Our studies in the field of printing nanobiology in aqueous solution are proposed to highlight the role of water in the processes of interaction between biomolecules in drug- screening devices fabricated by bioprinting technologies and to emphasize the influence of water evaporation on the diffusion of molecules in droplets of picoliter-scale.

Quantum size effects in solitary wires of bismuth

We have performed four-probe electrical transport measurements on solitary highly crystalline wires of semimetallic bismuth with aspect ratios up to 60 at room and at cryogenic temperatures. By proper choice of the substrate material and the film deposition parameters, lithographic wires with lateral dimensions of down to one single grain, $\sim 250$ nm, were fabricated. The electrical resistance of each wire was measured against its thickness through successive reactive ion etching of the self-same wire. Optical properties of ZnO deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on Si nanowires

International audience; In this work, we report proof-of-concept results on the synthesis of Si core/ ZnO shell nanowires (SiNWs/ZnO) by combining nanosphere lithography (NSL), metal assisted chemical etching (MACE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). The structural properties of the SiNWs/ZnO nanostructures prepared were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all samples have a hexagonal wurtzite structure. The grain sizes are found to be in the range of 7-14 nm. Application of Room Temperature Photoluminescence From ZnO Nanorods for Salmonella Detection

ZnO nanorods grown by gaseous-disperse synthesis are confirmed by XRD analysis to have the wurtzite crystal structure. The obtained crystallites, as found from SEM studies, are 57 +/- 9 nm in diameter and 470 +/- 30 nm long on the average. Two emission bands of photoluminescence from ZnO nanorods observed at room temperature are centered at 376 and 520 nm. A biosensitive layer is prepared by immobilization of anti-Salmonella antibodies from liquid solutions on the ZnO surface. Immobilization of the biosensitive layer onto ZnO nanorods is found to increase the intensity of PL. Efficient excitation of photoluminescence in a two-dimensional waveguide consisting of a quantum dot-polymer sandwich-type structure

International audience; In this Letter, we study a new kind of organic polymer waveguide numerically and experimentally by combining an ultrathin (10–50 nm) layer of compactly packed CdSe/ZnS core/shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) sandwiched between two cladding poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layers. When a pumping laser beam is coupled into the waveguide edge, light is mostly confined around the QD layer, improving the efficiency of excitation. Optical Near-Field Properties of Lithographically Designed Metallic Nanoparticles

ABSTRACTWe report on the experimental observation of localized surface plasmons sustained by small metallic particles using a photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). The surface plasmons are excited in gold nanostructures tailored by electron beam lithography. The constant height operation of the PSTM allowed a direct comparison with theoretical computations of the distribution of the optical near-field intensity. Plasmon coupling above a chain of Au particles and electromagnetic energy transfer from a resonantly excited nanoparticle to a nanowire are demonstrated. Optics for future X-ray telescopes will be characterized by very large aperture and focal length, and will be made of lightweight materials like glass or silicon in order to keep the total mass within acceptable limits. Optical modules based on thin slumped glass foils are being developed at various institutes, aiming at improving the angular resolution to a few arcsec HEW. PROMINENCE PLASMA DIAGNOSTICS THROUGH EXTREME-ULTRAVIOLET ABSORPTION

In this paper we introduce a new diagnostic technique that uses prominence EUV and UV absorption to determine the prominence plasma electron temperature and column emission measure, as well as He/H relative abundance; if a realistic assumption on the geometry of the absorbing plasma can be made, this technique can also yield the absorbing plasma electron density. This technique capitalizes on the absorption properties of Hydrogen and Helium at different wavelength ranges and temperature regimes. EUV FLICKERING OF SOLAR CORONAL LOOPS: A NEW DIAGNOSTIC OF CORONAL HEATING

A previous work of ours found the best agreement between EUV light curves observed in an active region core (with evidence of super-hot plasma) and those predicted from a model with a random combination of many pulse-heated strands with a power-law energy distribution. We extend that work by including spatially resolved strand modeling and by studying the evolution of emission along the loops in the EUV 94 angstrom and 335 angstrom channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
