective on household “budget management” [haushalt] and analysing the results of recent research (e.g. OECD, CONSOB and Bank of Italy), the authors argue that there are always “good reasons” and thus specific rationality that encourages people to save and reject financial speculation. This economic choice emanates from cognitive bias, financial socialisation, financial literacy, and environmental conditions. The hypothesis is that Italian households demonstrate a weaker attitude toward…
