Policy Brief: Dialogue, Argumentation, and Creative Practices as Tools in Cultural Literacy Learning in Europe
2021
One of the greatest challenges in today’s European societies is the polarization of societal groups and opinions. Attempts to tackle this challenge need to start from children and young people. Cultural literacy learning is a key to advance tolerant, empathetic, and inclusive attitudes towards diversity and differences. It is important that the EU strengthens its current education initiatives and policies and creates new ones emphasizing cultural literacy learning based on dialogue and argumentation as core skills for participating in a pluralistic society. These initiatives and policies should recognize creative practices as an effective arena for teaching empathy. The EU’s education polic…

Young People's Emerging Multilingual Practices : Learning Language or Literacy, or Both?
2019
Research on language learning and research on literacy are typically seen as two separate strands of enquiry and thus the concepts of language and literacy have traditionally been kept apart. This is partly due to epistemological questions related to language and literacy. In this chapter, I will discuss these concepts in the context of multilingualism. Approaching multilingual language use from the perspective of literacy practices enables us to look beyond language to social practices and to examine the relationship between the concepts of language and literacy, literacy practices and language learning. Two data sets are used to illustrate how language, literacy, and language learning are…
Bridging the Gaps: Literacy, Media Literacy Education, and Critical Digital Social Work
2021
Drawing from literacy studies and research in media literacy education, this article contends that a series of conceptual gaps need to be bridged in order to have a better understanding of how these traditions can contribute to redefining the field of digital social work. The field of digital social work should move towards a more critical-oriented dimension so that digital media and the internet should not simply be considered (as is often the case), as mere tools to improve the professionality of social workers, but rather as life environments and systems of representation shaping individuals’ identities and social relationships.
NARRATIVE PRACTICES AND EMERGENT LITERACY: A LABORATORY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT
2015
Teachers begin activities on the written language already in the years when the children attend the kindergarten, in advance of planned systematic intervention in the first year of primary school. Study of the construction of the written language has highlighted how children want to penetrate the secrets that lie behind the written words and master the operating techniques. The first linguistic, symbolic and pragmatic experiences of a child play a decisive role in the following learning of reading and writing skills, influencing significantly the first textual competences and the motivation to the written code, the rate at which children learn the code and use it in the proper way. Research…
Literacy Education: The First Step towards Literacy Competence
2014
Partiendo del concepto de literacidad en el siglo XXI y la importancia de desarrollar la capacidad del pensamiento crítico en los estudiantes tanto de primaria como de secundaria, este capítulo argumenta a favor de la competencia literaria como clave de la educación integral. The development of literacy at an early stage in the education of young learners turns crucial in order for them to manage, analyze, critique and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information. The degree to which students can make use of language to read and understand texts in all formats (books, on-line newspapers, pictures, videos, etc) is a key indicator of their ability to make and communicate meaning.
