Promoting 21st Century Literacy Education in Zambia
2015
The aim of the project CAPOLSA (Centre for Promotion of Literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa) was to establish a strong literacy centre at the University of Zambia (UNZA). The long-term goal is to have international visibility and impact, specifically in African countries facing similar challenges to Zambia. This literacy training approach is based on the Grapho Learning Initiative and the innovative and efficient digital-based learning game, GraphoGame, that has been developed based on scientific studies led by Professor Heikki Lyytinen at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU). He was the responsible project leader, together with Professor Robert Serpell at UNZA. The project implementation period wa…
Physical literacy in Europe : The current state of implementation in research, practice, and policy
2023
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The holistic concept of physical literacy (PL) embraces different person-centered qualities (physical, cognitive, affective/psychological) necessary to lead physically active lifestyles. PL has recently gained increasing attention globally and Europe is no exception. However, scientific endeavors summarizing the current state of PL in Europe are lacking. Therefore, the goal of this study was to comprehensively assess and compare the implementation of PL in research, policy, and practice across the continent.METHODS: We assembled a panel of experts representing 25 European countries. Employing a complementary mixed-methods design, the experts first prepared reviews abou…
Development of Numeracy and Literacy Skills in Early Childhood—A Longitudinal Study on the Roles of Home Environment and Familial Risk for Reading an…
2021
This study examines the direct and indirect effects of home numeracy and literacy environment, and parental factors (parental reading and math difficulties, and parental education) on the development of several early numeracy and literacy skills. The 265 participating Finnish children were assessed four times between ages 2.5 and 6.5. Children’s skills in counting objects, number production, number sequence knowledge, number symbol knowledge, number naming, vocabulary, print knowledge, and letter knowledge were assessed individually. Parents (N = 202) reported on their education level, learning difficulties in math and reading (familial risk, FR), and home learning environment separately fo…
Reciprocal associations between social competence and language and pre-literacy skills in preschool
2018
The present study examined reciprocal associations between children’s social competence and language and pre-literacy skills across the preschool year. Participants were 441 children (six-year-olds; 212 boys, 229 girls) and their teachers. Teachers rated children’s social competence in the autumn and again in the spring, using the Multisource Assessment of Social Competence Scale (MASCS), which produced sum scores for cooperating skills, empathy, impulsivity and disruptiveness. Children were tested by trained investigators on their pre-literacy skills in both the autumn and the spring, and, only in the spring, also on their receptive vocabulary. Parental education, each child’s age and time…
Learning through video blogs
2019
Previous research have found evidences of both, low traditional literacy skills (e.g. reading) and low digital literacy skills (computers and Internet skills) in the population of young students with intellectual disabilities ID). The main goal of this study was to test if learning content in the Internet was enhanced or interfered by video blog presentation mode for this population. In particular, we explored the metacognitive deficit hypothesis by Ackerman & Goldsmith [1] which predicts that a) monitoring accuracy (difference between predicted and actual comprehension) will be lower in videos than in texts; b) restudy decisions will be more efficient in the text medium (i.e. higher restud…

How Islamic are young Muslim people’s poems?
2019
In this article, I investigate poetry written by two young Muslim people during their spare time. Adopting Shahab Ahmed’s (2016) understanding of Islamic in its plenitude and complexity, I ask how Islamic their texts are. The participants, Neda and Mohammed (both pseudonyms), grew up in Islamic countries where they were socialised in faith literacy practices, including practices around sacred and devotional texts, before moving to Norway in their teens. The data used for this article were collected during two linguistic ethnographies and include poems written in and outside of school, fieldnotes from classroom observations and transcripts from multiple semi-structured interviews. The interv…
